Anti-trans activists are using ‘mirror propaganda'. Here's how to spot it

Anti-trans activists are using ‘mirror propaganda’. Here’s how to spot it
A technique deployed in Nazi Germany is now used to silence trans people while accusing them of silencing others

Natacha Kennedy
5 December 2022, 6.00am

The recent backlash against Graham Norton’s entirely reasonable suggestion that the media talks to more trans people was more revealing than people think.

He came dangerously close to exposing organised transphobia’s core campaign strategy, something they don’t want people talking about. In collaboration with mainstream media, its main strategy has been to liberally platform anti-trans narratives, hermetically exclude trans perspectives, and at the same time accuse trans people of ‘silencing’ transphobes.

For example, a transphobic group holds a rally somewhere – maybe a couple of dozen transphobes in a draughty church hall. There’s a protest outside. A journalist, with confected faux-indignation, then claims trans people are ‘silencing’ them.

Those claiming to be ‘silenced’ are then featured in every national mainstream media platform, something that caught the ire of Sara Ahmed, an independent academic and former professor of race and cultural studies at Goldsmiths University of London: “Whenever people keep being given a platform to say they have no platform, or whenever people speak endlessly about being silenced, you not only have a performative contradiction; you are witnessing a mechanism of power.”

material for mirror propaganda.

When you see anyone claiming trans people are silencing them, it’s part of a mirror propaganda operation.

For mirror propaganda to work, you need complete control over mainstream media. It is a hardcore, military-grade propaganda technique now being deployed by some of the most powerful people in the country against one of the smallest minorities. In a situation where mainstream media is entirely one-sided, its writers can no longer be considered ‘journalists’, but propagandists. Those who platform them while excluding those they target are not ‘editors’, they are censors.

Nazi Germany and Rwandan genocide
The invention of mirror propaganda has been attributed to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, and so far the earliest identified deployments of it are by Goebbels and Himmler in 1940s Germany, targeting Jewish people.

More recently, Alison Des Forges and Jean-Pierre Cretien identified mirror propaganda as a significant factor in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, when hundreds of thousands of Tutsi men, women and children were slaughtered in a six-week orgy of murder.

Susan Benesch, director of the Dangerous Speech Project at Harvard University, has also identified mirror propaganda as one of the main techniques for inciting genocide.

However, mirror propaganda is also deployed in other ways against trans people – such as when anti-trans activists claim (without evidence) that trans people are a ‘danger’ to cis women. On the contrary, the real danger to cis women comes from the politics of the far right, particularly homophobic and anti-abortion fundamentalists that ‘gender-critical’ transphobes sometimes collaborate with, and are funded by, to the tune of millions of dollars.

In addition to safe and legal abortion, these extremist groups oppose contraception, equal marriage, equal adoption, IVF and ‘Gillick competence’ – the legal principle that young people have the ability to give consent to their own medical treatment.

Through the wedge issue of transphobia, self-identified gender-critical ‘feminists’ have opened the door for the far-right’s homophobia and misogyny. After investing all this money, are they really going to stop at just harming trans people?

So who is deploying mirror propaganda? Global Action for Trans Equality recently produced an analysis of organised transphobia in Britain. What’s most striking is how the connections between well-funded right-wing evangelical organisations, ‘gender-critical’ groups and mainstream media are so numerous that they appear almost indistinguishable from each other. Yet their modus operandi is where these groups most obviously align.

Mirror propaganda is an extreme right-wing political strategy now being deployed by ‘nice’ middle-class transphobes and ‘respectable’ establishment journalists normalising the exclusion of trans people’s voices. Transphobes, from their media bully-pulpits, with contrived self-righteous fervour, routinely claim we are silencing them while they are actually silencing us.

This tells you all you need to know about the complete absence of integrity and sincerity in those who oppose trans and non-binary people’s human rights.

So comparing trans people to the victims of Nazi and Rwandan genocide?

They are certifiable.

It's the old Schrodinger's Terf, isn't it - simultaneously a tiny number of women so pathetic and lacking in influence that they can only gather in a draughty church hall and an immensely powerful organisation, backed by wealthy US right-wing evangelists, who are wielding enormous influence in the UK media.

Christ, these people are thick. Natacha, love, don't ever try finding your arse with both hands because I wouldn't want you to fall over and hurt yourself.

Accusation is admission isn’t it? A tiny handful of heterosexual late ‘transitioning’ males, backed up by billionaire megabucks (and of the course the sharp end of MRAs are necessarily female - to cut through opposition - SG and Whittle).

I was looking for a link before, to try to find Hellen/Kennedy’s paper and I stumbled upon this old forum. I bet this was the lot of them in those early stages. A small handful.

Just been reading some replies to the original open democracy tweet.

A couple really annoyed me.

