Please can everyone complain to the advertising standards authority

www.asa.org.uk/make-a-complaint.html

MichelleScarn · 26/01/2023 07:13

Am glad to see the majority of responses are not approving!

PermanentTemporary · 26/01/2023 07:14

Complain about what? 'I saw a scar in a picture'?

Burberry will be delighted if you/we complain, they clearly think they are being edgy. And I wouldn't use Libs of TikTok to wipe my nose on.

I don't mind girls caught up in this seeing that scarring is real and quite extensive, and also that life goes on post surgery.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/01/2023 07:18

I don’t think adverts should be normalising in fact glamourising girls having healthy breast removed

MilkandKids · 26/01/2023 07:19

It’s possibly only in the US as was sent to me by a friend who lives there.

sevenbyseven · 26/01/2023 07:19

I can't actually see it on the Burberry twitter account though - has it been removed?

Moomoola · 26/01/2023 07:21

Agree with eyeball this is corroborating, glamourising and normalising the utter shite that is on you tube encouraging them to do this.
I say again! Please complain to advertising standards authority !
they can quietly give Burberry a rap on the knuckles rather than creating a debate publicly which only adds fuel.

My mistake, it was on Instagram. Doesn't seem to be on there either though.

MilkandKids · 26/01/2023 07:22

Not sure Newsweek piece about it here, looks like it was on insta

This is disgusting and sickening. I actually feel sick looking at this

Booblessbeauty · 26/01/2023 07:46

I'm actually crying

What nasty evil lies- how dare they

This is not real.

reality is days of screaming with pain, years of uncontrollable swelling, scars that look like you have been mauled by a lion, bleeding and chafing that never ends, pain and discomfort for life, restricted movement in both arms.....

I dont know anyone who looks like that, and I am in a community of literally hundreds of breast amputees

I need to do something about this sickening, disgusting lie, selling breast removal to young people as a life style choice when it is major surgery that will leave you in pain and disabled and disfigured for life

I dont know where to go, but I think advertising standards to start with maybe, if its being used in UK.

piedbeauty · 26/01/2023 07:59

It's on the Twitter Insta account. All comments are negative.

Just seems to have been shoehorned in alongside all their other ads - this one doesn't fit at all. Very weird.

MilkandKids · 26/01/2023 08:00

I’m so sorry @Booblessbeauty I can’t imagine having something so traumatic happening to you being glamourised like this. It makes me so angry.

The post is from three days ago. It's not the first pic - the first pic is a couple embracing. She has a pink bag.

It had glamourised it though. With supposedly so few people having this surgery, why does it need to be normalised by a glamorous high end fashion house? why an organisation that sells aspiration to young people?

Booblessbeauty · 26/01/2023 08:12

Here is my email to Burberry - I will update you if I get a response

I have had to have a double mastectomy because I have cancer, and this operation is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Its is excruciatingly painful and has left me appallingly disfigured, and will be in pain with restricted movement for the rest of my life.
I am sickened and horrified at your choice to show a model with a double mastectomy scar that is very much from the norm al experience. I appreciate models are not normal looking, but this particular portrayal is harmful far beyond even the standard complaints that models promote unhealthy body sizes etc.
I have no doubt that some people with double mastectomies, particularly those who are able to afford the time and money for repeated cosmetic operations to upgrade the scar, may look like this, ( temporarily)however I am in a community of hundreds of women who have had mastectomies, and most of us look like we have been chewed by a crocodile, and most of us have ongoing pain, disability and complications
I find it extremely irresponsible, actually downright dangerous for a fashion company to be portraying this major surgery as a lifestyle option.
Many young girls find living with breasts difficult and inconvenient for many reasons, shyness, for example, or because they impede progress in sport. You are effectively lying to them that this fantasy of neat, tidy, pain-free removal is a realistic option, and some are going to plan and scheme and say and do whatever they think necessary to get themselves onto this pathway, and the consequences for them are going to be horrific and life changing
I beg of you to remove these sickening ads before even one young person gets drawn into this horror.
Thank you

Boiledbeetle · 26/01/2023 08:19

Oh that's grim. That is not a nice thin not noticeable scar is it. I imagine parts of the healing process were not fun judging from that scar.

And why the fuck are they normalising this stuff?

Beowulfa · 26/01/2023 08:20

Fabulous message Booblessbeauty.

So sick of this minimising of the reality of female biology; "top surgery" is just like getting your eyebrows done in your lunch hour. Surrogacy is just some paperwork and a few months of minor inconvenience for some other person that you never have to speak to again. Egg freezing is like wanking into a cup. Female puberty is about boobs and bums.

You see "just a scar"

I see a woman who has such deep dysmorphia about her own body that she had extensive and unnecessary surgery to remove healthy body parts.

And I see a fashion brand glamourising this and making a strong political statement about which side of the trans debate they are on, instead of just doing what they do - fashion.

Why not just have a transman wearing their range of clothes?

MilkandKids · 26/01/2023 08:36

Exactly @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz is such a dangerous lie being sold.

Really powerful email @Booblessbeauty just articulates it all in a way that cannot be dismissed.

Please share Burberry’s email address if you find it so more of us can complain.

OP posts:
Helleofabore · 26/01/2023 08:38

Why not just have a transman wearing their range of clothes?

Because that would not be edgy enough?

Because that would not signal how inclusive they are?

Because two young female models without surgery posing like this together has been done?

Because Burberry now consider this aspirational for young women?

Because Burberry can use these young people and never have to be accountable for the realities of those young lives?

Because Burberry are a clothing and fragrance company, and the model that is showing scars has no need to be shown with their top half naked for any reason except to show the scars?

Because having a transman featured without making sure everyone knew it was a transman wouldn’t give enough attention?

Because having a fully clothed transman without signalling it was a transman isn’t exciting enough?

It is a good question.

Brokendaughter · 26/01/2023 08:43

Burberry, the brand who promote self harm.

How any reputable medical professional could do this to someone for cosmetic reasons & stay out of prison is beyond me.

I'm sorry @Booblessbeauty that this has hurt you.
It hurts me too & every woman who has to see it.

senua · 26/01/2023 08:53

I must be out of touch. I don't see that as 'glamorising', they both look cheap and skinhead-like to me. Not my cup of tea.

But I agree, Buberry shouldn't be normalising unnecessary cosmetic work.
