It's quite startling to discover that anyone could think that a woman using her money to fund a rape crisis service for women is a bad person who is destroying her own reputation. I ought to be used to it by now, because there's been such a lot of these quite unbelievable moments where you can't quite comprehend someone hates women so much - and yet they still take me by surprise.
There are three remarkable things about this article in particular:
- That anyone could even think this.
- That they would put it in writing for others to see.
- That a national newspaper would actually publish it.
Point 3 is most gobsmacking, obviously. I don't think any other publication would have touched it, apart from Pink News and some of the other loony left sites. Even the Guardian, I think, has some vague, ill-formed sense that an openly misogynistic rant against a feminist philanthropist supporting traumatised women might not be quite the right look for a supposedly liberal paper.
If it's any consolation, the Independent comment pages don't pay much, so it's no surprise he's hunting around for work.
