Neo/pronouns

I am currently studying part time. The course organiser is trans non binary. I have always felt uncertain by this person. Digged deep to see whether it's a prejudice, but they trigger a nervous system response which screams inwardly ‘dont trust’. Last year - they were they/them. This year per/pers. I can't decide whether it's to keep us on our toes owing to what I'm studying or if it reflects a genuine choice. If both are non binary why change? I've been informed by someone else it's a case of what feels right for them. My heads in a bit of a spin with it.

Have they done anything to make you feel uneasy?
Or is it just the fact they are trans/non binary that made you feel that way?
Them not using pronouns you approve of shouldn't be a reason not to trust them

Sparklybutold · 28/09/2022 23:40

@ToGanymedeAndTitan
Pers have down things that have seriously harmed and people, including myself. I'm not sure per understands the depth of this either. Pers stance on diversity etc is refreshing and interesting but despite wanting to like pers, per previous actions have seriously hampered this.

@ToGanymedeAndTitan there is a general feeling he's has a group pers likes and a group per does not - this being middle age white women.

Manchestermummax3 · 28/09/2022 23:43

What on earth is per??

Sparklybutold · 28/09/2022 23:44

@ToGanymedeAndTitan I sense a quiet anger and I actually feel pers is quite dangerous. It is ironic owing to pers specialty because per has implemented pers power in a way which has harmed women.

Neo pronoun

OP posts:
Keroppi · 28/09/2022 23:44

Seriously harmed how? Just don't interact with them, er, perm .. ?!

Sparklybutold · 28/09/2022 23:45

@Keroppi

Trying out the requested neo pronoun here as this is how I will be expected to refer to per moving forward.

I have little choice in not interacted with per.

OP posts:
sunshineandstrawberryjam · 28/09/2022 23:46

Well, what has pers actually done?

Keroppi · 28/09/2022 23:47

I think like most people, even people within the ~trans umbrella~, think neopronouns are dumb. If it's your course organiser and you get bad vibes, then there's unfortunately nothing to do in this current climate than avoid social situations, use their name instead of pronouns where possible and finish your degree asap. In my opinion.

Sparklybutold · 28/09/2022 23:51

@sunshineandstrawberryjam it would be unwise to give details on a public forum but student union and student support have gotten involved. I have tried to encourage others to do the same but they are afraid of the impact it mqu have on them.ckmlleting there qualification.

@Keroppi

Sadly, head down and toe the line is the approach I need to take.

"Trans non binary" isn't a thing because they can't both exist in one person. Trans simply implies from one to an/the other, whilst NB is neither one nor the other.

Per/pers is just attention seeking nonsense. It's utterly meaningless.

I couldn't play along with that charade.

Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:11

@NyanBinaryJohn

My transgender non binary lecturer would disagree with you.

OP posts:
Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:13

@NyanBinaryJohn

I will be trying to refer to per by name as much as I can. All last year everyone was being corrected to they or them and now people will be corrected again. Part of me does feel likes it's attention seeking bullcrap then the other part of me wants to understand .

OP posts:
BlackForestCake · 29/09/2022 00:21

What is there to understand? He or she gets a kick from forcing others to pretend they don't know full well what sex he or she is. You are not obliged to participate in this nonsense.

Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:25

@BlackForestCake

Part of me thinks this then another part of wonders what if?

I did just find this which I thought was interesting and it's insight in more neuro diverse people using neopronouns. Interesting as I know there been emerging evidence of higher prevalence of neuro divergency especially amongst transmen.

If someone asked me to refer to them as pers I would laugh in his/her face. Just would not be happening.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/09/2022 00:29

Part of me does feel likes it's attention seeking bullcrap then the other part of me wants to understand .

The second part of you just needs to listen to the first part of you.

Pronouns are to make communication easier and more fluid. 'Neopronouns' don't do this, they're basically like nicknames with the added complication of different parts of speech. They make communication harder, not easier.

Just use this tedious persons name, and of course 'you' should be ok if you're directly talking to someone.

Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:30

@DontTouchThat if I did that it's likely my ass would be hauled into a disciplinary for discrimination

PaterPower · 29/09/2022 00:35

Tell the idiot that your pronouns are now Donkey / Kong or Itchy / Foot or something similarly banal and that you expect to be referred as those at all times or you’ll be lodging a grievance.

Once the gormless attention seeker has got used to calling you that, switch to something different but equally ridiculous. Wash and repeat until ‘per’ gets the message.

We’re in the mess we’re in now because we’ve (collectively) indulged pricks like your lecturer in their bid to be ‘speshul’

Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:35

The problem is i partly exist in a world which is very central in terms of these issues with the course organiser recently being promoted. Let's call them Sam. Sam has a lot of power and I think the uni would be extremely wary of rocking that boat, especially considering the shitstorm that has occurred when other people from other unis have tried to contest.

PorkPieAndAPickledOnion · 29/09/2022 00:39

OP, you’ve started two threads tonight about neo pronouns; in one you refer to your colleague, and in this one a course leader, both having moved to this new per/pers combination. It seems a bit unlikely to me. You’ve also posted a link to the same press article on both threads. Do you have a particular agenda here? Do you want to say more about that?

PaterPower · 29/09/2022 00:40

I’d bet good money that neither Sam nor your lecturer would be employable, leave alone be considered for promotion, outside of the world of education.

Is the course you’re doing of any actual value outside of academia? Why have you chosen to spend good money on whatever gender woo course you’re pursuing? Was there nothing useful you were interested in studying?

Sparklybutold · 29/09/2022 00:43

@PorkPieAndAPickledOnion

What are you applying exactly?

Lecturer/colleague used interchangeably owing to the nature of my training
