Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Gender critical views becoming more common

Went bell ringing last night and we were talking about the history of women ringing. Lots of pictures up of peels (a peel means ringing 5040 changes on the bells and takes about three hours) rung over the last 100 years and we noticed that one criterion for doing this was having a moustache! Quite out of the blue the comment was made that women were being made to disappear and we were not even allowed to use the word 'woman' anymore (there are some trans ringers, but none present btw). I was quite surprised and pleased. Had thought gender critical views were niche because most people are simply not aware of what's going on (and DH thinks we should ignore it all and it will go away).

Yes people are much more open to saying how they feel without fear of come back (cancelled, called a bigot for saying sex is real etc).
And thank goodness for that

gamerchick · 25/01/2023 18:06

I just think people are braver talking about it now because of the pushback. Thank god.

Out of interest did you back her up or remain silent?

OOlivePenderghast · 25/01/2023 19:31

I was in a bookshop in Scotland the other day (I’m English and was on holiday) and three women in their late 50s were talking about the gender recognition bill and other gender critical things. I wanted to say I agreed with them but was too scared unfortunately.

Back who up?

Yes, I backed her up. I agreed with her.

A friend has just pulled the "poor most vulnerable dears" on me and said she's not too worried as her child is a boy. No changing room worries for her 🙄.
We've still got some way to go I think.

southbiscay · 25/01/2023 22:27

We do still have some way to go but having been in these wars for 10 years, I have certainly seen a marked increase in people being braver of late. And the more that are, the more that will be. They can't sack/cancel/charge us all.

The other thing I have noticed is that the Overton window of gender criticality is sliding in a good way. At one point it was all about 'genuine' trans vs nasty TRAs. Now the arguments are commonly made that no man gets a pass to access women's spaces no matter how nice he is or what bits he has had chopped off.

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/01/2023 22:34

It’s common sense. Biological realism, as someone put it recently.

When polls claim the majority of people don’t care about the issue it’s because a lot of people have no idea what’s been going on and literally couldn’t believe some people think sex isn’t binary and a simple case of fact.

I’m glad you got to talk about it. The more mainstream coverage of the insanity and the more sunlight shone on it the easier it gets.

The events of today, which are horrifying, are making it harder for the other side to defend the madness.

BlueBooh · 25/01/2023 22:38

Yes, I backed her up. I agreed with her.

Well done, did anyone else say anything? I think more people are becoming aware of this situation and the more people that speak out the less "afraid" we get.

@Grammarnut there is so much of this stuff hiding in history. Completely pointless rules that do not in any way impact the job being done, but written by men, for men.

They should have just said having a penis, or at least be honest and say men only.

I wonder if whoever wrote that rule liked the photos to look uniform? All neat and tidy and matching?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/01/2023 08:54

The vast vast majority of people in this are quite clearly that there are only 2 sexes & men don’t become women by putting on a dress

however thanks to a relentless campaign of beeeee kiiiind/no debate/ stonewall training misrepresenting the law (what did they say? The estimated they had half of all employers in the UK) the vast majority of people in this county also have no idea how utterly mad and bad it’s got

thanks to several high profile cases it’s now becoming more obvious to more members of the public what’s going on

GC is simply biological reality
