Radio 4 - 'Fags Mags & Bags' taking the piss out of gender identity

A slightly surreal comedy series set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, now on it's 10th series. The shop-owner has a very woke teenaged son Sanjay, constantly threatening cancellation and talking in hashtags and capital letters (OMG, FFS etc).

This is the first of a new series and Sanjay seems to be on steroids, spouting on about cultural appropriation and racism (and getting it wrong every time).

The writers have really decided to go for it this series!

I am surprised there is not more comedy written about this - there is so much material to mine, but I suppose it is a matter of the costs, in relation to the general climate, being right to extract it.

@Melroses don't forget the difficulty of getting your comedy show past the wokey gatekeepers at the BBC et al....

I laughed like a drain at the radio when that was (re-)broadcast yesterday. It was their "cancellation" episode and was a delight to listen to. It is far from the first time they've explored these waters.

If you've not heard the show before, the style of it, and the continual stream of in-jokes, might take some getting used to.

I have wondered for a while now how this show has survived being cancelled quietly withdrawn by the BBC.

There's a lot of shady identity politics content in FM&B. But they play it very well - you never know what side of the fence they are coming down on.

Have you listened to the episode about the Women's fun run which Sanjay thinks is sexist and gender-exclusionary so he invades it dressed as a penis?

I would imagine the issue with cabin pressure is rehiring those four immensely talented people for a reboot. I don't think any of them is short of work!

I'll have a listen to this. I'd given up on radio 4 6.30 comedy as it had become so cringe so good to have something worth a listen

Me too! I think Benedict Cumberbatch has said he’d be up for it - but I imagine the scheduling would be challenging! I’m not sure John Finnemore would want to either - it ended so perfectly.
