Queen Camilla highlighting VAWG

I’m really happy to see Camilla stepping up her campaigning on this difficult and unfashionabe social emergency. It’s good to see that from the RF- the current crop of politicians and celebrities tend to avoid talking about VAWG, presumably in order not to offend men, out of indifference to the lives of women and girls or just out of ignorance. Because culturally our society seems to find this issue so difficult to confront it’s usually ignored. Plus condemnation and threat inevitably comes to women who define women and girls as the specific group at risk or talks about their needs without centring men.

Someone high profile is needed to raise VAWG into the UK news agenda, otherwise it’s just going to continue to be accepted as the norm that 2-3 women are killed each week here. This issue needs action and funding which only comes from sustained political and cultural attention. So I am glad Camilla has raised it again in her new job title and I really hope she will keep going with it.

Good.

No idea if it will help though. I fear it's getting worse

ResisterRex · 30/11/2022 06:57

It's got worse. I think we're in the worst situation women have been in for a very long time. Camilla and Sophie have done a lot on DV, rape and SV but rarely got the coverage for it.

Hopefully the TRAs won't be so dense as to demand Camilla accepts males into the definition of women. Although if they did, I'd like to think she would be having none of it.

I’m just really glad she’s raising it more visibly in her new job, whereas there was a lot made of how Charles has had to dial it down around the climate crisis (even though it’s worse and more urgent than ever before… Hmm).

I had a delivery man commenting on the climate on Monday on my doorstep- he felt it had gone too far.

But that's because he's seeing it now.

If those with power can get every one, especially men to see it, we may have a chance.

LizzieSiddal · 30/11/2022 10:14

I was very pleased to see coverage of this in the media today yesterday.

Beowulfa · 30/11/2022 12:59

I think Camilla has been active in this cause for a long time, also in adult literacy. Neither are fahionable issues so hope she uses all her clout.

Hooverphobe · 30/11/2022 13:04

The work her and Sophie have been doing is superb.

plus you know if Camilla were a friend you could phone her at 2am and she’d roll up in a 1973 merc held together with bale twine, pile you and your dogs into the car and drive you to safety in a fug of silk cut.

Buckingham Palace aide resigns over remarks to black charity boss

this is really depressing though-racist comments at the launch event which looked big, high profile and inclusive in the previous reporting of it.

MangyInseam · 30/11/2022 18:02

I don't know, I would not say that an elderly woman who clearly is trying to ask about an individual's background is making a "clearly racist comment." There are a lot of id pol assumptions that need to be in place before recognizing that someone's ancestors came from another country becomes a viewpoint on the relative worth of various races.

StillWeRise · 30/11/2022 18:18

it's a real shame that the work done by Camilla has been overshadowed by a racist
I was impressed to see she'd gathered a few other 'first ladies' let's hope it gets reported worldwide
