Of course it is - for both the vulnerable prisoners and for the prison staff who have a responsibility to them.

I don't know what possesses any judge to place gender identity above sexual reality - particularly where violent sexual offenders are involved.

It must be a nightmare for everyone involved in the prison system.

It must be a nightmare for everyone involved in the prison system.

Heather Mason, a former prisoner in Canada, is one of the bigger voices on this - in part because problem is particularly advanced there.

In case you didn't see it, check out this panel event where she speaks - some unbelievable stories from their prison system:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4644271-amy-hamm-kim-jones-heather-mason-jenn-smith

(Well, unbelievable if you haven't been following this for 5 years and hence understand how stupid people are prepared to be if everyone around them is being stupid.)

Thank you @NecessaryScene - I'll have a look at that.

The article is from Feb 2020. She spoke at the women's rally in Edinburgh last Thursday, she's another fab woman

JacquelinePot · 09/10/2022 17:36

Filing this under "well, duh"

ArabellaScott · 09/10/2022 17:48

I have it in under 'No shit, Sherlock'.

It’s great to see this on the BBC though. It’s a sign that Stonewall’s grip is lessening.

Rhona is awesome.

And is the instigator of a memorable ‘burn’ on twitter.

One of the Speakers at let awoken Speak was a UK ex prisoner her speech is well worth listening to. Part 2 she is wearing thought criminal t shirt. At about 4 mins 38 seconds

DameMaud · 09/10/2022 22:30

Has anyone got links to the FWS speeches? I can't find them on YouTube/the website?

FemaleAndLearning · 09/10/2022 22:43

Maybe they are not up yet. GSpellchecker on twitter was filming the For Women Scotland event and said they would be on you tube soon.

DameMaud · 09/10/2022 22:59

Ok. Thanks @FemaleAndLearning . I expect it'll pop up on here when they're released.

puffyisgood · 09/10/2022 23:34

it'd always be an issue to have men who very sincerely identify as women, probably even the small subset of these who've had 'bottom surgery', into a women's prison.

but to allow self-declaration into women's prison by any criminal (which of course all prison inmates unfortunately are), given how violent and unpleasant men's prisons are, is really beyond parody.

Mine just has a picture of eyes, rolling . . .

JanieAllen · 10/10/2022 11:27

Please lets have less of the discussion of trutrans... the numbers who have bottom surgery are minescule and this does nothing to ameliorate that someone bigger heavier and stronger is been put into a women's prison. And we know thats dangerous from having men in women's spaces. What ever surgery they have they are men.

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/10/2022 13:28

Hear, hear @JanieAllen

Male born people - no matter how much they want to be female, how much they think of themselves as female, how much they superficially may appear to be female, or how much they medicate or surgically alter their bodies, - have no place in women's spaces.

They are male. If they commit an imprisonable offence then they should be imprisoned in the male estate

What is it they say? - "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime."

Can I highlight here that Keep Prisons Single Sex are fundraising at the minute? If crowdfunder were searched for the words "fighting on for women in prison" that would locate it. If anybody feels like, you know, digging a little.

Today Brandon Lewis announced that policy on prison placements (in England and Wales - Scotland has its own system) will be revised before the end of the year. Kate Coleman at KPSS has tweeted about this announcement twitter.com/NoXYinXXprisons/status/1579895450215538688 - as you can see, still much to work on.

The KPSS team have achieved such a lot in terms of raising the profile on this - stuff in the House of Lords, getting Lewis even this far - if anybody can help the campaign a little it will be much appreciated I'm sure.

(I'm not directly involved in KPSS at all, but I did once fangirl Kate C in truly embarrassing fashion at a meeting we both ended up at ...)
