JKR opens a new support and advocacy service for women in Edinburgh

Amazing.

Suzanne Moore reports on the opening of 'Beira's Place':

'Beira’s Place is not a shelter or a drop-in. Rather, women will come, their needs will be assessed and then the appropriate therapy and help will be found for them. For free.

Sex-based crime in Scotland has been rising since 1974. Jo Rowling talks of answering unmet needs “As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time.”

There are clearly so many unmet needs – waiting lists are huge for rape crisis centres all over the UK. Lack of funding is a key issue.

What Rowling has done here is astonishing. She has not only bought the building but is funding the entire service. This is not a charity. It does not depend on the whims of whoever is in power. While Rowling is covering the core costs, if people want to support it, they possibly could do so in future by donating towards extras such as service users’ travel or childcare expenses.'

....

'These women are fighting against male violence, and they really know what they are dealing with. Kerr and Domminney have between them more than three decades’ experience of running Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis. And Rowling has handpicked her dream team of board directors to support them: Rhona Hotchkiss, a former nurse, prison governor and advisor to the Scottish Government; Johann Lamont, Labour and Cooperative MSP, and a lifelong campaigner for the rights for women; Dr Margaret McCartney, a GP, academic and broadcaster; and Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, the largest grassroots women’s organisation in the country.'

JKR gives the women of Edinburgh a wonderful early Christmas present. Thank you, JK. 🌟

Are they on glue?

When teachers (eg in Ireland*) bang on about feminism being all about equality and intersectionality, this is what you get.

I'm not going to link the tweet as the tra is enjoying the attention but it's under a recent JK tweet.

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 10:10

What a fantastic thing to do!

The lifechanging impact for those women, particularly with that group of women in charge - wonderful, Jo I salute you. So badly needed.

HopRockers · 12/12/2022 10:13

Actual tears
Thank you Jo ❤️

I really want Sturgeon to be asked about this by someone who won't let her squirm away.

TheBiologyStupid · 12/12/2022 10:15

Just heard this announced on the BBC before the start of Woman's Hour - fantastic news. Jo Rowling is so wonderful.

LizzieSiddal · 12/12/2022 10:16

My word what an amazing thing to do.

She’s helping women which is awesome but the TRAs will now double down on her which makes me so sad for her and her family.

And when is she going to be given her Damehood for Services to Women?!

Whereareyourshoes · 12/12/2022 10:19

So much love for JKR and all those wonderful women working there. I hope they are left in peace to provide this sadly much needed service to give women space to recover. No re-education, simply care.

💚🤍💜

SapphosRock · 12/12/2022 10:19

What an amazing woman she is!

Can anyone guess what the Pink News headline will be? I am sure they will try and put a negative spin on it but I have no idea how.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/12/2022 10:20

This is amazing.

I wonder what lengths the TRAS will go to to ruin this project though. They can't claim that there are not already spaces in Edinburgh.

It is so brave of all of these women to stand up against the tide of misogyny running through Scotland.

Igmum · 12/12/2022 10:21

Wonderful wonderful thank you JKR ❤️

AuntieAunt · 12/12/2022 10:23

JKR is a hero. She never stops being amazing!

Moonatics · 12/12/2022 10:24

Ok tears in my eyes, I never expected something this huge would happen, ever.
She is a superstar woman.

Datun · 12/12/2022 10:25

That is epic on so many levels.

Providing a much needed valuable service for women and, at the same time, will be proving exactly why it is needed.

I wish she would run for political office.

Birdsweepsin · 12/12/2022 10:29

Can anyone guess what the Pink News headline will be?

JK Rowling's transphobic women's shelter fails to make Stonewalls Equality Index for the second week running

glasshole · 12/12/2022 10:29

This made me blub like a baby.

I'm currently in "top up" counselling with a lovely trauma informed female therapist that absolutely knows what a woman is. It took me 3-4 years to be able to find her though. In my last bout of counselling in 2012-2014 , this wasn't even really a "thing" ... We could say it was a man who had hurt us regardless of what he wanted or his feelings. We could name the sex that had abused us and destroyed our boundaries and left us bleeding on the floor with our lives in tatters.

Thank you Jo.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 10:29

The thing is, there are clear exemptions in the EA which mean it would be perfectly fine to have this as female only, single sex. And TRAs have referred to this during their 'all GRA reform does is allow you to change your birth certificate, thats literally it' rhetoric.

So they literally have nothing to complain about. There will definitely be those who claim this is 'unlawful' and I think it might get targeted. Time will tell.

JKR is absolutely amazing.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/12/2022 10:30

I wish she would run for political office.

tangent, but I’ve got to disagree with you there

millionaires buying political power is not a good precedent to set

just because I think JKR has integrity doesn’t mean the next one will

beastlyslumber · 12/12/2022 10:33

OMG this has made me cry! Fucking hell, Jo. What a brilliant person she is.

nilsmousehammer · 12/12/2022 10:33

SapphosRock · 12/12/2022 10:19

What an amazing woman she is!

Oh it'll go 'there's a resource only doing wonderful things, selfishly and hatefully, for females desperately in need, instead of being All About Males. Rage.'

and Jo will not care.

There are masses of resources now revolving entirely around the inner lives of male people at the expense of proper care or women-centred care for females, and some male people need to learn to cope with not absolutely everything being about them all the time. Particularly those at Pink News.

Datun · 12/12/2022 10:35

I bet she's not intending to leave it there, either. I bet there are plans to expand it, or roll it out elsewhere, or use it as a prototype to put pressure on the government to do so.

SirChenjins · 12/12/2022 10:35

Amazing news for this city 👏👏👏

nettie434 · 12/12/2022 09:57

What an amazing thing to have done. I was interested to see Margaret McCartney is involved. She is very impressive (as are the other women) but I've not heard her speak about this topic before. She is an advocate of evidence based medicine though 😀

She has written about it a few times, mostly about the harm done to children - this was right back in 2018:

www.bmj.com/content/360/bmj.k1312

I also saw her do a twitter thread about gender reassignment recently.

RaininginDarling · 12/12/2022 10:48

Such wonderful news. Nothing to add that hasn't already been said. Couldn't admire her more.

nauticant · 12/12/2022 10:48

Emma Barnett now discussing this on Woman's Hour. Saved till late in the show because (I suspect) they've been running around trying to get information and assemble their report. The news is so fresh I don't expect much analysis, which is never WH's strength in any case.

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/12/2022 10:49

Suzanne Moore about to speak on Womans Hour...

nauticant · 12/12/2022 10:49

The report is leading with the proposed changes to the law in Scotland. Suzanne Moore up shortly. Who got the scoop.
