Female High School volleyball athlete suffers serious head injury after transgender player throws abnormally fast ball

A North Carolina high school athlete has suffered a severe injury after a transgender player threw an “abnormally fast” ball at her head, newly released video footage shows.

The male opponent hurled the volleyball at approximately 70 mph, according to the Daily Mail. The female teammate at Hiwassee Dam High School experienced trauma to the head and neck, reportedly.

She is still recovering from long-term concussion symptoms, including problems with her vision. She has not yet been approved to compete again.

Hiwassee Dam will forfeit all games against the transgender player’s school, a decision made by the Cherokee County school board in a five to one vote.

“There is a competitive advantage and a safety concern for certain teams — it’s not the same for all teams,” the school board’s vice chair Jeff Martin said. “I can tell you that the board wasn’t searching out this kind of thing. It was brought to our attention based on safety concerns.”

WTF! What else will it take? At least they are forfeiting all games. Although they pussyfoot around the actual reason WHY there are safety concerns, they still make it pretty clear.

It’s just never going to end, is it? The next thing happens, and I think “Surely THIS is it? Right?” Are we confident this will stop even if a female dies?

That is so fucked up. Someone is going to have to die or be permanently disfigured before it will end I guess.

One of the comments on the Yahoo site made the point that in volleyball the nets are set lower for women (I have no idea if this is true) and this someone with the advantage of a male skeleton and centre of gravity would have a massive advantage playing in a women's comp. I did wonder about this because I wondered why this (really powerful and close-range shots that are difficult to deflect) did not happen more regularly in the men's comp.

The girl should sue. Women play with a lower net which means this biological male can actually hit the ball harder than if he were playing other biological males, because the angle he has to hit it at is a lot less shallow.

This is an absolute outrage.

Also, if I read it correctly, the team has now had to forfeit the remaining games of the season meaning that the girls are effectively punished.

Spartacus I read that as they are forfeiting the games against the team with the trans player - so making the point that they have serious safety concerns and won't put their players at risk.

Obviously it is frustrating that they have to sacrifice points in the league, but it sounds like the team managers are making as strong a statement as they possibly can about the situation. And are not forcing the team to "be kind".

Yes, nets are lower for women 2.24 m, rather than 2.43 m, mixed is usually played at 2.32 The few centimeters make a massive difference.
I used to play competitively at very high level (never internationally) and I have said before that, despite that Volleyball isn't a contact sport as such, it is bloody dangerous to play with males at the lower net. Balls come so much faster and in different angles than your are used to when playing against women. It's madness.

This exactly. I play a sport weekly which involves a ball and teams are mixed with an age range from 12 to 92. Men and older teen boys are explicitly told not to fire the ball in to the goal at 100mph when a female/younger teen girl or boy or the 80+ are in goal. It works. We have these rules to protect players and to not hurt each other

I think female competitors in any and every sport sport need to show solidarity and simply walk off the pitch / track en masse every time they are expected to compete against a trans woman.

I realise that it is hard in the U.S: women’s college fees can depend on their place on a team, and they are required to do as they are told. Which is why it has to be everyone, all together.

In case my username doesn’t make it bloody obvious I think this sort of thing should be banned. There was no reason for a male-bodied person to be playing in the female team other than vanity and unfair advantage for the rest of the team. Where was the duty of care to this poor young woman?

I just looked up the speed that a volleyball can reach. Some dumbwit commentator in the DM claims that based on his calculations it's maximum 50 mph. I knew that wasn't right so I googled. It seems top players (I assume they talk males here) average 121 mph in serves, and spikes can travel at about the same speed. For spikes it all about angles as well. Someone who can reach the ball much higher above the net can hit much more directly downwards. This is one reason why men play with a higher net, it would be carnage otherwise.
