They describe themselves as non-binary and genderqueer but also say that the phrase “from maleness to femaleness” in Genesis provoked an epiphany.

Call me a spoil sport but it really is beyond me why it's an 'epiphany' to decide to change your name to 'Bingo' and wear eye shadow, and why anything in this article warrants being in the news. Has no one found an image of Jesus in a burnt crumpet this week? Good luck to Vicar Bingo I truly hope the discovery of their non binary self makes them more happy than simply being loved by their family and being a good vicar to their congregation.

littlbrowndog · 02/01/2023 22:48

Shouldn5 he be out doing good works instead of whinging on about his binary or whatever

honest to god them men

I don't think they are assuming everyone else is binary. To borrow a phrase from earlier in the thread, it was something around to be be grey there has to be black and white. Well okay let's say someone works out somehow they are a particular shade of grey. Where in that working out have they assumed everyone else is either black or white? Surely it's more likely we are all shades of grey but those of us that are not non binary are comfortable enough being called black or white cos it's near enough, or we are comfortable about the bits that don't exactly align.

That analogy doesn't work though. To be non-binary there must first be a binary. Being grey isn't being non-black and non-white. Because grey isn't the opposite of black or white.

And the non-binary refers to people rejecting male and female stereotypes. So if you are a non-non-binary female (ie a binary female) the assumption is that you must conform to female stereotypes. Part of the reason why gender ideology is so regressive.

JellySaurus · 02/01/2023 22:51

Always strikes me as weird when strong believers, people sworn to the service of God, learned in Bible and sworn to teach it to their congregation, decided that they know better than the One they respect above all.

Genesis 1:27

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

Or maybe if you believe so deeply in one unprovable thing, with its dogma and catechism, it is easier to transfer or widen that belief to another.

Well I think the article is about the C of E having the first out non binary priest so obviously whoever wrote the article thought it was newsworthy enough to write it. Note they have been out for seven years, it's not new, and they are a priest not a vicar.

How do you know that other than the possibly half hour talking to the journalist, they aren't out doing all sorts of 'good works' within their community. Our local priest used to come to my assemblies when I spent a year in a CE infant school when I was 7, and was heavily involved in the community (in senior school one of my teachers happened to be his wife) I imagine they still do similar.

Jaxhog · 02/01/2023 22:56

It's funny that he/she says wives of trans people should accept his/her as the person he/she is - while they can't.

Can't help thinking he/she is just looking for publicity.

I don't know much about the bible, I know people use it to bolster up their negativity against gay people, gay marriage and all sorts of other things. I believe there's something about not eating shellfish?! I'd hoped time had moved on.

Doing what. You were 7. ? What was he doing just chit chatting to you in assembly?

awesome work

I wouldn't say being non binary is rejecting stereotypes, or that they assume binary people must conform to stereotypes

WerewolvesAtMidnight · 02/01/2023 23:04

@littlbrowndog um yes the priest used to speak at our infant school assemblies every now and again, I was the equivalent of Y2, what's the issue with that?

Wellies54 · 02/01/2023 23:04

@WerewolvesAtMidnight Title of the article: 'Church of England’s first non-binary vicar says God ‘guided’ their identity'

Fair enough - maybe some people are interested in their non-binary identity. I find it heart warming that having grown up in a household where they were taught being gay was sinful they changed their views and broadened their horizons, which I'm sure makes them a better vicar/priest. I just am a bit cynical that rather than this being about what they can do for others, talking about how the church can be more welcoming and open minded, campaigning for the church to accept same sex marriage, they have to turn it into something about themselves and trivial things like bright clothes and sparkly eye shadow!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 02/01/2023 23:04

UWhatNow · 02/01/2023 22:06

This utter ridiculousness actually made me think about whether to cancel my monthly tithe and leave the Church of England… I’m still deciding…

I left when the former archBishop of Canterbury and several other senior priest declared that ‘trans is a sacred journey’ ; so girls cutting off their breasts is a Sacred Journey, is it, Rowan (autocorrect keeps trying to change this to Rowenna, do they know something I don’t?)

But God is not mocked.

Fluffymule · 02/01/2023 23:07

Would the church have allowed 'non-binary' people to be priests when they barred women from ordination?

How would that have been decided then?

FemaleAndLearning · 02/01/2023 23:08

The definition of non binary has recently changed. It used to be the person didn't believe they were male or female. Now it's about feeling not male or female. Its the most idiotic thing and completely sexist. I find non binary females the most annoying it's like they are saying look at me I'm better than you, I'm not going to be a woman and all the shit that comes with it. They are cowards. This non binary vicar is a potential problem if he is going to be spouting gender identity ideology to the congregation especially if children are there. Surely being a man who likes to wear make up etc is far more radical and out there than labelling yourself a non binary oh and gender queer. I hope his wife and children are supported.

I've never met any phalli in the women's toilets, if there are any they would be inside a cubicle. I give you I would be surprised to meet one in a communal changing room but again I tend to prefer ones with cubicles.

Ooh I've come across more than one on display in the ladies before now. Granted I did work and drink in a city centre pub at the time. And they weren't in the cubicles one delightful male I caught with his penis out peeing in the handbasin of the women's. And no he wasn't drunk and confused he was stone cold sober and did it because he could. He may still have had it on show when I made him get out of the women's as i didn't give him chance to put it away.

piedbeauty · 02/01/2023 23:12

They don't sound ready to be a vicar. They are far too self-obsessed.

I don't care what sex my minister is; I only care that they can minister to me when needed, and that they can do their job.

So....what IS non binary then? What does it mean to declare yourself non binary?

As others have said, there surely must be a tangible difference between that and "non non-binary"? Or what is the point?

Why subscribe to a category if that category has no meaningful definition?

littlbrowndog · 02/01/2023 23:15

His community don’t need to hear about his non binary stuff. He might hate dogs. His community don’t need to hear that

he might love tigers above all othe carnivores but his community don’t need to hear that

his work should be focusing on the needs of all his community , all of them and he should be humble and focused on the work his community needs

he’s an attention seeker

WerewolvesAtMidnight · 02/01/2023 23:18

@Boiledbeetle oh I have been 'flashed' when I worked in a pub in my youth as temporary bar staff during college. They weren't non binary or trans as far as I were aware just pissed and thinking they were hilarious.

The 'non binary' females I know are mostly teenage girls who have changed absolutely nothing about themselves other than made up pronouns and a change to a non binary name. It seems to be a mix of girls who have suffered trauma and want to identify away from it somehow, girls looking for social cache who want to be unique and 'not like other girls' (particularly as being 'cishet' is social suicide in Schools) and girls who like the control of it - making their parents and family dance to their tune.

I agree that part struck me as well. Other articles suggest he does campaign or at least speak on behalf of the LGBT community so there is that.

What is the difference between a priest and a vicar?

Very little - a vicar is a type of priest (the article says priest; he may or may not be a vicar). It's virtually the same thing just some historical detail, I believe.
