Why am I not surprised. Why the continued, concerted push to make children become adults before their time.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/14/children-could-elected-parliament-high-office-controversial/

"Children in Scotland could stand for parliament and take political office, under plans unveiled by Nicola Sturgeon's governmentt_ to widen democratic "participation".
The Scottish Government published proposals for the minimum age of candidates for Holyrood elections to be cut from 18 to 16, believed to be the lowest election age for a national legislature in the world.
...

A Scottish Government consultation admitted there were "potential welfare concerns" with lowering the age to 16, such as exposing children to "intimidation" and "hate speech", as well as abuse on the campaign traill_.
It raised the prospect of youngsters having to live alone in an Edinburgh hotel during the week, away from their families, if their home is beyond commuting distance to the Holyrood parliament.
With the parliament's working week extending from 2.30pm on Monday until 12.30pm on Friday, the consultation also warned that being elected as an MSP could damage a child's education, including their ability to sit exams."

I guess they're running out of candidates who can pass background checks so need new people to stick the Yellow rosettes onto come election time for the SNP faithful to vote for.

Utterly bonkers.

Excellent idea. It would hide Scotland's current dire exam results. Let's send them up chimneys while we're at it.

Whatever happened to Scotland?

Sturgeon

Frankly, I dodon'think 18yos have enough life experience to represent the local population (I honestly thought it was 21 until the SNP had an 18yo MP!) 16yos should be at school studying for their exams, hanging out with their mates, sneaking beer at parties etc.. growing up basically!

VaddaABeetch · 11/01/2023 16:04

I’ve made the point before but picture calling a plumber for an emergency & a 16 year old turns up.

I think this is part of a general pattern of abdication of responsibility by the Scottish Government when it comes to children. They are the equivalent of the permissive parent who can't say no because they don't want the child not to like them/ not to think they're cool/ progressive. So much easier to hand over responsibility to children and then say "but you wanted this! We gave you agency!"

The adulation of 'child saviour' Greta Thunberg is part of this IMO. Adults not able to be the adults and passing the buck instead.

Remember when Labour allowed a teenage person to be elected as women's officer, that didn't go so well for the teenager did it? Or for women.

When society looks to children to lead that society is doomed.

What ever happened to the concept of elders??

Ive seen it happen around where I live... We live rurally and there are lots of alternative /eco communities and people starting new projects, new ways if living. Ive heard of 'child led learning' but more recently heard of a group of people starting a community that is to be 'child-led'. Just made me think that these people have absolutely no fucking clue if they are looking at their children to lead the way.

Same goes for SNP.

Again, like the GRR situation -they are either incompetent at their job at being policy makers, or something more sinister is going on.

The same with this. Either they want easily influenced children without parental support around....

Or they have NO fucking clue on how to lead.

This is what happens when a lib left government are left to go their full length and disappear up their own little liberal bottoms.

Sadly it leaves those of us in England with the option of more Tory disaster, or to try out some of the lib/left insanity for a change. It's kind of like being asked to decide if you'd rather be hanged or shot.

EvelynBeatrice · 12/01/2023 13:34

I don't see the concern. The Scottish education system is a superb performer on all international standards so our young people will be well equipped to face the challenges in the same way as our current parliamentarians. There won't be any safeguarding or other concerns about under 18s or over 18 young people spending time in unsupervised close proximity to our Scottish parliamentarians - an august body, none of whom have ever been guilty of any moral or financial impropriety, sexual harassment or lack of judgement such as might worry the anxious parent. And the Scottish state is such a wonderful parent anyway - look how keen it is to intervene in the parental relationship ( named person etc) and look how well children in care in Scotland do academically and socially after ' care' organised by the state.

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 14:31

JFC Evelyn, I thought you were serious there for a moment.

And today's award for straight faced posting goes to Evelyn Grin

Slothtoes · 12/01/2023 15:24

This is creepy as shit and properly fucking mad. Dont even know where to start with this one. Why not 14? or 12? Why have any parental involvement at all with anything, if adults and children are the same? Call them all ‘people’ and be done with it. Obviously power dynamics and sexual and professional exploitation would only happen to stupid people.

Can people really not hear the screamingly loud safeguarding alarms that should be sounding within the SNP right now?!

Toseland · 14/12/2022 19:09

Ah right, if they lower the age on this then perhaps they'll be looking to lower the age for other things too?

What are you implying here?
Are you getting at that because age for elections could be reduced, that must mean they want to lower the age of consent eventually too?!
How does that logic even work if so and how on earth are they related?!

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 13/01/2023 11:18

Just with the poster cryptically quoting you and being like "that's the end game, yes*
End game of what? By who? Why.not just come out and say what you mean instead of talking in conspiracy riddles

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 13/01/2023 11:21

End game = game plan
