I might be Scottish but for probably the first time in my life I'm so bloody glad I don't live in Scotland.

To those of you stuck there going through this madness my heart with you.

I know it's serious, but I had to laugh at the idea that making a false declaration would be subject to a notional two year prison sentence. Surely, a male wanting his birth certificate changed to say he is female is himself making a false declaration in the first place? Or does something become true merely because someone believes it to be true?

Sentimentaleducation · 18/11/2022 22:51

Thanks for posting. Janice again summarises this madness so clearly.

"Last year the Scottish government allowed GRC-holders to change the date and location of their weddings on their marriage certificates to protect their identity."

Wtf! You can change the date and location on your wedding certificate?

What is the point of these documents if they contain completely incorrect information?

How does doing this protect a person's identity?

I didn't know about this. It seems bizarre.

Or that, cynically, she would like the Westminster government to strike down her new GRA if it believes it undermines protections under the Equality Act. Then Sturgeon could enjoy a proxy nationalist battle in the Supreme Court: see how the English won’t let us make our own laws!

Could this be what it's all about?

Thinking practicalities, if a wife has kept her maiden name a marriage certificate is one of the documents she can present when travelling with her children if they have their father’s surname and their father isn’t accompanying them. So now you could have a marriage certificate which post-dates the children’s birthdates and has two women’s names. Does the father/spouse have to write a permission letter in his “dead name” so his wife can travel with her own children? Nuts. Absolutely fucking nuts.

Indeed.

In the last few months I have realised that I can never move back. Not now. Not whilst this madness continues.

I have a school age daughter. My 1st priority is to my kids and they would be too much at risk up the road (they would also get a much shattered education than I did thanks to SNP).

Bit of an own goal if the vast majority of Scots collectively breathe a sigh of relief and conclude their rights and reality are better protected within the union.
