Scotland: "Children could be elected to parliament and high office under ‘controversial’ SNP plan"

Why am I not surprised. Why the continued, concerted push to make children become adults before their time.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/14/children-could-elected-parliament-high-office-controversial/

"Children in Scotland could stand for parliament and take political office, under plans unveiled by Nicola Sturgeon's governmentt_ to widen democratic "participation".
The Scottish Government published proposals for the minimum age of candidates for Holyrood elections to be cut from 18 to 16, believed to be the lowest election age for a national legislature in the world.
...

A Scottish Government consultation admitted there were "potential welfare concerns" with lowering the age to 16, such as exposing children to "intimidation" and "hate speech", as well as abuse on the campaign traill_.
It raised the prospect of youngsters having to live alone in an Edinburgh hotel during the week, away from their families, if their home is beyond commuting distance to the Holyrood parliament.
With the parliament's working week extending from 2.30pm on Monday until 12.30pm on Friday, the consultation also warned that being elected as an MSP could damage a child's education, including their ability to sit exams."

Excellent idea. It would hide Scotland's current dire exam results. Let's send them up chimneys while we're at it.

Whatever happened to Scotland?

waterwitch · 14/12/2022 18:21

Nicola doesn’t care about child welfare? What a surprise!

RambamThankyouMam · 14/12/2022 18:22

What could possibly go wrong? Hmm

SirChenjins · 14/12/2022 18:24

Anything for the Indy vote. The SNP are officially bonkers and Scotland is sleepwalking into the asylum.

PacificallyRequested · 14/12/2022 18:25

That's crazy. There's already a youth parliament, they should stick to that if they're so interested in politics.

Whereareyourshoes · 14/12/2022 18:30

Reminds me of Derek Mackay.

Are there others in SNP who would like easier access to young people?

ResisterRex · 14/12/2022 18:35

It's mad. And in no way beneficial to children.

Almost like there's a pattern emerging...

Any other place in the world and I'd think this was a joke.

It's horrific.

Why can't kids just be left alone to be kids. They gave their whole life to be adults, and they can't ever go back.

Well, I suppose that'll be the next thing: identifying what age you feel. Then you'll get a second childhood. If you're male. Women, of course, will be expected to take on extra caring, or be called agephobic.

RealFeminist · 14/12/2022 18:52

KIDS HUV GOT GREAT IDEAS COME ON LET THEM HAVE A SHOT

Toseland · 14/12/2022 19:09

Ah right, if they lower the age on this then perhaps they'll be looking to lower the age for other things too?

SilverCatStripes · 14/12/2022 19:14

This exact scenario is the plot of aTwilight Zone episode.

What the hell is happening in Scotland and who is pulling the strings ?

nilsmousehammer · 14/12/2022 19:22

There is apparently not one adult in the leadership with actual life experience of reality, or a grip of any kind.

This is a recipe for safeguarding catastrophe. Fashionable though subjecting children to abuse via adult virtue signalling and vaguely good albeit fantastically ignorant intentions.

Fgs Westminster, come and save Scotland. Quick.

nilsmousehammer · 14/12/2022 19:22

Toseland · 14/12/2022 19:09

That's part of the game plan, yes.

ResisterRex · 14/12/2022 19:24

I can't see it archived anywhere yet but have looked. It does also contain proposals to make public office open to asylum seekers, for further information. But it's the child aspect I'm most concerned about.

Though I suppose this would technically include child asylum seekers, too. So all round there's an impact on child welfare.

Some of the other parts of the article:

"Asylum seekers could also be permitted to stand for the Scottish Parliament under the plans, which aim to deliver a pledge in the SNP-Green coalition deal to "promote active participation in elections by under-represented groups".
...
A series of concerns were also raised about allowing asylum seekers to stand as an MSP or councillor, a move enthusiastically backed by Ms Sturgeon's Green coalition partners.
The consultation warned they would be forced to resign their post if their leave to remain in the UK expired, resulting in a costly by-election.
...
It [the consultation document] said that electoral registration officers have expressed concern that "they would have difficulty in ensuring that entries for asylum seekers were accurate and up to date, in particular where an asylum claim has been unsuccessful"."

Scotland is a shitshow these days. Education fecked and now the SNP want to put poorly educated, yet indoctrinated youth in place as stooges in their government, there purely to follow the party line. Disgusts me.

BettyFilous · 14/12/2022 19:28

From a safeguarding POV, underage parliamentarians could be exposed to all sorts of harrowing constituency cases and evidence for law making.

ArabellaScott · 14/12/2022 19:28

Doorstepping earlier, in Linlithgow.

nilsmousehammer · 14/12/2022 19:28

I was reading a recent book on the holocaust earlier which mentioned how the troops chosen to carry out the worst murders in the Soviet lands were intentionally aged between 16-24. They were the easiest to politically manipulate, particularly fresh out of an education system that encouraged conformity and political messaging.

Gosh plus ca change.

I'm in Scotland. The voting age lowered to 16 was bad enough. I thought I knew everything and was so much smarter than the adults in my life at 16. I wasn’t. No life experience.

Boiledbeetle · 14/12/2022 19:35

So whilst it's seemed lately in the Scottish parliament like the children are in charge it turns out they actually want the children in charge!

What could possibly go wrong?

And if at 16 you are mature enough that you can change your name, change your sex and be a member of parliament surely that would indicate that 16 year olds today are not like 16 year olds of yesteryear so whilst we are at it why don't we lower the age of consent to 13?

It will be the next logical step in the minds of some!

Whereareyourshoes · 14/12/2022 19:35

Is this an idea originating from the Scottish Greens?

Fenlandia · 14/12/2022 19:50

It's mad. Can you imagine having eg a sensitive, complex housing or domestic violence issue and taking it to a 16 year old who's barely old enough to have a Saturday job?

They're not even old enough to watch all the films at the cinema!

And they're responsible for managing their own constituency staff too, so that'll be fun.

But primarily, this really shows the contempt SNP and the Greens have for education, doesn't it? There's no way a young person can do this as a full time job and sit their highers. Just because it's a cushty, highly paid and important job - it's still a job.
