This article. Utterly insightful about everything. Wish every bloody school leader in the country had to read it. I am not at all right-wing, quite the reverse. But this makes an awful lot of sense. I hate the fact that the opinions of GC feminists get dismissed as load of reactionary old claptrap and bigotry from women too old to understand. We understand only too well. Even my 17 year old son can see it now!

Wow, that really is a corker.

Biscuitsneeded · 05/10/2022 21:15

Isn't it? She has the whole sorry cult absolutely nailed.

She breaks that down very nicely. Good article, thanks.

Igmum · 05/10/2022 21:47

Absolutely bloody spot on. Thanks for sharing OP, that's a great article

MsRosley · 05/10/2022 21:52

Bravo, Victoria!

LoobiJee · 05/10/2022 21:52

Am I right in remembering that Victoria Smith has a history of anorexia/ eating disorder? So she’s coming from a place of understanding and empathy with adolescent experience of distress with their bodies.

Hence why that article is so thoughtful, insightful and, well, properly kind to the adolescents themselves.

or am I mixing her up with another talented writer with that experience?

FunnyTalks · 05/10/2022 22:12

No, you're spot on, loobi

She's been writing amazing feminist blogs and articles for years now. I love the clarity of her thought and the links she makes.

Thanks for being better at remembering than me! I tried finding the blog of hers I was thinking of but couldn’t find it. It was really insightful on eating disorders.

and has she got a book coming out next Spring - about misogyny against older women, I think? Again I might be mixing her up with someone else.

LoobiJee · 05/10/2022 22:40

I particularly liked her point that you can have a perfectly mundane, middle class, privileged life and still be tortured by (perfectly normal and understandable) adolescent anxiety and distress caused by puberty.

The disgraceful thing, of course, is cynical adults monetising that distress.

GrabbyGabby · 05/10/2022 22:45

Wow, that is blistering, and so true. The heightened sense of persecution isn't a side effect of their ramblings, it is the main game, keep the kids anxious and in thrall. It is so so so fucked up it gives me the rage daily.

GrinitchSpinach · 05/10/2022 23:05

It’s interesting, isn’t it, how many prominent women speaking up for distressed adolescent girls have detailed their own histories of anorexia? Off the top of my head, Hadley Freeman and Kara Dansky have drawn this connection. I am sure there are more.

Carlycat · 05/10/2022 23:30

She's fairly active on Twitter 👌

Biscuitsneeded · 06/10/2022 05:53

I have thought for a while that trans is the new eating disorder. Dangerous, insidious, exacerbated by pressure from the Internet etc. The difference is we aren't all being urged to celebrate and enable eating disorders.

Yes, to be called "Hags: The Demonization of Middle-Aged Women." I have preordered!

GrinitchSpinach · 06/10/2022 21:50

Oops, my US autocorrect changed the "s" I typed to a "z." Sorry!

Is she Glosswitch? That VS?

GrinitchSpinach · 07/10/2022 22:32

Yes, she is Glosswitch. I enjoy her tweets as much as her longer-format writing.

CircleofWillis · 08/10/2022 05:16

Thank you! Great article! It was crisp and clear, like vinegar cutting through an oil slick.
