Just been to take my young child to a West end show.
The main character was played by a boy (trans girl). In the book and film its a girl.

The villan was played by a man (male) dressed up as a woman. In the book and the film its a woman.

Should I explain to my GIRL FEMALE child that women are a joke, a myth, drag, a feeling and they can forget getting jobs in theatre. I am fucking SICK of it. Its everywhere now.

‘Y’all’?

I thought cultural appropriation was one of all ‘y’all’s’ big no-nos? 🙄

LettuceJones · 25/09/2022 17:59

Are you saying it was Matilda?

Or something called Matt-Tilda?

Little boys and girls aren't very different in terms of build, as I'm sure you know. A biologically male trans child can pass relatively easy as a girl. That isn't the case with biologically male adults.

Don't know why I'm bothering to explain this, but I thought I'd humour the poster by pretending he/she/they is posting in good faith.

SapphosRock · 25/09/2022 18:19

Matt-Tilda sounds like one of those dodgy adult pantomimes but I assume OP didn't take her DD to that.

LettuceJones · 25/09/2022 18:27

Well I was assuming that too but it's a weird auto correct and you would think it would be common knowledge if the lead role in Matilda was being played by a boy.

Discovereads · 25/09/2022 18:32

If it were true, I wouldn’t care. I quite enjoyed an all female Romeo and Juliet where yes, even Romeo was played by a woman.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 25/09/2022 19:49

Well since the OP hasn’t returned we shall never know why she thought this!

MargaritaPie · 25/09/2022 23:08

I'm not sure how you know the Matilda actress (or one of them at least since there are 4) is trans, I couldn't find anything on Google.

However if the actress really is trans do you think, given they are a child, it's a good idea to make a fuss about it publicly in a negative light when we have websites like kiwifarms who doxx transpeople and their parents?

You could potentially be putting this child at risk of harm.

LaughingPriest · 26/09/2022 15:38

I actually agree with Marg <spots flying pig> (partially - KF don't just 'doxx transpeople' you know) - bit off to say someone is trans if you don't know?

WanOvaryKenobi · 27/09/2022 12:07

Oh do bugger off, seppo.

Just to revive this thread, my two DSs went to see this last night with a family member and this morning when we were listening to the original cast soundtrack I said "was it as good as this last night" and DS2 said yes, although it sounded different because Matilda was played by a boy. I asked if DS1 thought so too and if so, how they both knew and they shrugged and said "she just was a boy - you could hear in the singing" and then concluded that maybe they "couldn't find a girl who was good enough" 🤦🏼‍♀️

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 01/10/2022 15:55

I suspect we conclude this was a child with an unusually deep voice, and we don’t know their sex. As the age of an actor playing Matilda is surely before a boy’s voice would have broken?

OP, was this the production of Matilda in the WE? Are you sure that Matilda was played by a transgirl? That information isn't in the cast biographies on the show's website (and the programmes only contain the same info as the website biogs), and there hasn't been anything in the show's promotional material about it. I have some connections with the professional children's musical theatre world and know one of the current WE Matildas personally, and haven't heard anything about a trans-identified child cast as Matilda.

Miss Trunchbull has always been played by a male actor in the musical theatre show, and imo that casting works better than having a female play the role. I don't think the casting of Emma Thompson works that well in what I've seen of the film, brilliant actress though she is.

In the current tour of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 2 of the 4 children sharing the role of Charlie are girls. Not sure whether that was deliberate "sex-blind" casting (colour-blind casting is pretty well established in theatre), or whether they just couldn't find enough boys who could fulfil the role.

I love the film Miss Trunchball - Matilda was my favourite childhood book. I agree men often play the character and it's worked fine in theatre versions I've seen. Matilda as a transgirl no! No need at all
