UCL throws the dog a bone

University College London have launched a "gender expression" fund

www.ucl.ac.uk/news/2022/oct/ucl-launches-gender-expression-fund

Interestingly in the statement above they don't mention binders and packers,
yet the Students Union, who are giving out the grants, do!
"Grants can be used to purchase gender affirming products such as clothing, binders, packers and beauty products. Grants can also be used towards travel to medical or therapy/counselling appointments, but we are not able to provide funding for treatment or other medical procedures.

This is trust-based process based on self-declaration by the student, not investigation by the Union."
I hope lots of students go buy themselves a jumper.

Apparently UCL have upset their students somehow, and need to "rebuild trust" ......maybe it was hosting the Women's Place conference? Or possibly not hounding out professors for wrong think? 👇

Seyi Osibamowo, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Students’ Union UCL, says: “The establishment of this small grant fund to support the news of our trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming students is a step in the right direction to regain trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming students’ trust with the aim of fostering UCL as an inclusive safe space.”

To be fair to UCL they also talk about providing mixed and same sex toilets, which is a good thing.

The fund is part of a general hardship package. The packers, binders and skirts go spinny part.....

In all seriousness it is the duty of all GC students to do their best to get that cash in order to minimise the pontential harm that might be caused if the money were to end up in the hands of someone who wanted binders of Testosterone.

KatMcBundleFace · 27/10/2022 16:43

I mean, they've all got a valid gender expression!

When I was a student my gender was primarily expressed through the consumption of beer

and sometimes Malibu

extra spends for those gender affirming drinks would have been most welcome

KatMcBundleFace · 27/10/2022 17:16

The boys could have pints of gender affirming bitter.
The girls could have glasses of gender affirming babysham.

What's non binary gender affirming booze? Water just isn't going to cut it.

It’s part of a package of measures agreed with the LGBTQI reps after UCL declined to renew their Stonewall membership.
As pretty well everyone is non-binary, it is jumpers all round!

waterwitch · 27/10/2022 18:07

My gender identity is as a non-confirming UCL student (I just look like a mother based in Devon) Can I have money for a jumper?
Still, good they are no longer taking legal advice from Stonewall

user1494050295 · 27/10/2022 18:13

I hope this is widely publicised amongst their donor constituencies many of whom will do an about turn on their donations and go elsewhere

FunnyTalks · 27/10/2022 18:35

I express my gender non conformity through wearing men's trainers. They're really bloody expensive. If only I studied at UCL!

Circumferences · 27/10/2022 18:36

When I was a student I was a fully fledged cisgender woman under patriarchy who longed for big tits and a slim waist.

Could students like me use the grant for a boob job and liposuction? Or is it a discriminatory grant to help the gender expression of those who aren't expressing cisgender?

I think so, provided it's a fairly boxy fit

Justme56 · 27/10/2022 18:44

I never really understood packers. I don’t think I’ve ever met a man and looked at his crotch.

They are at it again.

Look if you want to find out about women and HIV then the easiest way is to ask women. Actual women.

Surely the experiences of transwomen in this context would be very different? Do research aimed at them.

And no one is assigned "intersex" at birth.

How did we let woowoo conquer science?

Why, you create a vegan and sober space, of course! (Haven't seen this on other threads yet but sorry if there is one)

Can we all identify as UCL students, despite not being students or in London?

Birdsweepsin · 29/11/2022 09:57

I believe its called Gender Fluid

I'd like to identify as a student for the discounts.

But I can't unless I have a student ID card from an educational institution in which I'm enrolled. That's disgracefully exclusionary.

Oh my god 🤣

Come to our vegan, sober, party and help celebrate persecuting and hounding a woman out of her job!

Someone needs to stage an intervention with these dreadful kiddos.

God this is the literal definition of spaffing money up a wall. If I were a student at UCL I'd be really pissed off that I could barely afford to eat and my tuition fees (which I was going to be financially indentured for life to repay) were being siphoned off to fund this shit. But that's based on my own experience of being a very broke student at uni and having been left with a massive student debt.

GCMM · 29/11/2022 13:47

University of Kent also does the same thing ie gives £100 to any student who claims they need it to affirm their gender. No questions asked, they don't want to know what the students spend it on, see receipts or anything. Maybe it's happening in lots of universities now?

JustWaking · 29/11/2022 16:04

That would be such an interesting psychology experiment! Does having taken the 30 pieces of silver actually make someone more likely to then identify as trans, as a way of protecting their ego from admitting they've committed an anti-social act (taking money not intended for them).

How could you know whether they took the money because they felt kinda-non-conforming already, or whether they changed their behaviour later to feel better about themselves.

Trans activists truly are Machiavellian

JustWaking · 29/11/2022 16:08

Or maybe I'm seeing more intelligence/intent than is really there.

A 'special people' fund also fits well with the 'give all the good stuff to me me me' attitude we see so often

Numsmetbunfight · 29/11/2022 16:11

I am a female who could do with a wardrobe update - reckon I could apply and spend it on the high street?

Musomama1 · 29/11/2022 16:11

Crikey, wish I'd had a student fund to pay for my ear piercings, hair dye and clothes, to affirm my identity as a goth.
