“The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women.

“But it’s not some obscene, uber Right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”

Yes, when I was younger I also believed TWAW. I accepted it when I was told a "woman's" brain could somehow grow in a man's body because of hormone washes in the womb, and that such people were really women in some essential way and lived very sadly until they had sex changes and were recognised as women This is a very honest and insightful post. Thank you!

It goes to the heart of what it is. Younger people are being told lies that cut across their very reality and identity. Strange times.

ralph speaks sense

lightlypoached · 25/10/2022 19:53

Smashing. More of this please

MangyInseam · 25/10/2022 20:23

It seems to me that it isn't the first time he's said something about this. But I don't think he goes around talking about it, it's a matter of being asked.

In any case, I'm not sure it's loyalty so much as he's extremely intelligent. If you've ever read about his family, they all seem to be very creative, outside the box, intellectual types.

He also doesn't seem to have any time for fools and can even be a bit of a jerk, which seems a common thing with people willing to say unpopular things.

Oh my god so he's hot and sensible. Crush increased 100%.

<sigh>

The teenage me would be horrified that 'sensible' is so close to 'hot' in my list of crush attributes.

Hot Nerds are a thing now. We're on trend.

Hilariously the above autocorrected to 'hot nerds are a little hung' so there's that.

DeoForty · 25/10/2022 20:43

There is a good interview on YouTube where he discusses this briefly, and talks about the war in Ukraine. He has a wonderful ability to ponder a situation outwardly but articulately.

DeoForty · 25/10/2022 20:51

Also, he hasn't been silent. I've seen him outwardly condemn JK's treatment on numerous occasions.

beastlyslumber · 25/10/2022 21:01

Slytherin ftw again. That sorting hat knew what it was doing after all.

Good. I hope that epitome of smugness Emma Watson pays attention, although I'm not holding my breath.

She is smug isn't she

Oh, I don't know...

Just in case the Telegraph decide to paywall it, Variety also covered it (though not as well/thoroughly).

It’s part of the reason #HarryPotter is currently trending on Twitter - though a main French TV channel showed the first film last night so there are LOTS of tweets from people about how it’s just as exciting watching it for the umpteenth time as it was seeing it the first time/seeing Hagrid now [ie after death of Robbie Coltrane] is heartbreaking & there’s some BTS fangirling going on as well. Interspersed with a mix of reactions to coverage of the story - some “excellent news!” type-responses; & then responses that accuse Rowling/both of violent transphobia/enact[ing] harm/supporting fascists/aligning with the far-right (anti-abortion movement).

FirstandLastBorn · 26/10/2022 05:34

My favourite #HarryPotter tweet is the top 25 ugly HP sweaters. #uglysweater. Classic. Needs more love.

FirstandLastBorn · 26/10/2022 05:41

BTW it's trending because it's the 20th anniversary of Chamber of Secrets film.

JellySaurus · 26/10/2022 08:30

Except with the Voldemort mask on, shudder

It's not a mask. His nose was digitally removed in post-production.

Birdsweepsin · 26/10/2022 08:35

Oo! It's in the Guardian too!

www.theguardian.com/film/2022/oct/25/ralph-fiennes-defends-jk-rowling

I have visions of hundreds of Guardian readers looking up and saying: JK Rowling getting abuse? When did that happen?

Beowulfa · 26/10/2022 08:58

Although he's had parts in household name franchises like Bond and Harry Potter, he seems mainly interested in lower budget arty projects. I doubt he cares much about being "cancelled" by the type of people who were never going to watch Coriolanus or The White Crow anyway. There's a certain intellectual freedom in doing low budget, low expectation work because it interests you.

Reminds me a bit of Kate Bush interviewed on Woman's Hour recently. The (breathlessly excited) interviewer said curiously "you're not on Twitter, are you Kate?" Kate laughed politely and said something like "oh no, that's not really me." Because she's Kate Bush FFS and doesn't need to talk about herself endlessly in exchange for pathetic needy pleb-likes. Because she's Kate Fucking Bush.

Just had another lovely fantasy thought- Sunday pub lunch with Kate and Ralph talking about Art And Books And Stuff.

"How unpleasant to imply that the younger generation are okay with rape and death rates"

I'm talking about the acceptance of transpeople, thank you.

I'm afraid my Ralph Fiennes fantasy is not nearly so cerebral.

:) I was 6 feet from him recently as he played Robert Moses in Straight Line Crazy at The Bridge. He is hot as hell, even while balding..Good to know he is brave too.

CAJIE · 10/03/2023 02:19
