Domestic abuse and sexual violence against transgender and non-binary people surges

Reports of domestic abuse and sexual violence against transgender and non-binary people has surged by 18 per cent, according to new data.

Figures, provided by Victim Support, show reports of domestic and sexual violence against trans and non-binary people jumped from 266 in 2020/21 to 315 in 2021/2022.

The data, which the national charity shared exclusively with The Independent, includes victims who seek help from Victim Support, as well as those who are referred to the organisation by the police.

The charity warned they are hearing reports of abusers using their victim’s transgender identity as an excuse to be violent and abusive to them.

I think it is right that we have up to date statistics on all forms of abuse. But the cynic in me wonders if this isn't just a PR move by Victims Support who are concerned about the damage to their reputation once Sarah's case goes to court. :(

I wish I could remember the name of the person from the DV organisation who spoke on Radio 4, I think WH, and said that two women on her caseload would not come into the services because of it being mixed sex, and that women's lives would eventually be lost to this vanity project that will not permit an inclusive range of services that meet all needs instead of obey a political agenda.

There is no way of knowing how many of those 2-3 women who die a week might have been unable to leave the situation they died in because services were made unaccessible to them to avoid offending male people and a political lobby.

I don't have time to look at stats but I'd imagine the number of trans and NB population has also increased in the timeframe? Maybe not by 18% but will be significant.

This. 262000 identified as transgender on the census. It used to be unheard of. Of course stats go up as a population increases

FusionChefGeoff · 09/01/2023 22:01

I'd be pretty confident it's all to do with the number of people in the population who ID as trans / NB increasing.

Ergo violence against them will increase as there's more of them

Trans activists cried wolf too often, I'm afraid.

If you're out proactively drumming up reports of 'hate incidents' and complaints on Twitter and claiming that stickers and 'misgendering' is abuse then you are going to undermine people's confidence in data and integrity.

Which is shit, because of course nobody should suffer any form of abuse.

Agree that Victim Support have no credibility after the way they've behaved over the past year or two.

What happened to the "we believe you" campaign?

What happened to the "we believe you" campaign?

It got eclipsed by the ‘TWAW’
and ‘Misgendering is literal violence’ campaigns, if I recall correctly, Marg?

You get your news from Yahoo?👀

You get your news from Yahoo?👀

What is the point of your question?

First off if you had gone to the link you will see it is reprinted from the Independent as they often reproduce behine the paywall articles so making them free.

Secondly if you had read the article you would see that the stats come from Victim Support.

Not forgetting that many of us use a range of news sources because it is clear all papers have their own form of censorship or slanting the news.

In fact I regularly go to yahoo because they are one of the many news outlets that are relentlessly trans, and it is worth keeping an eye on what they are saying.

Do you actually have any interest in the story or were you at a lose end and thought you would randomly drop into a thread and just say the first thing that came into your head.

Talk about a strawman

Strawman, Marge? What on earth are you on about?

i directly answered your question - we can’t just ‘believe’ people who say things that are demonstrably untrue (eg TWAW).

That would be extremely poor safeguarding practice, for starters.

Show me where anyone has said misgendering "is violence".

I think they are more vulnerable to abuse. I will give them that. But I don't think they are the most healthy sound of mind types of people. So I think they are more likely to draw in people that are equally unhealthy and not sound of mind. Not that that makes it okay or it is their fault. It's a really sad situation all around. I mean they probably grew up with really rough family lives and are trying to make sense of all the insanity that life has brought them. And being trans is their only way of making sense of it all. But you have a point. I've become very skeptical of statistics. I sadly wouldn't be shocked if it was intentionally exaggerated.
