Amazing.

Suzanne Moore reports on the opening of 'Beira's Place':

'Beira’s Place is not a shelter or a drop-in. Rather, women will come, their needs will be assessed and then the appropriate therapy and help will be found for them. For free.

Sex-based crime in Scotland has been rising since 1974. Jo Rowling talks of answering unmet needs “As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time.”

There are clearly so many unmet needs – waiting lists are huge for rape crisis centres all over the UK. Lack of funding is a key issue.

What Rowling has done here is astonishing. She has not only bought the building but is funding the entire service. This is not a charity. It does not depend on the whims of whoever is in power. While Rowling is covering the core costs, if people want to support it, they possibly could do so in future by donating towards extras such as service users’ travel or childcare expenses.'

....

'These women are fighting against male violence, and they really know what they are dealing with. Kerr and Domminney have between them more than three decades’ experience of running Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis. And Rowling has handpicked her dream team of board directors to support them: Rhona Hotchkiss, a former nurse, prison governor and advisor to the Scottish Government; Johann Lamont, Labour and Cooperative MSP, and a lifelong campaigner for the rights for women; Dr Margaret McCartney, a GP, academic and broadcaster; and Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, the largest grassroots women’s organisation in the country.'

JKR gives the women of Edinburgh a wonderful early Christmas present. Thank you, JK. 🌟

In a way it would be good if someone sued. As someone on the other thread said JKR could afford a lot of Ben Coopers time. It would be worth it to get it settled in court that it is not discrimination

nettie434 · 12/12/2022 11:28

Thanks RoyalCorgi and BoreofWhabylon. I've obviously underestimated Margaret McCartney.

I heard Suzanne Moore on Woman's Hour. Emma has done a great job by treating this as a news topic in which the BBC should be expected to reflect the range of opinions. I feel sad for Jenni Murray though. I'd love to hear the inside story from Jenni Murray on who made the decision not to let her talk about the topic.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/12/2022 11:29

This is amazing, what a wonderful thing for her to do.

Sadly, we all know that the TRAs will target it - both outside the building and also harass and threaten the staff. I hope I'm wrong.

Man on Twitter already threatening to sue ...

'Does it offer services to Trans women who have suffered male violence?
If so.. JK admits trans women are women.
If not.. she's discriminating and can be sued.'

Not quite the gotcha he thinks it is.

Indeed. Another man who doesn't understand the law. Luckily, there are plenty of lawyers who can set him right.

Itsoktogiveup · 12/12/2022 11:32

Wow I love her so much, she really defines leadership, doesn’t she?

And to make it all amazing all the money used for this comes from her raw talent that she used to make children happy. It’s all so untainted compared to most rich people.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/12/2022 11:35

Yes, I'm feeling that I've given a tiny part of the cost personally by buying all the Cormoran Strike books. Currently also donating a fraction of a penny, probably, by being a BBC licence payer, given that they must be paying well for the rights to make the Strike TV series.

Ohheckethump · 12/12/2022 11:42

It's seems IW is not a happy bunny!

Plus I assume jkr gets rights payments for the Strike series. I did like the nice coincidence for the trailer straight after WH.Grin
Also re EB - in the earlier segment on male harassment of women, loved her dry responses to some of the (male) listeners comments.

Happylittlechicken · 12/12/2022 11:46

So males with a trans identity can access every other rape crisis centre In Scotland, but IW is still pissed that there’s one just for women. Whoever said the TRA would try to frame this in a negative light was sadly right. Are women to be allowed nothing?

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 11:46

Ohheckethump · 12/12/2022 11:42

It's seems IW is not a happy bunny!

Because obvs the only reason anyone would care about the needs of female people is to meanly and deliberately piss off male people. 🙄

Yeah this kind of attitude is exactly why female only services are going to have to be re established, from the ground up, with a lot of loud, confident 'NO this cannot be all about you' statements to indignant male people.

Absolutely this!

Ohheckethump · 12/12/2022 11:49

Iw is craving JKRs attention right now 🤣

Typical male arrogance to believe that a woman would set up a womens service just to upset a bunch of males.

unwashedanddazed · 12/12/2022 11:54

Well ain't this a kick in the nuts for those who would have rape victims 'reframe their trauma'?

Bloody marvellous woman. And a bunch of other marvellous women running it too!

Slothtoes · 12/12/2022 11:55

Wow. I really didn’t think I could possibly think more highly of JK Rowling than I already do- and now she’s absolutely outdone herself with this. What a truly fantastic thing to do. I wish the new service every success.

TodayInahurry · 12/12/2022 11:57

Well done JKR and her team, fantastic news!

WarriorN · 12/12/2022 11:58

Whilst they've all been sending death threats she's be quietly busy doing this.

She's a queen.

And given to Suzanne and NOT a paper in order to stay out if any political leanings.

And straight to the nation on woman's hour as news.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yes, JKR does not care about the women, the only possible reason she could have to invest millions in this project is to piss off Transwomen.
These people really do think they are the centre of the universe don’t they

Mollyollydolly · 12/12/2022 11:59

I stayed up late last night watching all of 'Troubled Blood' on iplayer and was reflecting on what an amazing writer JK Rowling is. But she is so much more. What a fantastic thing to do with such an amazing team of women. 'Feminist to her fingertips' will be bloody fuming.

I hope Emma Watson takes note. This is what true feminism looks like.

👏

ScoldsBridal · 12/12/2022 12:05

You know what - why don't we try and forget about all the stuff TRAs may or may not say or think about this. Let's not waste our words or energy. Because I'm relishing the utter normality of being able to speak about a genuine womens' service. It's ridiculous it should feel so rare and precious but in this climate it is. And it feels good. Not that women needing provision for care after trauma is 'good' because no one wants anyone to end up in these places, but Christ they're needed. And this woman and her fantastically experienced and knowledgeable team have made it happen.

Today I am proud and a little more hopeful as a woman living in Scotland. It's been utterly depressing seeing the First Minister dismiss our voices and being hellbent on ignoring the risks the new GRR Bill will introduce.

And I feel so good that the nights I spent reading the whole Harry Potter series TWICE with both my children; all the wands and action figures I've purchased; the visits to Harry Potter world etc...have directly contributed to making it possible for JKR Rowling to make this happen. And this makes me smile.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 12:06

I see the 'it would be illegal for this place to exclude transwomen' brigade have turned up on Twitter. They think it's such a gotcha and that saying it demonstrates their superior legal knowledge.

I think Beiras Place is going to get a lot of shit - lots of 'how you prove this isn't a cis woman' type 'activism'.

But it all says a lot doesn't it- while TRAs have been busy sending death threats and complaining that the world doesn't revolve around them, JKR and these other amazing women have been quietly working their arses off to fulfil a the needs of women which are not being met.

ItsLateHumpty · 12/12/2022 12:07

She is phenomenal - a real warrior woman of our time.

Everything she does is with such class, no grandstanding, she just keeps putting her money where her mouth is.

I love her books, but I think fighting this war for women will be her legacy.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2022 12:10

Do these chumps really think JKR hasn't had top-notch legal advice on this?

RoyalCorgi · 12/12/2022 12:13

Ohheckethump · 12/12/2022 11:42

It's seems IW is not a happy bunny!

The other hot take I've seen is that JKR is trying to restore her tattered reputation.

It doesn't matter. Every time these fools write something like that, it peaks a few more people.
