Miffed at Twitter

A tweeter posted that they were born female and are now a transman, and asked if GC women expected them to use the ladies toilets.

I replied, that they could, of course, "because you are a woman".

Within minutes Twitter had suspended my account, for harassment and/or hateful conduct! I was forced to delete the tweet AND I now can't tweet/retweet for 7 days.

How is it OK for this individual to tweet that they were born female, yet what I replied is deemed as hateful and harassing? I was simply replying to their question about whether they could still use the ladies toilets!

I thought Musk had promised to end this lunacy.

You’re not allowed to correctly sex individuals on here either, so take care. Exceptions are sometimes made when the individuals are demonstratively bad or criminal.

Twitter employees, until very recently (and quite possibly still) employed a man who claimed to be a woman, who had been convicted of rape, I think against his wife. Twitter is also a cesspit as well as horribly addictive. My life improved drastically after I left.

PriOn1 · 06/11/2022 21:23

“employed” should have been “included”.

I refused to delete a comment about a ferrets.
My 12 hour ban has been in appeal since May.

I miss my friends, but it's good to step back a bit. Twitter is a pit.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/11/2022 23:33

Okay, I'll bite. @KatMcBundleFace How did ferrets get you in trouble? Did they call you a nazi for cheese?

sweetgrapes · 06/11/2022 23:58

Or was it someone doing a reverse ferret?

waterwitch · 07/11/2022 06:02

I guess all boards have their rules. The stupid thing is that regular users will get used to using language which gets round them - gardening or the 3 letters we’re not allowed to mention here; and maybe ‘born female’ on Twitter (no idea if that’s allowed). All this just makes it harder for less frequent users to follow a conversation, which doesn’t help anybody.
It is, of course, always good to notice the language you can use on Twitter and how much less hateful that is 🙄

Musk has owned it a week. It will take longer than that to make moderation changes. Twitter will be unrecognisable in the next few years. He's almost certainly going to make it a multimedia platform, combining a YouTube alternative with a PayPal/revolut alternative, in addition to the current message boards. What he has in mind is very different to what it is now. So while we will see moderation changes soon, as he's fired most of the people who's jobs revolved around censorship. It will take time and really isn't his main goal.

TeenDivided · 07/11/2022 07:36

I wonder if 'yes because you were born female' would have been OK?

NonnyMouse1337 · 07/11/2022 08:09

A lot of these processes are automated. There are millions of posts on twitter each day and humans cannot physically monitor them.

What most likely happened is the person you responded to took offense at your reply, and reported your post claiming it was harassment / hurtful / abusive. It doesn't matter whether a post is objectively horrible or not. TRAs are good at harassing others by using automated moderation processes against anyone they take a dislike to. Normal people tend to only report something if it's genuinely horrible. Activist types will report even the most innocuous post - it's a form of childish retaliation.

Like I said, there are millions of posts on twitter each day. The easiest way to automate any kind of moderation is to automatically suspend an account the moment the system receives a report for harassment / hate.
An automated notification will inform the user to delete the posts etc etc.

What you must always do is appeal the decision. Then an actual human being will review the post and the report against it, and either the decision is upheld or overturned. Of course if the human moderator is also a gender zealot, then you're kinda screwed. Even if there's nothing in your post to warrant suspension, they might find a way to avoid reinstating your account. I don't know if there's a way to push your appeal ticket to the bottom of the pile, so to speak, so it doesn't get looked at by any other staff. Who knows.....

I have no idea what the actual algorithms are at Twitter, but this is what I think happens by seeing how the system functions and based on what people have described over time.

And as another person said, Musk has only owned it for a week. I don't know why people think there's going to be instantaneous change on such a large platform. There isn't a magic button to press.
There's major reorganization of staff going on at the moment, and there will be all kinds of priorities like putting in place plans to make the application generate money via subscription fees etc.
There will be software (and staffing) changes needed to overhaul the moderation process, but I suspect that's further down the list of things that are important to the business right now.

Okay, I'll bite. @KatMcBundleFace How did ferrets get you in trouble? Did they call you a nazi for cheese?

So in a discussion about small furry animals causing upset I suggested maybe a woman had a ferret down her trousers. This didn't translate well into American and she reported me for threats of violence. She was a student at some college that focused on genocide and the holocaust, although her focus was on neither, obviously.

It was only a 12 hour ban but I refuse to give into American Cultural Imperialism. Long live the North!
My appeal seems to be glitched, as its still being reviewed from May.
I needed a break though. Do I miss my friends there.

I will die on the hill that alluding to a humorous Northern tradition is not a threat of violence. #ferretrightsnow

IcakethereforeIam · 07/11/2022 08:55

@KatMcBundleFace that is so stupid! I knew it would be something ridiculous. Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!

I wonder if 'yes because you were born female' would have been OK?

That's exactly the thought that came to me just a few minutes ago. The Tweeter used that term, "born female", so I wondered if, had I parroted that exact phrase, I would not be on a ban.

I am new to this "terfin" lark and am still rather naive about how to tiptoe through the tripwires!

I guess it must have been the person who said they were born female who reported me for "hateful conduct" for daring to suggest she is a woman?

I'd assume the original tweeter was fishing in hopes of catching GC responses. Might even be trying to gauge whether moderation policies have changed yet.

Oh gawd I am so naive. I thought it was a genuine question and I answered in an honest manner.
