Sheffield Central Labour Candidate - Abtisam Mohamed vs Eddie Izzard

If you are based in Sheffield please lend your support to Abtisam Mohamed a strong local woman candidate, a solicitor of Yemeni descent and longstanding Labour Councillor who has done valuable local work for the community including on nurseries. Sheffield Central is a safe Labour seat so whoever is selected is going to Parliament. Eddie Izzard has also launched a campaign but besides being a celebrity, has more glitz than steel, hasn't lived in Sheffield since being a student, plus as we all know is unclear about who they are.

Mohamed has an inspiring story, worked her way up to get a great career going and is focused on getting practical stuff done. She will make a great MP.

Abtisam Mohamed interview

Abtisam Mohamed Campaign page including a great video lots on her local concerns for the city:
abtisammohamed.com/

In contrast Izzard's campaign, getting loads of press coverage, is thin on detail:
www.eddieizzard.uk/

The local paper talked to people who questioned Izzard's chance of winning a few months back:

"In contrast, Jane Armstrong questioned her claim to run in the city.

She wrote: “I had heard this for a while and if she is fancying Central I know a lot of Labour members in that area who are really hostile to having her as a candidate. Not because she isn't nice person, but because people do not like celebrities being parachuted into wards above local candidates."

Apparently several other councillors may be standing as well so it should be an interesting contest.

I am not sure when the cut off point if you join Labour locally you will get to vote on who the candidate is. The actual contest has not yet begun yet but if I were local I would be signing up.

Sounds like Mike has the contacts to rustle up bums on seats for the vote?

That’s what it usually comes down to at these elections, women often lose out because other women find it harder to get to CLP meetings due to family commitments (and lefty men tend to chose other lefty men) - presume the vote is in-person, secret ballot?

My Labour MP has been in seat since before I joined/lived here, so I’ve only ever voted on cllr selections and internal party positions.

Boomboom22 · 12/10/2022 14:36

It would be awful for the whole country if EI got in, an absolute joke. He's always been me, me, me. His whole act was about how selfish he is and labour seem to think it's OK to be associated with this. Labour need some decent new entries not joke candidates.

NCFT0922 · 12/10/2022 14:40

@NotNowFGS majority now would fall under Sheffield central.

goldfinchonthelawn · 12/10/2022 14:43

I think Eddie Izzard is the most fame hungry celeb ever. He makes David Walliams look shy.

ValerieDoonican · 12/10/2022 22:34

I was thinking about this this evening, and why it annoyed me so much. I realised that like so many people who share EI's -bum - journey, Eddie is mainly interested in Eddie, talks about Eddie, promotes Eddie, assumes we are interested, and is blithely convinced that whatever happens to suit Eddie, is automatically good for everyone.

This is tiresome in a 'sleb' but can be ignored with an eyeroll. It's completely the wrong set of priorities for an MP who is representing and serving 10s of 1000s of other people. It seems to me Eddie is all about the fantasy of standing up in the green benches and the attention, and I suspect, would struggle to focus on the real, dull, ordinary, difficult, tedious, unglamorous problems of actual Sheffield people.

Clearly there are many politicians who are similar - BJ and Truss spring to mind and from the past, Alan Clark was an obvious offender ("What shall I wear to my first cabinet meeting?" or whatever it was!) Labour has its share as well. They're all terrible. Someone as interested in themself as EI is, is wholly unsuited to be an MP, IMO.

ValerieDoonican · 12/10/2022 22:35

OMIGOD that typo there. I did not mean to write bum journey!!! it was meant to read "um" - journey. ogodogodogdod

Izzard stands against a muslim woman active in the community, who's worked with excluded kids etc.

He's repugnant.

colouringindoors · 12/10/2022 22:50

Saw an excellent video interview of two female Iranian activists. Asked by presenter if wearing a hijab could be empowering as some in West think. They looked at him like he'd grown horns. And replied immediately saying it's repressive.

colouringindoors · 12/10/2022 22:53

BlackForestCake · 12/10/2022 10:25

This is nuts. Dozens of misogynist Greens are saying they will campaign against the Green candidate and for Izzard. All the left and environmental policies don't matter a jot. They'll support a Blairite who's "trans inclusive" over their own party. They don't care about anything else. (Just search Sheffield Green Party on Twitter for this)

FFS! So much for saving the planet!

Wafflesnsniffles · 12/10/2022 23:09

Seeing this headline made me want to move back to Sheffield just so that I could vote for whoever is standing opposite him.

Well, I am sure that twitterengineer will come back and tell us whether or not they think 7 year old girls should have any choice about wearing it AND whether a group of males should be treated differently for safeguarding and, indeed, investigations into sexual assaults and rape claims.

Because that is what twiterengineer is calling Islamophobic and vilifying Kellie Jay Keen for saying should not happen.

Almost like some posters take their view from accusations from twitter without actually looking at what those accusations are based on.

Almost like some posters take every opportunity to shame non-conforming women who don’t agree with them and just repeat old trope to do so, while never genuinely engaging in topics. Just plop, admonish, demonise, denigrate and run.

