Politicians who prioritise sex offenders over safety of women and children

Our Scottish Parliament yesterday showed us the contempt our politicians have for women in Scotland.

Reading through the list of politicians who voted against Russell Findlay’s amendment to make it harder for sex offenders for change their legal sex.

From Maggie Chapman of the Scottish Greens who doesn’t want any barriers in place to anyone getting a GRC to Alex Cole-Hamilton from the Lib Dems and so many SNP MSPs prioritising rapists and paedophiles over the safety of women and children in Scotland.

They bring shame on the whole Scottish Parliament.

Do you have a link to where we can read who voted for them?

And because we don't know if these GRCs will be accepted in other nations, there is the potential that they've turned the whole country into a sex offenders' paradise.

For shame.

Abccde · 21/12/2022 07:11

All a sex offender needs to do is try and limit his crimes.

1 rape every 3 months and then
Identity change and slate wiped clean.

I think the UK govt should stop sex markers being updated on passports / drivers licenses without a UK GRC.

This madness needs to be contained in Sotland.

(Applogies to all my fellow Scots. I know this is horrific.)

I agree, it’s not fair on the rest of the UK for the weakness of our politicians in Scotland to impact women and children in the rest of the country.

Am so angry that so many of us have relived our traumatic experiences and even if any politicians have listened, they simply do not care about any additional harms caused to women.

I reluctantly agree @Abccde. And I feel so sad for my Scottish sisters. If the UK government starts to contain it, that may in the end help reverse it in Scotland.

Ultimately no one across the entire UK actually voted for a party that said they would do this. So why shouldn't the UK government say no?

In conversations I've stopped doing this. I've started to be much more direct and clear, and use the word "sex" so everyone knows what we are talking about, as well as outline what the offence of rape is if it's relevant to "gender change" and the discussion.

Radio this moment. Blind MSP. No connection between piece of paper and sex offenders in prison.

BeethovenNinth · 21/12/2022 08:17

It’s so depressing

i wanted to protest today but can’t risk bringing my kids as I think it might turn nasty

as a mother of girls in Scotland, I am devastated

SnowAndIcicles · 21/12/2022 08:21

I also can't come to the protest today as I have children and don't feel safe taking them along.

I feel sick about my daughter's future in Scotland, we're seriously considering leaving now.

BeethovenNinth · 21/12/2022 08:39

What time is the protest please? I feel so helpless.

I know what you mean regarding childcare. I'm going today as it's one of the few days that I'm not working, can get childcare and can get there but that's unusual which is why I usually can't go to these things. That's why it's galling when TRA's sneer at the numbers attending protests - the women who want to attend often can't because of their caring responsibilities.

And no, I don't feel comfortable taking weans along either - there's been too much violence aimed at women by TRA's at protests. A woman had 'witch' screamed in her face by an intimidating male at a previous protest outside the Scottish Parliament. I don't want my wee one to see that.

BeethovenNinth · 21/12/2022 09:03

Thank you. I am trying to work something out.

Igneococcus · 21/12/2022 09:06

I only just managed to read up on how it all played out yesterday, it's like some crazy panto, it's bizarre, besides being devastating and infuriating.

There is a parliamentary petition set up by Maya Forstater. I can’t link directly to the petition due to MN rules but I can link to the petition thread www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard/4668426-petition-update-the-equality-act-to-make-clear-the-characteristic-sex-is-biological-sex

Agree. They could have taken the time to build in protections for women. They could have taken the time to bring people along with them rather than increasing divisions between people with different protected characteristics.

I now assume anyone supporting this bill is a gaslighting liar who enables the abuse of women and children.

I don't live in Scotland but I have friends who do. I'm gobsmacked by this and by the sheer disregard held towards women and girls and moreover by the sheer stupidity of rejecting that amendment. It's as if nothing has ever been said about child sex abuse and violence against women and as if the same people voting for this have never mouthed platitudes about actually caring. I am utterly disgusted.

happydappy2 · 21/12/2022 10:36

I think its getting to the point where women should refuse to pay taxes-politicians are meant to work for us-not against us. The issuing of GRCs and creating 'males with a certificate, legally women', is dangerous for women and children.

Beamur · 21/12/2022 10:38

I think Scotland will rue this decision for years to come although it will be women who bear the brunt of it.
