To give us courage: I listened to this Case File podcast episode this morning about Franca Viola who defied the Italian tradition of having to marry her rapist.

Brave, brave woman.

Franca Viola

How weird, I just learned about Franca Viola this morning.

Her decision not to marry took some guts. I was issuing angry swear words at frequent intervals throughout this podcast. It took a further 15 years for the law to change!

chilling19 · 03/12/2022 18:36

Yes me too! I was really rooting for her and hoping she would come out the other end. She was (is) so brave.

I had a horrible feeling that after so much injustice he would be found not guilty. She took on the mob and misogyny and won. It's hard to believe that such laws still existed in my lifetime.

chilling19 · 03/12/2022 19:34

I know. She took on the law, the mafia and the culture. I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing - a man could Rape you, bully you into marriage and this was legal?

Women like this inspire me in our current situation - she stood against everything and won (I thought he would come back and kill her to be honest - and so did she). The dad deserves an honourable mention too.

It's literally a biblical rule, and it was law in 20th century Europe. It's horrific.

Just popped on here as I'm behind on listening Casefile so just learned of her today too. A quick Google search returned me to this thread.
The level of resolve and courage she has shown is phenomenal.

Her parents really did amazingly, considering the times, to support her.
I also thought her husband decent who, despite the stigma attached to a dishonoured woman, married her.

Flabbergasted by the laws that existed which allowed women to be abused this way and to be standard practice.
