Do I now need to boycott Wagamama

I like Wagamama. However I spotted this in a DM article about Mermaids today.

"Meanwhile, Wagamama is currently running a similar fundraiser, according to its website which states 25p from every power juice sold will be donated to Mermaids along with 20 per cent of its profits from their bespoke menu."

Why are firms getting into this agree with our politics if you want to buy our services thing. There is no way I want to buy anything that leads to a donation to Mermaids. Wagamama please reconsider.

I didn't know this, Shane, we liked their food.

Teamsaction · 27/09/2022 19:57

I also love the noodles but am not going again.

Chillisquid · 27/09/2022 20:22

I used to work for wagamama.
I can tell you they hired a non binary diversity and inclusion manager about 18 months ago.
They asked all staff if they wanted pronoun badges and pride lanyards about 6months ago.
Then 'proud beyond pride' was when the supporting mermaids started, must have been in July.
They've partnered with gendered intelligence before also.
Thank god I left when I did because I couldn't have worked for them supporting mermaids.
Of all the charities in the world I don't know why any decent brand would touch that toxic mess with a bargepole.

Banana2079 · 27/09/2022 20:23

Terrible food anyway

Chillisquid · 27/09/2022 20:26

The CEO email address is [email protected].

AffronttoBS · 27/09/2022 20:29

I have stopped going to Wagamama for a few years. We go to Pho instead whenever we are shopp8ng in reading or Oxford.

MrsMitford3 · 27/09/2022 20:29

Well I'm out too.

it has to be corruption because surely no business is that tone deaf

Chillisquid · 27/09/2022 20:30

Inclusion and wellbeing partner [email protected]
Think this is the non binary man who had to do the obligatory making womens day all about trans women on the company Facebook group.

AffronttoBS · 27/09/2022 20:31

But lots of diversity and inclusion managers within companies are just woke and ignorant.

userlotsanumbers · 27/09/2022 20:36

FFS. I can barely eat anywhere because of my raging IBS, but yeah, another one bites the dust. Never again, and this was one place I could actually eat at.
Looking like a blessing in disguise that the rising prices make it impossible to eat out over the next few years then, eh? Every cloud and that.

Exhaustedmoose · 27/09/2022 20:38

Ffs wagadicks

DialSquare · 27/09/2022 20:39

Will they be changing their name to Wagaperson?

ArabellaScott · 27/09/2022 21:30

Wagabirthingperson

Needmoresleep · 28/09/2022 11:46

Wagacervixhaver...

Has a certain ring to it. (Or Wagacismama?)

I tried to complain but they make it complicated. No obvious email address and you need to list a branch and time. No option to make a complaint about their corporate policy. Wagamama is a go to place when I am in a strange town and want something reliable, so I don't really have a local branch.

Anyway this is the generic first response:

"we are looking into your feedback now and we will get back to you with a more personal response. we’ll be sure to address your concerns, answer your questions or thank you for any positive comments you may have left, and your feedback will also be used to make sure we’re improving on everything we offer you and all our customers"

Lets hope they genuinely want to improve service to ALL their customers. A family orientated chain donating to Mermaids is obscene.

Wagadick for male customers, I expect.

We used to go to Wagamama monthly but haven't been for some time because my family care about the safety of children.

I think we need to TELL businesses this sort of thing: an email saying "I used to spend £100 a month regularly at your restaurant in X [town]. Since your policy to supply binders to underage girls, my family will be spending our money elsewhere."

RentingIsTheWayToHumpf · 28/09/2022 12:30

😂😂

We enjoy food at Wagamamas but will give it a miss now. Can anyone engage with them on Twitter and challenge?

They are hiring LGBT inclusion mangers everywhere. Diversity and inclusion is high on the agenda of every organisation and large business in this country. Recruitment is currently not merit based, it's ideology driven.

thefartingfish · 28/09/2022 12:35

Ffs only a man (binary/non binary/has a penis person) could possibly think this is a good idea and a decent thing to do.

Needmoresleep · 28/09/2022 12:43

I agree but Wagamama don't make it easy. The CEO email above is probably the way to go.

More generally firms seem to have outsourced customer feedback to market research firms, as if to prevent direct communication with customers. Yesterday's train journey was two hours without wifi, a regular occurrence, but the only place to complain, as far as the app went, as some 20 page survey which wanted to know my views on the chocolate vending machine at the station and my gender identity. I then could not show my ticket as the app suddenly asked me to log in again, so a telling off from the guard because apparently their wifi is always crap, so passengers, without being told, should not rely on the app, which they encourage you to use, but instead download it to a Googlewallet, whatever that is.

The two hours were spent trying to complain to Wagamama and SWR on a phone with poor signal. I doubt they will listen. Wagamama will listen to their non binary diversity and inclusion office instead as they clearly felt this was a necessary hire, and they will feel it is important to show they can effect "change" within the business - even at the expense of pissing off customers.

I so want to tell so many firms why I don't use them any more. Mostly around their virtue signalling, but also, say, Tesco, who expect me to pay more for my meal deal because I don't want them to be able to collect data about me. The silver lining is that I am saving money. No more Wagamama treats when I am out and about. The sandwich from a local sandwich shop will be cheaper. In time Mermaids star will have faded, but I will not easily forgive those that were complicit.

An acquaintance of mine knows the CEO and this doesn't surprise me, he's fully on-board with gender ideology and the manchester restaurant has a massive rainbow flag with the trans triangles.

Kentgirl2525 · 28/09/2022 14:12

Good idea we do need to do this. I was unaware of this as been avoiding the news for a while now due to it making me thoroughly depressed! But I too will not use Wagamamas anymore after hearing this. My money my choice where to spend it. Why is trans rights absolutely everywhere now? Why is nothing else supported? Why does it seem like the only important issue that even businesses seem to be involved in? I’m genuinely confused as to how all this has become so rammed down our throats suddenly. They seem to be the only people who matter nowadays but surely they are such a minority?!?

Thelnebriati · 28/09/2022 14:15

DS and his mates stopped using them because of this. I'd really like to be able to just buy food without any politics attached to it.

Exactly, I was going to say the same thing. Slightly hypocritical of me because some of the places I'm currently boycotting have been on my to-do list to write to for a VERY long time 😳but realistically, unless we write/email/tweet and TELL them all that we are boycotting them and why (and if possible, how MUCH custom/money they are losing from us), they might not even notice we've stopped using them at all (unless there was a VERY big drop in overall sales), or if they do, they may have absolutely no idea WHY their sales have dropped, and mistakenly attribute it to all sorts of wrong reasons. So every time, we should be getting a clear message out there that we're unhappy with them, and why! (Promise I will try to do some of mine later!).

KittenKong · 28/09/2022 18:00

Yup the forget that the people walking are those older (mostly) women taking their kids and their kids pals…
