Suffragette Lanyard

I have just taken delivery of my suffragette lanyard, ordered after seeing one mentioned on the suffragette scarf on here . I have no idea whether anyone at work will so much as notice, let alone accuse me of being a hateful bigot for wearing it, but anything seems possible in these crazy times. So am wondering what approach to take if asked about it.

  1. "It's purple and green. I like purple and green" <innocent smile>

  2. "It's suffragette colours. I'm an ardent feminist and enthusiastically wearing the colours of the brave women who fought for our rights. What do you mean anti-trans? I know of no such thing. It's pro-women, that's not anti-trans." <Innocent smile>

I'm more inclined towards 2 - but feel like if it does somehow cause unbearable trauma then admitting it's intended to make a statement is more likely to result in me being asked to refrain from wearing it, which I would potentially escalate (as I'd tell them to feck off)

Which do you think is the best approach?

I would go with 2, too.

Baaaaaa · 18/11/2022 18:32

I think you're fucking brave! They will try and re-educate you though. There will be no escaping. Are you sure? This ideology is vicious.

picklemewalnuts · 18/11/2022 18:33

Wish I needed a lanyard! It's subtle enough for me to get away with.

SoggyBananaLoaf · 18/11/2022 18:34

I'd go with 2, too and point out the significance of the colours.

LuciferRising · 18/11/2022 18:42

I'd point out the meaning of the colours too.

Baaaaaa · 18/11/2022 18:47

If you have any pronoun people at work, when you are "corrected", If you don't immediately capitulate, the outcome will be the same as if you had been honest in the first place.

MMAMPWGHAP · 18/11/2022 18:48

‘I was given it. Couldn’t see any reason not to use it’

Whatwherewherewhat · 18/11/2022 18:48

I have the scarf 😊

Signalbox · 18/11/2022 18:54

2 is perfect.

Whatwherewherewhat · 18/11/2022 18:55

Oh and 2 sounds good to me

NellesVilla · 18/11/2022 18:57

“It’s very nice isn’t it? I’m a woman supporting women. Votes for women.”

Tinkly laugh…

Boiledbeetle · 18/11/2022 19:16

Go with option 2 and play dumb for a good hour whilst they try to explain their thought process. At every point identify as a five year old and ask "but why?"

Knickerbockergloria · 18/11/2022 19:36

Thanks all, will go for 2.I think most likely it will go wholly unnoticed, so will be interesting to see if anything does come up

Where can I get a lanyard please?

dementedma · 18/11/2022 20:05

I wear this. Nobody has asked so far. If they do I will explain why. If they dont like it I will tell them to fuck off

I kind of want one because of its GC symbolism but I’m in two minds about it. Being from a mixed race and Irish family, I don’t feel like I would have been able to support the suffragettes 100%.

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 18/11/2022 20:17

namechange10022002 what is the reason for not feeling comfortable with the Suffragettes please? Both of those things are important to me too so if there's unacceptable Suffragette history around them I'd like to know (if you don't mind sharing)

Scout2016 · 18/11/2022 20:20

I've ordered the scarf and wondered about this too. I plan to go with option 2. If pressed I will say I feel women's rights are in a bad way and getting worse ... abortion rights being rolled back in supposedly progressive countries. Women in Afghanistan not being allowed to go to the park... it's hard to argue that they aren't.

One of the things I thought the LGB Alliance did really well in their evidence was keep zooming out to the bigger picture, reminding of the world outside the TRA bubble.

I do not plan on mentioning anything trans related.

dandelionthistle · 18/11/2022 20:59

Only five years ago some network or other within the civil service was giving away these! Funny how quickly things change. Grin

The Suffragette colours have been worn esp in Scotland as part of the campaign to keep women only spaces e.g. no men (or people born with a penis) in rape crisis centres. Because of that they are considered anti-trans. The colours are pro-women - trans activists seem to have a problem with this idea as well - and a strong symbol of the struggle for women's rights, which is both ongoing and under attack. Wear them if you wish.

Well, did you know that this December 6th, under the Anglo-Irish treaty forming the Irish Free State and from Article 14 therein, women not only of property and 30 years old*, were given the vote? Six years before that extension in the UK, so be proud on that account, I guess?🤷🏻‍♀️

*I celebrate 2022, not only 2018, for these reasons.
