Southampton Pride: Children's play centre hosts 'rainbow morning'

A children's play centre is staging a pride party as part of a city's wider LGBT celebrations.

Sea Life Play Centre is throwing the party in partnership with organisers of Southampton's main Pride event.

Children up to 12 years old were invited to the "rainbow morning", which was set to finish in time for people to join the city centre parade.

Organisers of Pride said they wanted children to be able to engage with the LGBT community.

The party will be held at the play centre in The Marlands centre and will feature entertainment including face painting, temporary pride tattoos, flag making and rainbow painting.

Jay Edwards-Bannon, from Southampton Pride, highlighted the importance of children being able to engage with the LGBT community.

He said: "Early engagement with LGBT+ education is vitally important for us to move to a more welcoming and accepting society.

"Children and young people are growing up in the most diverse and inclusive communities ever and it is important that an understanding of the differences they may encounter in the families of their friends and peers is taught at an early age.

"The event will coincide will really well with our own extended Kids Zone at Southampton Pride itself."

Event organiser Sarahjane Selley said it would be a "cute event" and a chance for children to be involved.

Miss Selley said the event had initially received some negative feedback, but added: "Once we officially announced the party we got fantastic comments through from parents.

"We've been holding a number of free events for ticket holders to help during the cost of living crisis, so that kids can enjoy their school holidays."

Miss Selley continued: "It's going to be a very colourful, cute, messy event and we're all really looking forward to it."

I'm interested that Mr Edwards Bannon feels it important that children under 12 " Engage " with the " + " community, especially as the " + " community is a very wide ubrella of orientations and interests. I wonder exactly how much chidlren under 12 need to be engaging with adults of varied interests ?

Such a good point. Imagine Mr & Mrs Stevens from number 8 holding court to all the local children about their sexual preferences and life? Or the local swingers club running activities for under 12s? Or the nudists? The police would swiftly get involved.

We are drowning children in adult concepts that they are emotionally unable to navigate. LGBT people are parents, bus drivers, doctors, gardeners etc and part of all our communities. None of us need to "meet" children as representatives of our sexuality and frankly those adults that want to are waving bloody great red flags over their heads.

I am starting to be angry with the so called ‘community’ LGBTQ+. Something is wrong with all this pushing of adult sexuality in the direction of children. It is obsessive and insidious.

The Pride schedule for the event local to me, which is early September, just came out, and it is full of this stuff too.

I know what most people are thinking, it's a festival, and so there will be kids stuff.

But it's kind of weird - like, why would you take kids to what is now essentially a festival celebrating sex? It hasn't any real political significance.

Personally I think, why spend so much public time and money on a sex festival at all? Because it's probably the biggest festival a lot of towns do other than Christmas. Here it is almost always larger than the local summer public holiday, and sometimes bigger than that national holiday in some communities.

Does it not occur to you, at any level, at all, ever, that there are heterosexual people out in the wild, who think the same about themselves?!
Maybe they're wracked with pain through illness or disability, maybe they think their looks aren't good enough, for a multitude of possible reasons - too fat/thin/tall/small/can't get a good enough job to feed their families or take them on holiday/? Or maybe mentally abused by a spouse to the point that they think they're worthless?
Why do people like you, think that these things only apply to the lgbt++ community?
Why is it that the t++ community in particular, seems to be a very selfish community that lacks awareness of anything but themselves and their own wants?!

I had an awful, fleeting thought about The Krankies, when i read that. Just change the name to Mr and Mrs Tough, lol :-/
