I'm not properly awake yet but this has made me fucking angry. A world where women offering a safe place to women is deemed hateful. Surely the EA covers JKR on this?

JKR is an inspiration and such a treat to the egos of men that they must do whatever they can to try to destroy her. How pathetic.

The world has gone mad.

Just read the article. Wow! Absolutely no awareness of women at all.
Framed entirely in how it is seen in the context of trans rights.
Does it never ever occur that this is not about YOU!
Dripping with misogyny is right.

The whole article is like "Tell me that you don't think women are human, without saying you don't think women are human"

curiositydoll · 15/12/2022 09:17

I could chin that man.

TourmalineGiraffe · 15/12/2022 09:19

Jkr really winds 5hem up doesn't she?
Self made, with a voice and financially beyond their control.
Tried to boycott her books and sales went up!
Now trying to warn her with their last control tool, no girl wants her ever important reputation ruined do they, hmm?

It's an absolute disgrace that articles as poor as this get published. Journalism is a joke these days. No talent at all. No comprehension of any of the issues they write about. Just poison pens masquerading as journalists.

Wow, Ryan really hates women, and clearly also writers who earn more than him, and the fact that the most successful writer in the world is a woman is just too much for him.

Maybe Ryan should go have a lie down and reflect on whether he’s ever done anything significant apart from spread hate.

guinnessguzzler · 15/12/2022 09:41

In terms of legal challenge, I think JKR et al have been very wise by not making Beira's Place a charity, which at least means they avoid the potential of people wasting their time and money challenging their charitable status or complaining to the regulator. As they are entirely self funded they have lots of freedom and as long as they aren't discriminatory (which I think it is clear they aren't) then they really should be fine. They have a tremendously strong set up and can't be bossed about by funders. What a fantastic place to be in.

As someone with a background in journalism these poor standards have me tearing my hair out. There must be so many focussed, talented, intelligent young people out there trying to get a foot in the industry and this unthinking dross gets through the net?

Am still greatly amused by the audacity of this absolute grifter who wants others to donate so they can "do journalism school" ("and stuff" "from bed")

Aside from the fact no one in the UK calls it "journalism school", there's not a single word in that moronic begging letter that gives any indication they are motivated by anything genuine or serious at all.

I wish I could see the comments (don't have a subscription, and most certainly don't intend to pay the paper that publishes this kind of trash).

Hard to believe something so juvenile gets published in the national press.

On the plus side, the author seems to be struggling to find work, see pic. Not surprising really 🤨

That’s an interesting new ploy for a would-be journalist, using publication on a newspaper site to beg for money. Mind, you could hardly call the Independent a newspaper any more.

Ah no, that's on his Twitter account (I Googled him).

This is what his profile says on The Independent.

The pinnacle of his academic achievement so far seems to be a critical essay on Twin Peaks: The Return

I’m guessing that after that shameful “Independent” article, others have, too.

Ryan might have done us all a favour by making the whole thing so blatantly moronic.

RoyalCorgi · 15/12/2022 11:29

It's quite startling to discover that anyone could think that a woman using her money to fund a rape crisis service for women is a bad person who is destroying her own reputation. I ought to be used to it by now, because there's been such a lot of these quite unbelievable moments where you can't quite comprehend someone hates women so much - and yet they still take me by surprise.

There are three remarkable things about this article in particular:

  1. That anyone could even think this.
  2. That they would put it in writing for others to see.
  3. That a national newspaper would actually publish it.

Point 3 is most gobsmacking, obviously. I don't think any other publication would have touched it, apart from Pink News and some of the other loony left sites. Even the Guardian, I think, has some vague, ill-formed sense that an openly misogynistic rant against a feminist philanthropist supporting traumatised women might not be quite the right look for a supposedly liberal paper.

If it's any consolation, the Independent comment pages don't pay much, so it's no surprise he's hunting around for work.

OK Alcemeg, that restores the Independent to its high-status place at, er, the bottom of the newspaper heap 😁

IwantToRetire · 15/12/2022 15:56

This has been discussed on other threads with some suggesting it is so bad it needs to be shared as it might peak a few people.

But the independent and yahoo news have for sometime been printing these whiny self indulgent rubbish. Not sure if it is because they are on the trans train or think it will get them younger readers.

But what is really bad with the Independent is the deleting of comments. It seems that orginally there were 200+ comments all saying what a load of tosh, and they all got deleted. But then everyone came back and commented the same again!

This link should take you to the comment area www.independent.co.uk/voices/jk-rowling-trans-sexual-abuse-victims-women-b2244829.html#comments-area

You do have to create an account with the website, but it is free.

So if you want to comment on the frequent lunitic articles the Independent often publishes might be worth doing. Or on their facebook page.

Is basically every man an incel?

IwantToRetire · 15/12/2022 16:00

Interesting that his Independent pic is what looks like a well fed middle aged man but on twitter he is trying to look like a beguiling waif.

Is being a "working class" writer a thing, or just a statement of identity?

Failingateverything · 15/12/2022 16:05

He’s just spectacularly lacking in empathy for women. Clearly he can’t fathom that a women who’s just been subjected to physical or sexual violence from a man or men might be afraid of other male people.

Reading that article made my brain hurt, and not just because it is absolutely dripping with misogyny.

The Independent used to be a respected broadsheet newspaper. Now its basically just Buzzfeed.

Comparing Beiras Place with a whites only orphanage as well was a particularly low moment in the article and also calling a service exclusively for females 'a monument to hate'.

I really do realise now that most women have no idea how much we are despised by men.

The identification of trans with race is frequent. That there is no relationship between something which is in your head and something which is a biological fact strikes me as both misogynistic and racist. The Independant should be called out on this hymn to misogyny it calls an article. Disgusting.

nepeta · 16/12/2022 18:51

I read the comments more than 24 hours ago. At that point they were mostly on our side, though there were comments on the other side, too.

I went back right now, and some of those original comments seem to have disappeared (though I may just misremember), but the more recent ones are also more than half on our side, or at least pointing out that there are no real negatives from the Beira initiative as it gives more space in other services for transgender people etc., and that trauma survivors may need single-sex facilities, and that not every service needs to be for every group at the same time, as long as all groups are catered.

The article is poor in analysis and in content, however. Seems misogynistic to me in that it doesn't even address the arguments that have been made for single-sex spaces in this context.
