Elite sports people speaking up!

There seems to be an increasing number of sports people speaking up about the problem of males completing in women's sports which is positive. Thought it might be useful to have a thread of those who are risking sticking their heads above the parapet. Obviously the likes of Sharon Davies, Mara Yamauchi and Martina Navratilova have been bravely doing this for sometime but now we appear to have a few current athletes as well who are prepared to risk the mob to ensure women have fair competition. Is it too much to hope for that there will be a snowball effect?

I've name changed but I am a regular I promise.

My brother coaches a female team in a sport at university level. He's an ex elite athlete himself but is well into his late 40s now so too old (and too injured) to play at anything but club level now.

He has found out that there are plans to play against men in a supposedly open tournament and he has stood up for womens rights.

The others involved in the team threw the "be kind transwomen" into the mix and he has bombarded them with facts and figures and given them to the end of this month to go back to single sex squads or he will resign his position. He's also going to advise the international authority.

It looks like he's going to have to go.

I couldn't be prouder of him. He gets it.

Good for your brother. But what a shit position to be in. What do the female players think?

Meanwhile this is what actual female athletes experience from British Athletics:

That is just awful. Incredible strength of character to still go on and achieve as she did. Why do women have to put up with so much just to do the sport or career they love? We need more female coaches, more women in sport.

The ECB could do with following this. Instead players can play according to gender, never mind that it's actually dangerous.

Not UK but how depressing…

USA Powerlifting lost a two-year court battle this week after a judge ruled that it had discriminated against transgender athlete JayCee Cooper by banning her from competing in women's competitions.

I hope they take it all the way to the Supreme Court

Winterborne74 · 04/03/2023 08:52

What a travesty. It’s bad enough that there are male athletes who are so entitled and disrespectful towards women that they try to compete in the women’s category. It’s a whole new level of betrayal when they are backed by the courts.

Hannah Arensman, cyclist, ended her career due to having to compete against males and being pushed from 3rd to 4th place by a man.

Ah signal that is very sad to read. I know that that particular event seems to have attracted some males who are celebrating their wins over the female athletes.

It is very sad. Cycling does seem to be one of the worst affected sports doesn't it? Presumably that's because cycling is such a popular pastime and there are so many men who take it up as a serious hobby and they probably reach a reasonable standard of fitness and ability. Then it only takes one or two of them to "transition" and the elite women are screwed.

This is good yes, but the fact you need an entire paragraph to explain why people need to state their sex is just ridiculous.

Xiaoxiong · 16/03/2023 23:40

World Rowing tightens the rules that allow men to compete in the women’s competition. Men can still compete but need to reduce testosterone to 2.5nml for 2 years.

Oh, so their (generall) longer arms, broader shoulders, and longer legs and torsos don't help at all?

faffadoodledo · 17/03/2023 07:59

Meant to add - do they magically shrink those body parts when testosterone reduces to a certain level?

DarkDayforMN · 17/03/2023 08:30

Men can still compete but need to reduce testosterone to 2.5nml for 2 years.

Am I right in thinking this is basically impossible? Men have struggled with the 5nml limit imposed by other organisations and that’s why it used to be set at the ridiculous level of 10nml.

It’s all terribly, headdeskingly stupid and I wish organisations would just say “nope, no men in women’s sports, no matter their testosterone levels.” But perhaps they’re afraid of being sued, and this is a sneaky way of accomplishing the same thing.

(Does anyone know what the testosterone limit is in that Joanna Harper study that 3 of the 4 TW participants dropped out of, leaving it as a very expensive study of the honesty levels of its sole remaining participant? I have a notion it was 5nml.)
