Canadian drag queen 'Jimbo' is touring the UK in January. Shows are advertised as for 14+, so suitable for children. Seem to be shows in London, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and others.

'Most of Insell’s past live performances appear to be highly explicit, with members of the audience often being invited to touch his breast prosthetics. The performances also feature highly sexual, suggestive acts, such as Insell stuffing the vagina of a blow-up doll with money while audience members cheered. Insell has also dressed as a blow-up doll, complete with inflatable vulva, during past performances.'

This person's outfits and acts are common or garden misogyny, attempting to squeeze every last drop of cash out of an increasingly exhausted seam of 'dullard's queasy shock-fest'. I've had enough of men leering at women like this, and being celebrated for it. Take your inflatable suit and fuck off, Jimbo.

We know that when people tell you who they are …

I'm not going to defend Jimbo, I've seen him on TV and he has made me laugh at times, although I'm not at all comfortable with all of his act. No, I don't think his live show should be 14+. It is adult entertainment.

But these dates are part of an established circuit for RuPaul's Drag Race contestants and I've noticed before the 14+ doors whoever the entertainer is. So I'm not minded to think this is Jimbo's call so much as an ongoing thing with promoters and venues.

I'm not sure I can believe it's purely accidental that they advertise it as 14+. Maybe I've seen too many drag queens that seem to aim their shows at children.

It raised my eyebrows a while back but didn't make a connection - just assumed that was in line with the Drag Race demographic these days (I had previously seen shows in gay bars - so 18+ - before this move into gig venues). See it differently now.

Not to say there is not red flags here but it could well be something Jimbo personally knows nothing about.

WarriorN · 04/12/2022 17:45

I've mentioned it before but the trans issue split the circus world a few years ago. Sadly my main vocal contact de friended me on fb, no great loss but I'd been following a lot of it via him .

The majority went full tra BUT as it's circus and many are athletes, I've noted in fb groups they call people xy people or xx people in order to be able to discuss the effects that hormones can have on bodies....(!) Also a trend for acrobatic / super flexible non binary women getting mastectomies.

Clowns are less athletic so this doesn't surprise me.

There's also the pshe circus which does sex Ed shows, heavily lgbtq inclusive.

I know a lot of circus performers here, randomly, and there was a time I'd merrily let my kids go to their holiday clubs. Not now, unless delivered by one woman I know and trust.

ArabellaScott · 04/12/2022 18:13

Hm, I can imagine theatre in general being very tense on this issue.

That's really interesting, Warrior.

This is so very sad though.

plinkypots · 04/12/2022 18:38

It should be 18+ with an upper IQ limit...

WarriorN · 04/12/2022 19:11

I don't think these people are clowns.

That's getting full on fetish on stage

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 04/12/2022 19:23

I agree with you about fetish. But presumably people will do their research before going, or letting kids go, although people in general do seem, often, to be stupid.

I can imagine there may be teenage boys who wish to go to this.

Doesn't mean it is a good idea to allow them to do so.

Dunno. My own DS would run a mile from anything "rude", thank goodness!

The theater world is terrible on any id pol issues. Completely toxic.

I adore some forms of drag, the fashion and beauty side. But stuff like this knocks me sick. It's just gross

I love drag too, when it’s done well, but Jimbo just wasn’t funny or clever or beautiful IMO, and absolutely NOT suitable for younger teenagers. I remember watching “adult” standup like Billy Connolly at that age, but sexually explicit drag is in a completely different league.

ArabellaScott · 04/12/2022 22:21

MargaritaPie · 04/12/2022 22:12

Ah, this one?

'A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers received a report of threatening messages being made online in relation to a planned show at Dundee Contemporary Arts gallery.

“Following enquiries, no criminality was established.”'

No, this is a different drag queen.

FrancescaContini · 04/12/2022 22:22

Sounds absolutely fucking appalling, the whole “show”. Surely the name is a play on Incel. I feel sickened by this. The body suit, the stuffing of money into a fake vagina - or “man-gina”. Grotesque.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 05/12/2022 00:15

MargaritaPieWas it this one?No. See the names and pictures posted in the previous tweet in the timeline, from that account; you know, before the one you screen shot. No mention of a 'Jimbo the Clown', and at least one of the performers is Scottish, not Canadian. If you wish to discuss these other acts, please start another thread. I think Jimbo deserves his own thread.

I enjoy drag, but really dislike Jimbo, he's an unpleasant person and I hate his drag style too, So crude and agree its not suitable for teenagers!

ArabellaScott · 05/12/2022 08:58

Yes. It looks fucking awful, but if adults choose to watch it, that's their choice; fine.

14 year olds, not so much.

I mean, why are there so many men who want to parody women? Why is it such a big thing? All the big names in drag, all the shows, all the 'faces' are males parodying women. We just don't see females parodying men so much. Punching down seems to be more popular for some reason.
