Today's article in the Times Scotland:

In that case, as one definition of bigotry is hatred towards those with different beliefs or values, surely they would hold all the gender ideologists to the same standards, and punish anyone who abuses someone else for having a different opinion?

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 08/11/2022 06:49

Irrelevant, but I'm surprised to see "towing the government line" in a Times article. Don't they have subs any more?

Except that generally, only one side is intent on reporting the other. The fact that transphobia is specifically mentioned alongside bigotry is also a red flag regarding why these changes are being brought in. It’s hardly a neutral statement, is it?

Happylittlechicken · 08/11/2022 07:19

It’s definitely not a neutral statement. Notice they don’t specifically state homophobia? Almost like they’re only interested in one issue. I find it also interesting they won’t state who is in the group who drew up these guidelines. We’ve seen that trick
before.

Hoardasurass · 08/11/2022 07:53

@FurryDandelionSeekingMissile could you please explain to my dyslexic brain what subs have to do with the phrase "towing the government's line" is?
I see this as the beginning of the end for Stergon and her government as more people can see not only that this is her personal dictatorial mission which is actively harming women and children but that she's happy to lie, bully, threaten and coerce any and all dissenters.
This is not a good look for her especially when it has become obvious that she is actively targeting children behide their parents back (governments schools trans policy) and has lied about sandyford using WPATH guidelines whilst not only defending it but refusing to acknowledge the Cass review or any medical data that proves the harms of affirmation therapy.
This scandal is going to make the contaminated blood scandal look like a minor blip and it's all been laid at her feet.
Honestly I can't understand why she's so invested in pushing this agenda as I'm already hearing people comparing her (less favourably) to Margaret Thatcher

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/11/2022 08:02

@Hoardasurass
It’s a reference to sub-editors proof reading the article.
It should be “toeing the line” i.e. sticking to an agreed position/ following a rule not “towing” as in pulling.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 08/11/2022 08:06

I am confused - this is written about in The Times as a Scottish issue and the Scottish Books Trust is a different charity to the Book Trust (which I am a Direct Debit donor to) but neither of them is "The Books Trust" as in the thread title so I am going to ask MNHQ to change the title.

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 08/11/2022 08:06

@Hoardasurass sure — and it's nothing to do with your dyslexia either, just a common variant that usually wouldn't turn up in the Times. The original phrase is "toeing the line", as in standing with your toes lined up with a mark indicating where you should stand. It often gets heard as "towing the line". Since "towing" could still make sense as a metaphor, people often write it that way. It's not important either way, but it's the kind of thing a newspaper subeditor would usually pick up on and change.

Babasghost · 08/11/2022 08:07

The transtapo have taken over.
Red flag

Hoardasurass · 08/11/2022 08:14

@FurryDandelionSeekingMissile it is the dyslexia because I didn't even see the miss spelling as such your comment made zero sense to me as I knew the turn of phrase.
So whilst I thank you for the explanation perhaps you shouldn't try and tell other people how their dyslexia affect them as its very condescending

Igneococcus · 08/11/2022 08:16

I assume that the fact "book trust" isn't capitalized in the title of the article it's not meant to be the name for the specific book trust but that it's meant to read as "a book trust issued new code". I'm not a native English speaker though, I'm not entirely clear on the rules.

I apologise, I wasn't trying to explain your dyslexia to you, I've just come across hundreds and hundreds of incidences of people using "towing the line". Clearly almost nobody notices the difference, dyslexic or not, otherwise the variant wouldn't get into print so much.

Tallisker · 08/11/2022 13:40

The article says 'toeing' now

littlbrowndog · 08/11/2022 15:47

"The trust declined to say who is on its equality, diversity and inclusion advisory group" 🧐

elephantseal · 08/11/2022 17:01

The trust declined to say who is on its equality, diversity and inclusion advisory group, which ensures “that our principles are more proactively embedded in all aspects of our work”. It states it is opposed to “all forms of bigotry”.

Right. Big red flag. If they meant they were against racism, homophobia or sexism, they'd have said that. There's only one form of 'bigotry' they are concerned about. 🙄🙄

wesayno · 08/11/2022 19:33

Didn't this lot have something to do with distributing Brenda Is [Not] A Sheep to all P1s?

JanieAllen · 08/11/2022 21:19

Does this have anything to do with Harry Josephines Giles?
