Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

the misogyny of trans activism - Brendan O Neill

On blistering form.

'while it might be the outliers of the trans cult who scream witch and issue death threats and say ‘suck my girldick’, their tirades only express with greater ferocity and spite the misogyny that is inherent to modern trans activism. The root idea of the contemporary trans movement – that ‘transwomen are women’ – is itself misogynistic. Its reduction of womanhood from a biological, social, relational phenomenon to a costume that anyone can pull on, even people with dicks, is profoundly sexist. It dehumanises women. It denies the specificity of their experiences. It turns womanhood into a feeling, something flimsy.'

Brilliant article. He really gets it.

"Sexist hate is a daily reality for women who question the idea that you can change sex. Witness those clips in which mobs of masked men yell ‘fucking scum’ and ‘fucking piece of shit’ at Kellie-Jay Keen and her gender-critical friends. See the rape and death threats visited upon JK Rowling every week. ‘You are next’, a lowlife said to her when she expressed sorrow over the stabbing of Salman Rushdie. Or just behold the low-level intimidation that attends virtually every gathering of ‘TERFs’. There will always be gangs of men outside gender-critical meetings; men horrified by the idea of women speaking among themselves about their rights; men who ridiculously believe that their feeling of ‘womanhood’ and badly applied lippy makes them women, too. Better women, in fact."

Yep.

I'm glad someone posted this (thank you @ArabellaScott ), there's also a good article about the BBC, which will probably be linked on this article's page.

ArabellaScott · 24/01/2023 10:16

I am just making a thread on the BBC one by Malcolm Clark.

That's very well explained.

WARNING
(sounding my extremely unfeminist Klaxon!)

I’m developing a bit of a crush on Brendan O’Neill.

His articles on Eddie Izzard, Sam Smith, Jack Monroe and the Canadian teacher-bloke with the ginormous falsies hit the perfect balance between angry and hilarious.

Gender ideology is so po-faced, humour is such a powerful tool for dismantling it.

(Humour is why I love this place too! Such a funny bunch of fiercely clever wimms!)

IcakedefargeIam · 24/01/2023 10:25

@TheClogLady He's got nice shoulders, I've not heard him speak. So, in my head, he sounds like Joe Pasquale. It keeps me focused.

Anyway, feminism!

For all I know he’s just a head and shoulders in a jar!

I do know what he sounds like via his podcast, sharing this episode (with the formidable Genevieve Gluck) because the above article namechecks the online pro women, pro safeguarding news site Genevieve cofounded with Anna Spatz, Reduxx:

I suspect the women at Reduxx have been a key part of Brendan’s summiting:

reduxx.info/about/

It’s been fascinating to watch Brendan go from (paraphrasing) ‘I’m a free speech absolutist and I don’t like the chilling effect of online-thought-police’ to ‘The terves are right, this is all bullshit and some of these activists/TRA ‘celebs’ are seriously unhinged’ over a 3-4 year period!

Lottapianos · 24/01/2023 10:50

I certainly don't agree with him about everything, but yes, he absolutely understands why this issue is so very important to women, and why it's so significant. He doesn't hold back, and does it with humour, and I really appreciate that

@IcakedefargeIam · Today 10:12

Shame that there isn't something similar ON the BBC.

IcakedefargeIam · 24/01/2023 11:01

Stop it @TheClogLady if I find out he's got a nice voice, a GSOH, shoulders and (God help me) twinkly eyes, there'd be no help for me.

I do enjoy reading his articles on this subject. It's not difficult to lampoon. In fact, completely the opposite. It is ridiculous. If only it wasn't also so serious. The comment quoted in the BBC article from Alice Roberts (?)! I hope we come out the end of this and, when we do, they will look back and cringe so hard. Fortunately, the cringing shouldn't be terminal.

I'm not so sure that my thoughts about Brendan's shoulders won't be.

So many powerful articles all over the press in the last weeks. And so many of the population finally waking up and seeing what's happening. This is especially good!