One bloke saying it was fine to put men in women's prisons cos men work in prisons. Yeah, but those men haven't actually murdered two women have they?

And another TRA responded to someone tweeting the Terf is a slur website, with a collection of "terf threats of violence". The first person replied they condemn all threats of violence, to which the TRA went on a huge long multi tweet rant. Not condemning violence of cause.

They truly have no idea how they badly come across.

I believe Kennedy works at Goldsmiths and teaches in the Department of Educational Studies? Imagine training to be a teacher there? How can students ever raise any nuanced issues about child psychology / development, the research into sex based issues in the classroom, school systems and relating to learning?
No wonder so many young teachers arrive in schools believing that people can literally change sex and that concerns about children being exploited and gaslit by lobby groups is bigotry if they're faced daily with such appalling un evidenced and inflammatory drivel?

Hence mermaids using goldsmiths for their most recent research. One of the phd students has done a lot of "research" into "trans kid" inclusion in primary education. (Though I did see they were annoyed that they weren't shortlisted for a lecturer job as there's been 6000 applicants...)

It's a massive issue for teacher training colleges at the moment.

I just read that whole thing without being able to work out who you were saying the baddies were.

For most of it I thought you were saying that transactivists were setting up feminists and oppressing women.

I can also assure Natacha that none of us gender-critical women would bother to hold a protest meeting outside

Mumsnet would encourage discussion and to facilitate it would offer lunch and snack bags. (I can't find a thread where this was discussed but I remember it well. It was a meeting in Bristol/Bath where TRAs were discussing women's opposition to the GRA 2004.)

If transactivists are complaining that they are being silenced, there's a simple solution.

And I, for one, would be right behind a campaign to have them platformed on all the 'national mainstream media platforms' they want.

TV discussions, invited onto Women's Hour, doing a web chat on Mumsnet, the lot.

Plus, of course, they've got the entire length and breadth of Twitter and Natacha Kennedy should absolutely continue to post there. Regularly.

Sorted. Here's the mic, Natacha, off you go.

Tigger7654 · 07/12/2022 08:45

On the one hand GC feminists are apparently so influential the entire UK they have complete control over mainstream media whilst also only being a couple of dozen transphobes in a draughty church hall, sounds likely 🤷

Let's break this down a bit.

So Kennedy characterises meetings as a couple of dozen women at best, i.e. a tiny group of women meeting at a time. Kennedy is doing this to make us seem insignificant, and unworthy of being listened to.

However, that is also an admission that the group of women is not a physical threat, and that any group of males outside will be extremely intimidating. You cannot have it both ways, mate.

These meetings occur in church halls, described as draughty. So vulnerable to the elements, and also noise from protestors outside. This is also serving as an appeal to ridicule, emphasising that we have shoe-string budgets, restricting us to cheaper church halls, because we can't afford purpose-built conference facilities. But I thought feminists were supposed to be in receipt of "millions" of American money? It says that here! Again, you cannot have it both ways, mate.

But the awful thing in all this is if a journalist in attendance speaks out about the protest. Not the protest. If someone describes what it is like for a teeny-tiny group of women to know men are gathering outside the building, and to be confronted by that organised mass of men outside.

What about if activists simply did not mob a church hall in the first place?

Yes, and despite our tiny numbers and insignificance, After investing all this money, are they really going to stop at just harming trans people? What money is this, if we’re shivering in church halls?

It would be funny, if the glib comparisons to the Holocaust and Rwandan genocide weren’t so disgusting.

TheYummyPatler · 07/12/2022 09:02

I’m also very happy to let the gender ideologists speak.

Because the more they say, and the more they say it to very generalist audiences, the more people will hear what gender ideologists are trying to achieve.

When all people hear is ‘be kind’ and no further details, it’s easy to assume it’s just about being nice to a very small number poor, vulnerable people. People need to hear the full extent of what TRAs say and do on twitter in other contexts. The public needs to be able to her what TRAs actually think and want.

Give them megaphones and an audience that isn’t the gender faithful. Encourage them to share their ideas and practices, in full, with everyone and anyone.

Datun · 07/12/2022 10:23

From the feminist lawyer offer to debate any other lawyer on the subject.

"Nevertheless I wholeheartedly relish the prospect of this debate: I am fearless of anyone, however distinguished or brilliant they may be, because I am so sure of my ground. The opposing positions are so riddled with logical fallacies, circular arguments and flat-out idiocies that none of my gender uncritical colleagues – not one single one of them – has the stomach for
trying to defend them publicly in friendly rational dialogue with me."

TRAs complaint that no one will listen to them when they know their argument is full of 'flat out idiocies,' is probably one of the least effective tactics, in their Big Book of Crap Tactics.

Janie143 · 07/12/2022 11:25

I think you've all got it wrong. Natacha "and" Mark intend to use that piece in an academic paper to illustrate exactly how DAVRO works.