Whatever could motivate that? Well, misogyny seems to continue to be very prevalent whatever the gender identity a male identifies as.

fromorbit · 13/10/2022 10:03

Abtisam Mohamed spoke at a demo in support of the revolution against the Iranian state a few days ago:

"I spoke today in solidarity with the Iranian people in their struggle against the oppressive regime.
Women should be able to choose what they wear, wherever they live.
My sisters, in Iran we stand with you. We are on the same side, the side that demands freedom."

twitter.com/Abtisam_Mohamed/status/1579195629691351040

Abtisam Mohamed on one of her best achievements:
"Last week, I went to visit the nursery I helped to establish, Fir Vale Children’s Centre. The centre is a charity providing essential early years and childcare services to a deprived area."
twitter.com/Abtisam_Mohamed/status/1579474819292499969

KJK has thrown her support behind Abtisam Mohamed:

"Let me just assure each and everyone one of you, if this young woman gets the seat, than there is no place for me in Sheffield. Absolutely no way and no reason for us (SFW - Standing for Women) to get involved"

Women should be able to choose what they wear, wherever they live.

Abtisam Mohamed sounds like she should be the right candidate for Sheffield.

However, tell us @SecretTransTwitterEngineer . She has state the above, which echoes KJK making comment about primary school girls and their attire.

Maybe, just maybe this once you will come back and explain just what KJK said that is islamophobic in your eyes and why this statement above is different?

Or really, were you just referring to the comment that really was about never allowing any male to escape scrutiny for their actions regardless of who they are. And why does the nature of that comment rankle so much in that case?

I think you should be able to explain your accusations about a potential candidate for a future election in Sheffield, don’t you? Pretty serious accusations you are making about KJK.

Helleofabore · 13/10/2022 10:34

"Let me just assure each and everyone one of you, if this young woman gets the seat, than there is no place for me in Sheffield. Absolutely no way and no reason for us (SFW - Standing for Women) to get involved"

I really hope that Abtisam is selected.

I am sure there are plenty of other high profile electorates that need attention by SFW. And there is nothing to stop SFW from raising awareness there, in Sheffield, any time.

I would never vote for a parachuted in candidate. And no way is ‘going to uni there’ a strong enough connection. Who ever thinks that is a good enough reason is doing a massive disservice to Sheffield and any other electorate where this happens.

BloodyHellKen · 13/10/2022 12:52

I've only just heard about EI's candidacy in Sheffield. Just when you think the Labour party can't become anymore unappealing they wheel out this wittering self absorbed fool. It's as if they want to repel voters.

Keir FFS, enough of this posturing gender nonsense. Get your party in order, move away from the TRAs and become a good, respected political party again rather than the shambolic embarrassment you are now.

The vast majority of voters you are chasing are NOT interested in gender ideology, let alone believe in it.

BrokenFridgeDrawer · 13/10/2022 13:48

I hope that Eddie Izzard is selected.

This is a PERFECT opportunity for SUNSHINE, huge glorious sunshine.

The vast majority of folk in the real world and in real life have simply not been peaked yet.

When I first became aware of this issue and the ideology and terminology and everything else, it actually took a couple of years of wondering, before I got it.

Some may know Izzard vaugley as a Transvestite, with no publicised Transexual surgery, yet here he is as a Transwoman, or actually a Woman, being addressed as She and Her, wearing dresses and using women's toillets.

The man of the Sheffield Omnibus is going to be presented with this, and some folk are going to start pointing out that the Emporer is wearing no clothes.

And who better than an arrogant, narcissistic, entitled luvvie.

IZZARD IS PERFECT !

He will do the work of Lia Thomas and Emily Bridges x 10

That is a VERY good point 😀

TheClogLady · 13/10/2022 14:06

I wonder if Izzard has a back up plan for trying again in other seat selections if Sheffield Central doesn’t pan out?

It’s not as if he lives in Sheffield/near to Sheffield/actively wants to live in Sheffield or has a particular interest in the well-being of Sheffield’s residents

(unlike the other candidates)

Parachutees often bounce around a few areas before they get one that sticks (or stand in a no-hope constituency to show willing before being seriously considered for a safe seat elsewhere).

Of course, most seat selections are very low key, barely noticed beyond the CLP meeting. If Eddie loses this one in a very public way, Eddie might not want to risk a second public rejection in quick succession.

Would be interesting if Eddie lost this one and stood elsewhere. Eddie strikes me as the sort of person who turns the coffee table over after losing at Monopoly…

BrokenFridgeDrawer · 13/10/2022 14:22

Another reason Izzard is perfect.

Any random man in a dress, bad fitting wig and lippy will HAVE to be accepted by the public. They will wear the Trans Cloak of Invisibility. " How dare you ask about my private life, it is a personal matter ". Their " transness " will be INVINCIBLE. The nature of their " transition " will be verboten and unquestionable. The public will know nothing about their past life, and will simply have to accept a " woman ".

By contrast, Izzard has had a highly public profile over decades. He is onl record as switching between " Boy Mode " and " Girl Mode "

He has given countess interviuews and media appearances.

The public can not be forced to accept him as a " woman ", and he will not have an invincibility shield over the nature of his " transition ".

Some people will see a bloke in a dress, and the idea of years of therabpy and dreadful surgery, will be replaced by the knowledge all one has to do is click their heels together.

Izzard will be taken to task on his womenness. He won't have the Jamie Wallis sheild of untouchableness.

His previous interviews and media profile will give enough rope to hang himself.;

IZZARD FOR SHEFFIELD !

He is going to do us all a favour ! See it for what it is and can be.

The one local official that members who go to meetings will tend to know. Rather more useful than Russell Crowe in a local Labour party contest.
