Mind are captured

I suppose it shouldn't surprise anyone, knowing the state of the charity sector, that Mind has been ideologically captured, but it's still depressing. This is from a press release on conversion therapy:

"Trans people in the UK experience higher rates of mental health problems, self-harm and suicidal ideation. The government’s own research suggests that trans people are much more likely to have undergone, or been offered, conversion ‘therapy’ (13%) than cisgender people (7%)."

So, Mind would much prefer that any and all suggestions of a trans identity are immediately fully affirmed. There should be no gentle questioning and no consideration of the damage that might follow. No therapy to enable a person to properly work through and understand their feelings and what’s causing them.

Well that seems like a reasonable position for a mental health charity to take 🙄

Quite, waterwitch. The lack of critical thinking makes you despair.

Apart from which, they haven't thought about the possibility that perhaps the reason some young people are identifying as trans could be because they have mental health problems, not the other way around.

One only has to hear Ritchie’s story, or Sinead’s story, or any of the many many detransitioners, to understand the potential harm of affirmation only treatment.

watermelonseeds · 12/12/2022 22:33

Yep, this has been the case for some time. They've made tits of themselves on Twitter (I forget exactly how, only remember the absolute panning they received there). It's not just "aw, help the most vulnerable", they're full on TWAW and woo-woo.

Shelefttheweb · 12/12/2022 22:43

It is the same people who move from charity to charity corrupting each as they go.

Where I work there was a member of ‘diversity’ staff who pushed this hard. Fortunately I managed to undo some of the more egregious changes when she left, but there is now another organisation being made subject to her take on stonewall law.

Oh yes, I agree with this. It's not (I assume) the Chair of Trustees or similar at Mind who will have come up with this stuff. It will absolutely be enthusiastic members of staff who the leadership will be nodding along with in a blind panic. All charities seem to have gone very "social justice" in 2020, and I think Mind was up there in the vanguard.

JooezHautbois · 12/12/2022 23:12

Does this mean you are in favour of conversion therapy? Mind have a very reasonable policy on this, try reading the report linked to from the link above.

No it doesn't. Don't be disingenuous. Allowing people space to explore the issues around their feelings is not conversion 'therapy'.

Family member of mine volunteers at mind after having serious mental health challenges. Has now obligatory undercut, blue hair, and scripted speech about why I am a hateful problematic old fashioned conservative idiot who needs to educate myself.

I think she's being groomed.

Igmum · 13/12/2022 03:01

Your link doesn't work Jooez but if it's that dreadful study by the idiot at Coventry University I've read it. He chose to label neutral therapy by professionals with no end in view as conversion therapy. It isn't and frankly I'm appalled that anyone is against children receiving proper professional support before deciding on medical sterilisation.

Shinyredbicycle · 13/12/2022 03:50

Yep. I used to work at Mind and the info team are definitely cut from the non-binary, pronoun announcing, TWAW or it's literal violence cloth.

I thought it was interesting that gender ideology really took hold after Mind announced its intention to become an 'anti racist' organisation during BLM in 2020. I strongly suspect they looked round at the demographic of the org, who was in the senior positions and who had been overlooked for promotion time and again and thought 'crickey, this a bit tricky all this structural inequality stuff.. Sticking pronouns on our signatures much easier, and it's all about fighting oppression, isn't it?'

waterwitch · 13/12/2022 06:50

@JooezHautbois
It all depends on how you define conversion therapy. Mind have used a very broad definition, but the presented it as just the most extreme versions. Everyone is against torture. Obviously.

Short history for you:
The proposed law was pulled in the summer because the wording seemed to include talking therapies, and even questioning by concerned adults eg with teachers, doctors and parents. I would assume we can all agree that criminalising parents for having challenging discussions with their teenage children is wrong. Yet Mind advocate for a law, without review, which might do just that

Do you support that?
