New signage in Primark

I went into Primark today to do a bit of shopping.

There was a new sign outside of one of the two changing rooms which read (not verbatim, but as good as I remember):

'This changing room is for women. Changing rooms for other genders can be found upstairs'

I didn't want to take a photo of the sign as it was at the entrance to the changing room and obviously not appropriate.

A positive step forward from Primark. I wonder how they will define 'woman'.

I wonder how they will define 'woman'.

That is the key question and one they failed to answer when asked.

Other genders, hmm, why not the simple and straightforward SEX distinction that everyone understands and is perfectly legal in regard to the EqA.

VestofAbsurdity · 11/10/2022 16:10

Woman isn't a gender ffs, it's the term for an adult human female.

endofthelinefinally · 11/10/2022 16:10

They have already said there will be one gender neutral changing room and one changing room for people who identify as women/girls. So that is all perfectly fine now.

ReunitedThorns · 11/10/2022 17:16

If there's a changing room for women, where do the girls go?

Are girls a different gender to women?

pink85 · 12/10/2022 02:33

Told we can't refuse someone like we're not to judge whether someone should be using the womens changing rooms or not so basically its no safer we have to keep our mouths shut. Not a step forward really.

Yes but they allow you to self ID, so it is ingle gender but mixed sex, or it is mixed gender and mixed sex. Not really a choice.

Baldieheid · 12/10/2022 08:17

It means they still let penis havers in, as long as they say the magic words.

Make you feel sooooo much safer, huh?

FigRollsAlly · 12/10/2022 08:39

So nothing has changed.

Baldieheid · 12/10/2022 08:50

Not for women and girls no.

Wanderingowl · 12/10/2022 11:20

Even if it was a changing room for biological females only and another for everyone else, don't men and boys actually deserve their own space too? I know the very biggest issue is women's safety and we are more vulnerable than adult males. But the vast majority of men and teen boys, won't want to share with female bodied, demi-boys, etc, either.

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 11:22

Maybe it should be a changing room for those with a penis and one for those without? Just a massive no penis sign like the no smoking signs?

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 11:24

Though that wouldn't work for males who identify as female or the other way around I guess

CriticalCondition · 12/10/2022 12:39

On R4 You and Yours now. The retail expert seems to get it.

BUT, in all the talk of 'gender neutral' and 'unisex' changing rooms there was no mention of the elephant in the room ie whether a man who identifies as a woman would/should be allowed into women's changing rooms.

If only people talked about mixed sex then the confusion and obfuscation would not arise. But I suspect that a lot of it is deliberate.

The M&S in Brooklands has gender neutral changing rooms and loos.

Legally, one hopes.

You mean it means women and transwomen?

Edited

Exactly... (sarcasm). No single sex space for females.

Note that the OP is from 2022. I suspect things have changed since then with the supreme court judgement.
