My Shadow is Pink

Spotted this on tiktok earlier (lower link), and whilst this is same old shit from the usual sources, it’s the first time I’ve seen it, and I’m shocked that so many think that it’s amazing for children.

Responses and reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and I can’t help but feel sorry for all children who are read this tripe, because it reinforces to them that if they have a male body they should like boy things or their shadow doesn’t match up. What’s happened to teaching children that they can do whatever the hell they like, no matter what sex they are?

I genuinely cannot believe a publisher produced such a load of sexist shite. So a pink shadow means you line dancing and sparkles, a blue shadow is big and strong. Really? The strongest people I know are all women

They’ve been promoting this book for some time. I’ve seen it endorsed by some Early Years leaders.

The portrayal of “Dad” is quite frightening and alien to most young children and the toy stereotyping is regressive. Not a book I’d use.

I’d not have been able to get past being expected to accept colourful shadows when I was of the age this is meant for. I was very willing to engage with all kinds of fantastic imaginary concepts - but they needed to make sense of some kind, even if that sense had to include world-building &/or magic. But even now it’s making me a bit twitchy. I realise this is a complete side-issue, but…

I was almost going to give this the benefit of the doubt as some sort of blunt take on gender nonconformity. But when it gets to the end and shows examples of relatives who all have "shadows" that somehow don't fit with sex stereotypes (she secretly likes science, he secretly likes dancing), they all nevertheless have shadows that are blue if they're male, and pink if they're girls. Except for the main character. So what does the blue and pink actually mean? Why not just shadows of whatever different colours if your "shadow" is about your personality and likes and dislikes?

I watched the TikTok and hate it.

In reality, our “shadows” are all varying shades of purple.

Not clicked the links but all this talk of shadows makes me think just how fucked Peter Pan was. Not only did he lose it but its black. The horror 😱
