Bearded men and Twitter

I'm not on Twitter so can never comment (probably just as well) but do browse.

But I do wonder why some men are allowed to be misogynistic bullies to woman and never get sactioned for it.

I am not talking about the odd nasty comment. I am talking about the deliberate targeting of a female and going after them time and time again. It's obsessive, it's terrifying and dangerous. Yet women get their accounts shut down for misgendering.

There is one creep just now who has way over stepped the line. I don't know why the women doesn't block him, but she is a strong character. But I think it is getting to the point where she could go to the police and perhaps needs to think about increasing the security around her.

Why is he allowed to do this? Why do those in the TRA community not call him out?

Is she not a person because she believes that males shouldn't undress beside teenage girls and women?

These are supposedly the people on the right side.

Probably completely pointless post, but I am shocked and disgusted this weekend at what Twitter allows.

Twitter has turned into a really nasty place.

This. There's awful people on both sides of the debate.

BAMO.

ellyoctober · 02/10/2022 10:16

What is BAMO?

Yes twitter is a cesspit with biased moderation.

GroggyLegs · 02/10/2022 10:17

Twitter is a pit.

I was active on there for a while but as someone who tries (not always successfully) to think before I post, being deliberately misconstrued, my words twisted and slurs directed at me for quite mild GC views, upset me.

That's the point of twitter though isn't it. Silencing moderate views and amplifying extreme ones.

Where do beards come into it?

Many of the men who hate woman the most seem to have beards.

They are also the ones who regularly say TWAW and women need to accept them in our spaces

Not sure why that is, but there does seem to be a pattern. Now I am sure for every misogynistic bearded male there are many more kind and respectful males but there is a definite trend.

Few people would post on Twitter about this issue or even want to spend time there unless they were comfortable with getting into arguments about it so yes, it skews aggressive.

That's true. I closed down my account in 2020 before I had even visited this board because it was such a horrible place. Although I do remember seeing the word 'cis' and having to Google it and thinking I am not 'cis'.

I browse it because it is the best place to keep up to date with what is happening.

There is a lot of nastiness from both sides, but I would say the majority of that is from males (and I include transwoman in that).

In this occasion I guess he continues to do it because she hasn’t blocked him. Most online drama can be solved by a simple click of a block button…. But no one seems to do that.

In this instance I'm not sure. He still goes after a dead woman almost daily.

It doesn’t seem surprising to me that men who hate women would be more likely to adopt a visual symbol of masculinity.
Obviously beards like anything else can stand for different things and have done in different places and at different points in history but they have often stood for patriarchal authority. A British Indian colleague of mine used to to refer to the older men in his community who wanted him to have an arranged marriage as ‘the beards’. In nineteenth century England beards come back into fashion at a point when masculine-feminine differences are being re-emphasised in other ways culturally and socially.

Mollyollydolly · 02/10/2022 11:45

There are some people you just shouldn't engage with. We amplify their dreadful voices. If women didn't react they'd have hardly any engagement. They get off on it, the block button is your friend. They enjoy abusing women.

Huh, I'm the most gender critical men I know, suppose I'd better shave my beard off

No, as has been pointed out upthread, not all men and not all beards.

It seems to be a trend.

trend
noun
a general tendency

Hopefully her loved ones have enough sense to block him. I’m sure they have been through enough.

Justme56 · 02/10/2022 14:15

If you look at any of the statistics about Twitter usage you can see it is very much male dominated. The biggest majority are aged 24-35 (may explain the beards as they seem quite fashionable) and what is surprising is that around 90% of tweets are from 10% of users. It is apparent that there are some men, who for a variety of reasons (possibly their own inadequacies) despise women. It can be a very toxic place.

Aroundtheriverbend · 02/10/2022 14:23

A.C.? In that case, I fully agree it is shocking how individual women can be targetted and fixated on.

PatSharpsMullet · 02/10/2022 18:56

Who is AC?

I can only think of Alistair Campbell....and Aaron Carter 😅🤷🏽‍♀️
