I read somewhere that the community of heterosexual men who develop a penchant for cross dressing during adulthood were not so keen (in the 80s and 90s) to be associated with LGB people because of the stigma attached to being gay and the stigma of HIV etc. Once LGB people achieved a level of social acceptance this changed. The trans women who hung out with the LGB back then were more likely to be of the HSTS variety of trans. I don't know if this is true or not but it would make sense.
