Bit niche, but I expect there are a few other people around who are on an editorial board of an Elsevier journal and have just received the precall email to update your details? For the first time in my life, I think, I've gone so far as to refuse to answer a gender question and email to tell them why. Usually I manage to find a way to read the question that works for me, even if it requires some contortion, but this one gave no wriggle room. You have to identify with a gender, or have a gender identity you "prefer not to disclose".
Anyway, just sharing in the hope that others will be encouraged to not answer the question and to complain.
In the worst case, I suppose, I stop doing free work for one of the sector's least admired corporations, how terrible...
