The first thread, towards the end of which there was a discussion about having a second thread but it wasn't added:

Mermaids being investigated by the charity commission
http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4644323-mermaids-being-investigated-by-the-charity-commissionn_

There's been a new development so maybe a second thread would be useful:

Lottery pauses trans charity cash during investigation

Meanwhile another trustee appears to have doubled down on queer theory...

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11293125/Biological-sex-just-concept-says-trustee-trans-charity-Mermaids.html

NHS doctor and trustee of controversial Mermaids charity sparks fresh trans row after describing biological sex as a 'concept' - as furious campaigners hit back: 'It's a fact of nature... every human being is either male or female

Mermaids have apparently declined to comment on these latest comments by this other trustee.

The woman appears to be a moron!

Dr McDowell, who used to be a primary school governor, added: 'Even if you think that sex is a very simple and immutable thing, to say that should then determine exactly how you behave in society and what roles you should play, I mean God, it's not the 1930s is it? It's really problematic.'

That's not what GC people say at all.

RedToothBrush · 07/10/2022 22:58

On Dr Katie McDowell
The medic also accused the UK's 'very active gender critical movement' – those who maintain biological sex cannot be changed – of being 'very, very anti-trans and spearheading this horrendous attack on trans human rights'

And
Speaking generally about their medical work, Dr McDowell described preferring working in a post-natal ward treating newborn children to looking after adults, who could sometimes make 'bad decisions'.

And
After the story broke, Dr McDowell tweeted praise for a 'fab article', which described Mermaids advice on breast binding as a 'beacon of light'.

nothing to see here either...

... Only a doctor...

IcakethereforeIam · 07/10/2022 23:01

I bet Mermaids wish she'd button it.

So we now know two trustees.

One has glue for a brain and thinks adults make bad decisions (and presumably thinks kids make better ones) and prefers to treat newborns (who presumably need her to make wise decisions on their behalf)
The other hung out with paedos and sounds very suspiciously like a paedo himself.

Sounds like kids have been very safe hands there.

Some great transparency going on there.

This person is a paediatrician but doesn't see how biology may be more than a concept:

"The medic said: 'Even biological sex as a concept is not as simple as it's made out to be, right?
'Because what do you mean by that? Do you mean chromosomes? Do you mean hormone levels? Do you mean genitals? Everybody is obsessed with genitals.
'Does it mean… what you look like? Because you know obviously you can have tall women, you can have very short men.
'So I think even biological sex, which is what the gender critical people are obsessed with, is not as simple as it's made out to be.'"

They sound the very best person to have oversight on safeguarding and good governance and being on the look out for paedos don't they?

ResisterRex · 07/10/2022 23:16

I feel like we're at the top of a rollercoaster but have no idea how far down we are going to go before we (hopefully) come back up again.

Fuck me dead. This person has a medical degree?

Yes. Yes it is. There are variations but sex not a spectrum.

Having read some of the excellent links above, I’m horrified. I’ve long heard of paedophile rings but I didn’t expect them to be in such plain sight and in what are likely to be highly paid (and cushy) academic positions. WTAF is going on…?

BitossiBlues · 07/10/2022 23:24

This is just extraordinary. I mean, we hoped and prayed that people would see through the Mermaids smoke and mirrors, but could anyone have predicted this level of self destruction, and these revelations of their blatant disregard for child safety? I thought when the time came, the GC movement would have to patiently explain to the public their problematic nature. Turns out they are an open sewer that anyone can smell. And all this sunlight resulting from their own petty and vindictive action against LGB Alliance makes it all the more satisfying. These arrogant bastards thought they were untouchable. They truly believed they were a sacred caste.

I hope this is the beginning of the end of Jolyon Maugham. The GLP has lost another JR case today against Matt Hancock. He needs to fuck off back to helping the wealthy avoid paying tax, and leave public law issues to lawyers who know what they're doing.

Next up, Emma Watson et al.

RedToothBrush · 07/10/2022 23:26

I have a feeling that the DM are busy going through trustees social media accounts.

Katie McDowell's twitter is now locked. So is their LinkedIn.

I suspect the DM have gone through the lot already by now...

Wonder what else they found.

How much panic do you think is going on at Mermaids HQ?

How many tears at this new 'targeted harassment' (aka media doing standard and frankly needed background checks on a charity who appointed a paedo's mate) do we think this will generate?

All this fucking shit comes from academia. It starts off as an incomprehensible course on gender studies (or critical race theory or some such other bullshit grievance study that has no basis in material reality) and trickles down into the lives of the normies via a captured civil service and clueless, cynical corporates ready to jump on the next bandwagon. The damage these people have done is mind blowing.

ResisterRex · 07/10/2022 23:31

I have a feeling that the DM are busy going through trustees social media accounts.

I'd imagine the journalists (DM, TG, TT at least) doing the digging already dug, some time ago. Wasn't the full list of Mermaids-affiliated people, available in July? Or the summer at some point. It's a fair amount of time to have had, to search and go through what's in the public domain.

Whatever mumsnetters have been able to find eg that photo surely can't be all of it.

It feels like Mermaids are in that situation where something is revealed but that's not the full story because the press keep coming back with a new revelation each time.

Timing is also rather unfortunate for nicola isn't it?

Gosh it's almost like the warning signs about removing boundaries have been there years, isn't it? As if NS could've known.

How does she think the babies are made?
What about all those growth charts, pink and blue for girls and boys?
It's bloody terrifying to think your child's life could be in the hands of a person like this.

Dreikanter · 07/10/2022 23:37

Nicola didn’t cover herself in glory on R4 this morning.

NecessaryScene · 07/10/2022 23:53

the press keep coming back with a new revelation each time.

This does make a bit of a refreshing change, though, doesn't it?

The mainstream press actually doing research and telling us something we didn't know.

We've had years of the press ignoring us; then we had the press maybe reporting something we knew years ago; and earlier this year we had the press effectively doing "yesterday on Mumsnet" pieces.

And now, finally, they're actually doing their own investigation!

I'm so proud of them.

NecessaryScene · 07/10/2022 23:56

I'm so proud of them.

But the important point is - Mermaids has been able to withstand a lot of amateur women (and men) ferreting around as best they can in fora like this for quite a while.

But how long can they withstand a pack of competitive professional journalists from multiple publications scenting blood?

It's a whole new game.

Dreikanter · 07/10/2022 23:58

Would be good if the Grauniad could take its head out of the fucking sand for at least long enough to read the room.

Dreikanter · 08/10/2022 00:01

Would it be too much to hope that Amelia Gentleman is ferreting away on the back of covering Mermaids v LGBA?

TheBiologyStupid · 08/10/2022 00:57

Absolutely.
