Quizzes on TV.

What is it about quizzes these days? For some reason I have been watching more than usual, probably to avoid the football. It appears that every one has to have a trans male /drag queen on … so much so it is now becoming a cliché. Far from being a small oppressed minority, we can’t get a quiz without them. Obviously anyone can apply , fine, but there is a lot of bias in who the producers are picking. Not many older lesbians to be seen though.

What quizzes have you been watching? I thought I watched a lot and haven’t seen this? Would be interesting to see though as always in need of a new quiz show!

Optimist1 · 29/11/2022 22:41

One of the team captains on University Challenge this week was m/f trans.

In the context of the history of the show, the representation of all sexes, that doesn’t seem too out of the ordinary?

Ramblingnamechanger · 29/11/2022 23:19

Firen there are only two sexes. An example of the drag queen was the show about lying, tonight( maybe this doesn’t count as a quiz )
University challenge, only connect also.

In the space of a few days, I read about Emma Laslett on Brain of Britain, saw one called Linda on The Chase, then an hour later a friend messaged me to say she'd spotted one on University Challenge. So it did suddenly seem like a lot coming under my radar all at once. I don't have a problem with them so long as they are not described as being part of an all-female final, or team, or the first woman to win such and such.

ApocalipstickNow · 30/11/2022 06:58

I can’t see a problem with trans people on quiz shows.

Ramblingnamechanger · 30/11/2022 08:12

I still think that the numbers on these shows are excessive given that they are supposed to be a small and vulnerable minority. Count the older lesbians…

How would you know if someone on a quiz show was a lesbian though? Unless they happen to mention "my wife"

cofeetablebook · 30/11/2022 08:18

I guess op just doesn't like "them"?

MoMuntervary · 30/11/2022 08:26

Maybe people just feel more comfortable to be 'out' on telly than they used to?

I have no idea how you would know how many lesbians are on. Unless Alexander Armstrong has started asking contestants about a wider range of hobbies than usual?

Ch3wylemon · 30/11/2022 08:32

This annoys me far less than the constant parade of drag queens. Contestants on OC and UC (less so the chase) are there on merit regardless of their identity.

The drag queens on the wheel or blankety blank on the other hand...

Firen · 30/11/2022 10:52

What are you going to do, make everyone fill out a detailed questionnaire concerning their sexual preferences? How would you know someone is a lesbian just by looking? I watch so many quizzes, as do my family and I’ve not noticed an over representation on any set expect for middle aged white males.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 30/11/2022 10:55

What annoys me about this is that it's seen as some sort of quota filling on their diversity angle. Nope. A Drag Queen is not ticking any diversity boxes mate. A transman or transwoman may well tick some box, but when it's every time, and no other diversity boxes are ever aimed for, it's ridiculous.

Quite! Trans women and trans men and anyone can be on quiz shows - why not? Only an issue for me if, as someone said, it’s touted as an “all female” panel or similar when it isn’t. But otherwise go ahead, everyone join in!

Beowulfa · 30/11/2022 12:05

The contestants are rightly there on merit; the trans team captain on University Challenge was strong this week.

Of course it shouldn't be surprising to see transwomen in this sphere; quizzing has been traditionally male dominated.

Interesting that they're immediately identifiable as transwomen, you know, not women.
