Scotland: "Children could be elected to parliament and high office under ‘controversial’ SNP plan"

Why am I not surprised. Why the continued, concerted push to make children become adults before their time.

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/12/14/children-could-elected-parliament-high-office-controversial/

"Children in Scotland could stand for parliament and take political office, under plans unveiled by Nicola Sturgeon's governmentt_ to widen democratic "participation".
The Scottish Government published proposals for the minimum age of candidates for Holyrood elections to be cut from 18 to 16, believed to be the lowest election age for a national legislature in the world.
...

A Scottish Government consultation admitted there were "potential welfare concerns" with lowering the age to 16, such as exposing children to "intimidation" and "hate speech", as well as abuse on the campaign traill_.
It raised the prospect of youngsters having to live alone in an Edinburgh hotel during the week, away from their families, if their home is beyond commuting distance to the Holyrood parliament.
With the parliament's working week extending from 2.30pm on Monday until 12.30pm on Friday, the consultation also warned that being elected as an MSP could damage a child's education, including their ability to sit exams."

KIDS HUV GOT GREAT IDEAS COME ON LET THEM HAVE A SHOT

I agree. Scotland's in dire straits after 15 years of SNP rule. The kids couldn't do any worse than our Nicola.

Jobsagoodun1 · 14/12/2022 21:08

Shit. Don’t tell the Welsh Government. They will be all over this.

JacquelinePot · 14/12/2022 21:09

Scotland trying hard to be the biggest international laughing stock on the planet.

Don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of nice friendly men willing to look after them.

Insane.

WomaninBoots · 14/12/2022 23:08

Seriously? What the fuck?

I think these people must have had a very different experience of being 16 than I did. Are they so up their out bottoms that they can't even look back critically on themselves and realise that at 16 they, also, like everyone else, were bloody ridiculous.

WomaninBoots · 14/12/2022 23:08

Out bottoms?

OWN bottoms!!

Anything for the Indy vote. The SNP are officially bonkers and Scotland is sleepwalking into the asylum.

This is it in a nutshell. And I’m Scottish. Ashamed I ever gave this lot my vote. But it’s ALL Westminster/ the Union/England’s fault you know……

Shimmyoo · 15/12/2022 00:55

Children are supposedly protected from the burdens of adulthood by supportive adults so that childhood is a genuine time to grow and learn and have room to mature into adulthood. The result hopefully being a society of well adjusted, educated and happily functioning adults.

This purposeful move by our society came about in direct response to the obvious societal damage seen in our past when children were not given time for education or supportive growing.

The SNP has spent an inordinate amount of time and money trying unsuccessfully to force themselves between children and their families, why is that? Named Persons, LGBT Youth and now this?

Wasn't the voting age changed to try to increase votes for independence - and didn't that tactic backfire spectacularly?

It's not as if there have been any SNP members who have been publicly paraded for their tender age and then ended up bringing embarrassment to the party (and Scotland) for unseemly conduct now is it?

Coyoacan · 15/12/2022 01:41

I know too many adults do not acquire greater wisdom as they get older, but even a genius sixteen-year-old would not have the necessary experience.

As for asylum seekers, how would they be able to represent the people of a country they have only just arrived in?

dropthevipers · 15/12/2022 01:45

Whilst I have no idea what the hell they are drinking/smoking up there in Scotland this latest bonkers idea won't add up to much. Who on earth is going to vote for someone who is otherwise only qualified for a Saturday job at Mcdonald's?

AutumnCrow · 15/12/2022 01:55

Toseland · 14/12/2022 19:09

Ah right, if they lower the age on this then perhaps they'll be looking to lower the age for other things too?

Aye, and the youth will need rehearsing from around the age of 13 or 14 for these parliamentary roles?

Adult parliamentarians often have a four year lead up time or more.

Cheekymaw · 15/12/2022 02:03

@ArabellaScott😭😂😂😭😂

This exact scenario is the plot of aTwilight Zone episode.

What the hell is happening in Scotland and who is pulling the strings ?

The loonies are in charge of the asylum.

I can't move back anytime soon.

The kids would get a shit education & I have a female child so even more of a big no no.

Which actually is quite upsetting to rule out the thing I have wanted to do since the day I left.

Well quite. When I was 16 I could tell you anything you needed to know about what the best buys were in the new Avon catalogue (ah memories of trudging through snow , as you know too young to drive, delivering the Avon orders. God I hated that job) but if you'd asked me about Politics or the state of the world or what the issues were with the local swimming baths or wether the current legislation for x was sufficient I'd have looked at you blankly then carried on wittering about how cute the Empire Stores delivery guy was.

And if my experience of visiting my Scottish side of the family are anything to go by growing up, its the salt in the porridge that does it. To much salt, it addles your brain.

CeratopsofthePharoahs · 15/12/2022 08:01

My 12 year old would have a bash at it. He wants to ban Maths and French in schools and have more emphasis on Food Tech.

KittensNotMittens · 15/12/2022 08:03

Nicola hasn’t got kids. No one with a 15, 16 year old in the house would think this is a good idea.

school - naw it’s too cold kiddies and it’s just boring…
drink age lowered to 14 - aye!
tattoos for kids - oh yea!
ban - chores, withholding of pocket money for bad behaviour, visiting great aunt senga at Christmas.

JacquelinePot · 15/12/2022 08:11

How did I not think of this before?!

Blackadder

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/12/2022 08:16

This is one of the stupidest political policies I've ever heard of, and that's saying something. Who in their right mind would vote for a 16yo to be an MSP? Would their parents/guardians have to give permission for them to stand, given they're not yet legally adult (in the UK as a whole, anyway)? Is this because younger people are more pro-independence?

I am Scottish, although I live in England and have done since I was a child. Most of my family are in Scotland. I love my country but by jings she deserves better than these SNP and Green nutters running the place.

Quite.

At this point the SAS need to break in, locate Nicola's policy advisors, and prise the bottle out of their hands.

LatteToday · 15/12/2022 08:30

This is totally bonkers.

I work for an MP. The amount of abuse, threats, stress and nastiness directed at elected people is worsening all the time.
Why would you purposely expose a child to that?

And how on earth would a 16 yr old cope with the casework? They’d be hearing/reading about things that are inappropriate for children.

and living away from home during the week, whilst dealing with the abuse, the casework, the paperwork…

i can’t believe anyone thinks this is a good idea.

LatteToday · 15/12/2022 08:35

Quick Google tells me that the only country where someone younger than 18 can stand in elections like this is… North Korea. Where you have to be 17.

SingingSands · 15/12/2022 08:38

And whenever anyone asks me if I miss Scotland and want to move back, I cheerfully tell them "never". What is happening to Scotland?

SirChenjins · 15/12/2022 08:40

What’s happening is the SNP’s obsession with independence and harvesting the votes - there is really nothing more to it. They will literally do anything to get it through.
