“But it isn’t possible if each side looks on the other as an enemy and the trans people just shout ‘terf’ (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) and the feminists seem to, as it were, undermine the dignity and rights of the trans community, if I can use the word community – it is a bit of a greasy word, but there you go.”

Stephen Fry urges clam then compares what one side is doing with what the other side seems to be doing

I'm so fed up with these people who seem to think that there is any symmetry to the two viewpoints in this issue. There isn't.

It's entirely bloody reasonable for women to not want to get changed in front of random men. It's entirely reasonable to not want male criminals, including rapists and paedophiles, to be housed with incarcerated females. It's actually inhumane to think otherwise.

And, of course, it's entirely reasonable to want to preserve women's sport! Who the hell would think otherwise?

ArabellaScott · 19/11/2022 18:30

Ah, he's a Humanist. I am unsurprised at that.

Victoria Smith shared this article, however. I had no idea. I suppose ignoring him all these years was probably the best policy.

'Stephen Fry has apologised for remarks that suggested he believed survivors of sexual abuse who pity themselves should “grow up”.

The actor and broadcaster, who is president of the mental health charity Mind, was criticised for the comments'

Oh well, after reading the article, it's unsurprising that he has never thought how awful it would be for women to have to access a rape refuge where a man was pretending to be a woman and told them if they don't agree, they need to 'reframe their trauma'.

It’s a great shame and we’re all very sorry that your uncle touched you in that nasty place – you get some of my sympathy – but your self-pity gets none of my sympathy because self-pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity.”

The 58-year-old went on to say: “Grow up.”

His apology involves him saying that's not what he meant. How the fuck else can you interpret that??

WomaninBoots · 19/11/2022 19:06

Goodness. I didn't realise he was quite such an all out arsehole. I just thought he was a bit of a wanker round the edges.

Hilarious that he's now a TERF. Don't advocate for reasonable, calm debate Mr Fry... very very TERFy that.

JanieAllen · 19/11/2022 12:29

I shall carry on undermining the dignity of the trans 'community' while it thinks it ok to have a man running a rape crisis centre, men pretending to be women in women's prisons, telling lesbians they need to get with 'girldick', and stealing women's sports trophies.

Absolutely!

TheBiologyStupid · 19/11/2022 19:31

FFS! SF is nowhere near as clever as he thinks he is.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 19/11/2022 20:55

Trans person gets misgendered, or a woman refuses to get her kit off in front of them: gosh how awful, their human rights and dignity are being denied them.

Woman is struggling with trauma from sexual abuse: your self-pity gets none of my sympathy because self-pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity.

Fuck you, Stephen Fry.

Quite.

The male head of a rape refuge is denied their 'right' to force rape survivors to pretend they're not a man.

Perhaps Stephen Fry could discover some perspective.

And, of course, it will be six of one because TRAs disagree with him too.

humanists.uk/join-humanists-uk-stephen-fry/

I find secular humanism such an odd thing, it almost seems like an aesthetic value for people like Fry.

ArabellaScott · 19/11/2022 21:06

On paper I'm all for Humanists. But ...

WomaninBoots, you have it exactly, 'wanky around the edges' was my understanding!

NashvilleQueen · 20/11/2022 07:29

Also having a husband 30 years his junior is pretty sleazy.

HootyMcboob76 · 20/11/2022 10:36

Statistically speaking , given that true "intersex" conditions represent approximately 0.018% of live births, Stephen must know literally THOUSANDS of people and class them as "friends" to have any possibility of having "many intersex friends".

Bullshit.

AuntMunca · 20/11/2022 16:42

There's a good article in the Spectator by Brendan O'Neill on Stephen Fry's comments:

www.spectator.co.uk/article/what-happened-to-stephen-frys-belief-in-scientific-reason/

TheKeatingFive · 20/11/2022 19:28

That is one cracking article. Absolutely nails it.

WomaninBoots · 20/11/2022 20:06

Spot on Mr O'Neill.

RoyalCorgi · 20/11/2022 20:36

That's bang on Brendan. Absolute clarity in exposing the contradiction in Fry's position. How can you possibly be claim to be pro-science and pro-rationality while simultaneously pretending that people can change sex?

As Brendan says:

"One side promotes cuckoo post-science theories that upend women’s rights and cause grave harm to the young. The other side does not. What, exactly, are Ms Rowling and other gender-critical women meant to ‘retreat’ from? From science? From biological reality? From their belief that men are not women? From their own spaces?"

Quite.

I suspect Mr Fry would never ‘retreat’ from his humanism and embrace the superstitious claims of religion, so it is strange that he is essentially advising women to do precisely that.

It's because Mr Fry is a man, and absolutely sees transwomen as men.

Does anyone really think he would be denying science, kowtowing to a deluded minority and claiming that akcherly some superficial offence is absolutely beyond the pale, if it was on behalf of women??

You know what? There's no part of me that doesn't accept that the patriarchy is made up of patriarchal men.

But when they fucking go out of their way to set themselves up as a supporter of science, and reality, and tell everyone who'll listen that being offended is in the realms of 'so fucking what', I honestly cannot see them as anything other than teeny, tiny people, and my contempt is genuine.

ArabellaScott · 20/11/2022 21:34

Yes, that bit especially.

TheBiologyStupid · 20/11/2022 22:21

Yes, a very powerful piece. (My favourite bits have been quoted already, so I'll leave it at that, but bravo Brendan)

FannyCann · 11/12/2022 13:41

And now he's planning on renting a womb to start a family.

He knows what a woman is alright and he may not want to go eat one for sex but he's happy to use them to breed.

Stephen Fry, 65, reveals his biggest regret is not having children

Helleofabore · 11/12/2022 13:59

Right. So talking to a clinic about it, maybe it will be a joint family arrangement with a woman who will be a part of the family…

I expect not, but still I would hope.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 11/12/2022 14:34

WomaninBoots · 19/11/2022 15:36

Why are these men always so thick? Go read Helen Joyce's book before wading in, you arrogant fucks. Just gets one decent background on the issue before spouting off.

As for the sex comments... maybe if he lives in a physically weaker body that could get pregnant he might be less keen on shagging random strangers in bushes too. Fuckssake.

Does he have a PO box? I'd happily purchase a couple of copies to send to him.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/12/2022 14:44

we never talked about it to the extent of ''Right, so, we're going to a clinic tomorrow to talk this through to some expert''.

Who knows why they didn't discuss it but omitting the 'never' changes the meaning of what he said.

Happylittlechicken · 11/12/2022 15:15

So I’ll assume he’s be asking one of his many transwomen friends to have a baby for him? What with them being women according to him. Or do you things like Owen jones and Adrian Harrop he knows exactly what a woman is when it suits him?
