JKR opens a new support and advocacy service for women in Edinburgh

Amazing.

Suzanne Moore reports on the opening of 'Beira's Place':

'Beira’s Place is not a shelter or a drop-in. Rather, women will come, their needs will be assessed and then the appropriate therapy and help will be found for them. For free.

Sex-based crime in Scotland has been rising since 1974. Jo Rowling talks of answering unmet needs “As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time.”

There are clearly so many unmet needs – waiting lists are huge for rape crisis centres all over the UK. Lack of funding is a key issue.

What Rowling has done here is astonishing. She has not only bought the building but is funding the entire service. This is not a charity. It does not depend on the whims of whoever is in power. While Rowling is covering the core costs, if people want to support it, they possibly could do so in future by donating towards extras such as service users’ travel or childcare expenses.'

....

'These women are fighting against male violence, and they really know what they are dealing with. Kerr and Domminney have between them more than three decades’ experience of running Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis. And Rowling has handpicked her dream team of board directors to support them: Rhona Hotchkiss, a former nurse, prison governor and advisor to the Scottish Government; Johann Lamont, Labour and Cooperative MSP, and a lifelong campaigner for the rights for women; Dr Margaret McCartney, a GP, academic and broadcaster; and Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, the largest grassroots women’s organisation in the country.'

What an amazing thing to have done.

I'm actually feeling quite emotional reading Suzanne's piece. What an incredible thing she's done. What a woman.

MichelleScarn · 12/12/2022 09:22

Amazing! Wonderful women all of them!

HermioneWeasley · 12/12/2022 09:24

What a fabulous woman

Chillyallday · 12/12/2022 09:28

This has made me so emotional. JKR is amazing

DialSquare · 12/12/2022 09:30

Every time I think I couldn't admire her more, she proves me wrong! Such an aspiring woman.

WarriorN · 12/12/2022 09:34

Wonderful!

WarriorN · 12/12/2022 09:35

An another example of how women have just got shit done for themselves.

If only trans stonewall etc would sort out third spaces for themselves rather than relying on the work of women....

ShirleyPhallus · 12/12/2022 09:35

Oh she’s so wonderful

Looking forward to seeing how the TRAs will spin this one against them as usual 🙄

ResisterRex · 12/12/2022 09:36

From the substack:

"I still get so many emails and letters from women who just want to ask questions: teaching assistants who see no big deal in little boys wearing dresses, endocrinologists no longer allowed to use the words ‘male’ and ‘female’. Women who feel bullied into silence for fear of losing their livelihoods by saying the ‘wrong thing’.

That’s what made Rowling speak up. Three years ago, she saw this happening and she realised: “It’s going to have to be, me, isn’t it? Because I will always be able to feed my kids, even if everyone boycotts my books for the rest of my life. That is a phenomenally privileged position to be in. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on Earth.”
She's such a decent person. Thank you JKR Flowers

heathspeedwell · 12/12/2022 09:36

Just when you thought you couldn't admire JKR any more, she goes and does this! Every day she makes the world a better place.

SierraSapphire · 12/12/2022 09:36

I'm wondering whether there might be a legal challenge at some point, which actually could be beneficial if it sets caselaw that cements that single sex services are allowed under the Equality Act. Possibly a reason why there won't be a legal challenge, as it could very easily be an own goal. Unlike charities JKR will be able to afford to fund any defence and not have to capitulate.

aweegc · 12/12/2022 09:36

OH MY GOODNESS!

She's incredible.

Naunet · 12/12/2022 09:38

She is absolutely amazing! Almost makes me want to cry.

TinFoilHatty · 12/12/2022 09:39

What a phenomenal woman. I heart you, JKR.

There no doubt will be.

No doubt also people with pastel flags outside shouting abuse at it and women going in, or trying to get in themselves. Obviously any women, pastel flag holder or not would be welcome. I'm not sure why they'd want to if they don't think they're women though, but that's another issue.

It makes me think though: with all the wealthy people involved in the the trans movement, it's rather striking that one of them hasn't set up a pioneering centre like this for trans people, isn't it?

WolverineBlueyy · 12/12/2022 09:40

How incredible. What a wonderful woman she is!

TrashyPanda · 12/12/2022 09:41

She is so inspiring, insightful and compassionate.

she is the living example of charity

could there be a better role model?

FemaleAndLearning · 12/12/2022 09:41

Thank you Joanne. You are a true inspiration. I wonder how the haters will react?

YouSetTheTone · 12/12/2022 09:41

What an incredible woman, I have a lump in my throat thinking of her generosity in ensuring women in Scotland have a safe space where they can receive the support to help them heal. The name and reasoning behind it is beautiful. Summer will come.

As an aside, I started reading Ink Black Heart over the weekend and am LOVING IT.

Fenlandia · 12/12/2022 09:42

Amazing news on a chilly Monday morning, well done JKR and the fabulous team (some of whom are well-known on these boards for their work). We have said for years that women would have to rebuild the women-only services we need from the ground up after so much has been lost to the rush to make everything mixed-sex.

felulageller · 12/12/2022 09:43

Wow thank you JK.

XanaduKira · 12/12/2022 09:45

Thank you JKR - you are truly phenomenal.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/12/2022 09:47

What a marvellous thing to do

the fact that it’s not a charity means it will miss out on some valuable oversight, but
that board of directors gives me faith that this will be kept on the straight and narrow

time and again JKR demonstrates her integrity and humanity
