This the on-campus signage that was displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP).

Earlier today on-campus signage at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP) was shared on social media.

Our intention, following discussions with our student community, had been to communicate the definition of TERF (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist) to help clarify what we considered to be growing misconceptions around what the term means.

We got it wrong.

The signage is clunky and we can see how it can be misinterpreted as an ICMP view and/or policy.

The signage has now been removed and we apologise profusely for any offence caused.

So they thought they would just double down on those misconceptions by implying that biological women hate trans people? What?

Also, trans men are more than welcome in women's spaces, what with them being women and all 😒

I would love to know how many complaints they got 🤣

Imagine that sign was any other protected belief like say, Judaism or Islam …

That is very fucked up.

I wonder if the group responsible understands the issue at all. And whether they also understand the hypocrisy of their ‘anti-discrimination’ sign.

So if someone felt victimised, discriminated or uncomfortable for having gender critical beliefs they could make a confidential report against everyone who helped create that sign.

That was not an apology or an explanation, the sign was discriminatory and they need to address this.

There response is one of the best examples of gaslighting I've ever seen. They must think people are absolutely stupid.

But how can they get it so wrong?
1 transmen are obviously welcome in womens toilets etc
2 the times says gc think biological gender cannot change, er no they don't believe in gender stereotypes. Literally the opposite of that!
3 it is not a complex issue, single sex spaces are clear in the EA

The chief executive of the college must be way cleverer than I am. I can’t see how that sign could possibly be misinterpreted. The message is absolutely clear.

It's like the classic rumours spread to demonise other groups.

That apology is the absolute definition of "sorry not sorry". Clunky! No mate, it was erroneous, illegal, discriminatory and frankly scary.

It's a ridiculous apology. Clearly the aim of the sign was not to clarify misconceptions about what TERF means (though in fact the definition they give is accurate, which is unusual). The aim of the sign was to encourage people to dob gender-critical feminists in for wrongthink. I don't know why they're pretending otherwise, given that we can all read what the sign says.
