Non binary is such a stupid term. Frequently you see it paired with a sex, so someone will say I'm male/ non-binary. What they mean is 'I'm male bt special' You certainly fucking are special if you believe in this shite mate.

@OneMorePlant oh god, where to start? Because absolute cretins jump on bandwagons and publish articles to reel in audiences so they expose them and bring them round to opinions they otherwise wouldn’t even dream of countenancing. It’s a really basic method of manipulation that’s been going on forever.

The motivations of the authors and the bias of the outlet (any author, any outlet) is absolutely critical to know if you’re looking at this kind of thing. To dismiss it is unbelievably naive.

Brendan O’Neil cares not a jot for women’s rights. I imagine his ideal world is women staying in the kitchen or the bedroom (I died a little inside when a few PPs started talking about gosh darn handsome he is, dear lord). But he knows he can’t say that outright, just like he can’t espouse all his views on gays or people who aren’t white outright (he’s let the mask slip a few times though) so he’s jumped on trans stuff.

It’s so, so depressing watching women fall for this shit. The company you keep is important, and my god the obsessives on here keep some bloody awful company.

Your argument stops and crumbles on the assumption that the outlets that agree with your position are not "jumping on bandwagons" and are not trying to manipulate their readers.

When we talk about motivations of authors we are talking about mind reading or making wild assumptions. Something I can not do.

Every side has a bias or motivation. Assuming people who you agree with have the right motivation is just as dumb as you think the "women falling for this shit" are.

Articles are not "the company we keep". We are disgussing ideas and words, something everyone has, not moral superiority.

@DFSsale except you aren’t thinking for yourself are you…this is always the problem with that argument. You can’t claim to be free thinking just because you follow sites you perceive to be against the grain. It’s rather the opposite of media literacy if you think that that qualifies an outlet as equally worthy of your attention as one whose writers don’t have a narcissistic, misanthropic agenda.

Read widely, certainly, but the authors and their motivations are very, very important. Spiked don’t give a shit about women’s issues, they only care about being contrarians and selling ad space.

What is contrary in the article? How is it contrary to present the argument in the article?

PermanentTemporary · 17/01/2023 18:27

There are a lot of people out there i don't want to agree with. I would like reactionary concepts like non-binary to fade away. I see what it's doing to my friend to be in a relationship with someone who has come out as nonbinary and I hate it. When the concept dies off, I can stop finding that there is a small area of life where I agree with people like BO'N. Unfortunately at the moment this profoundly dumb concept has somehow got traction outside icebreaker sessions at boring training days.

NecessaryScene · 17/01/2023 18:34

Brendan O’Neil cares not a jot for women’s rights. I imagine his ideal world is women staying in the kitchen or the bedroom [etc etc etc]

Did you just use your default caricature-of-US-Republican template by mistake?

(I guess these rarely bear any concrete relation to the actual person, so maybe it doesn't matter).

So what do you disagree with specifically about his analysis of nonbinary?

Stop thinking about all the conversations you've had with him when he's told you that he doesn't care about women's rights and he thinks women should stay in the kitchen and bedroom where they belong.

Why is he wrong about nonbinary?

viques · 17/01/2023 18:46

So when Emma Corrin accepts a role playing a female character she is sort of double acting, first of all getting into character as the character then getting into role as a non binary person playing a woman. Impressive.

Or does Emma only accept non binary character roles these days? Hungry times ahead if you do Emma……

It is a brilliant article, I am fed up being held a moral hostage to other peoples chosen and illogical quirks.

nepeta · 19/01/2023 18:10

The gender identity issue is an odd one as people disagreeing with the ideology sometimes come from two diametrically opposed political camps. One side wants to keep the female sex nicely subjugated and in its allotted role, the other side wants to liberate the female sex so needs to fight against that first mentioned side.

But both sides need clear names for the female sex to continue existing.

So I can read O'Neil, keeping in mind why he might be writing these articles and still get something useful from his writings.

There's a nonbinary in Dining Across the Divide in the Guardian. He...sorry.... they's training to be a midwife. You can tell they is nonbinary because earrings and, look, a pretty flower on his top. It's unclear if they is also gay because they refers to theyself as queer, which could mean anything.

The bloke they is dining with seems nice. He is gay, but wants nothing to do with the alphabet.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/01/2023 18:18

I died a little inside when a few PPs started talking about gosh darn handsome he is

It was just an observation in passing, I specifically said it wasn't relevant to anything Grin you should have seen all the COVID threads about guilty crushes on Matt Hancock etc, you'd really clutch your pearls then!

DarkDayforMN · 19/01/2023 18:21

He...sorry.... they's training to be a midwife

🙃 how nice.

IcakethereforeIam · 19/01/2023 18:26

I know, how the fuck is they going to record assign the baby's sex, or is it gender?

I really need to see a photo of Brendan O'Neil!

DarkDayforMN · 19/01/2023 18:37

I really need to see a photo of Brendan O'Neil!

I already googled and was disappointed tbh. But maybe the appeal is his intelligent expression? He’d make a good fictional wizard if he had more beard and hair.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/01/2023 18:46

Like I said, it's in the flesh, you had to be there!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/01/2023 18:46

I had seen photos before, I didn't know it was him at first.

IcakethereforeIam · 19/01/2023 18:48

OK I'm googling....

IcakethereforeIam · 19/01/2023 18:59

Right, and Brendan, if you ever read this, I'm sorry for objectifying you. The big girls made me do it. I've only looked at stills but, nice arms and shoulders. A bit of a fivehead but, on the whole, I think I can see why he could be found attractive.

Spiked don’t give a shit about women’s issues, they only care about being contrarians and selling ad space.

And tell us, I honestly want to know, which publication does care about women's issues, preferably because they care about women's issues rather than because they're being contrarian, but either will do? Because as far as I can see, if you only care about women's issues to be contrarian, at least you care about women's issues at all.

Any update on the reputable resources that are not ignoring women yet?
