Breaking news, sex isn't binary in humans because...avocados

Popular Science has tweeted an old article of theirs
www.popsci.com/species-swap-sex-clownfish-avocado/

"What avocados and clownfish have in common, sexually speaking"

A mildly interesting collection of facts about unusual reproductive strategies of certain plants and animals, used to push the idea that sex isn't binary in humans.

So sad to see respectable scientific communicators stoop to the level of woowoo.

The Twitter ratio is whopping now: twitter.com/PopSci/status/1562759034347741184

The theory that somewhere there is a copy and paste list of comebacks for TRAs is sounding very plausible to me now. Because they obviously don't understand the implications of most of the standard retorts.

IloveHolby · 25/08/2022 22:45

we were paddling in a muddy stream this week, my 10yo kept screaming and saying there were snarks in there. Turns out it was just sticks 🤷‍♀️. I’ll reassure her that the snarks are safely tucked up here 😀

IloveHolby · 25/08/2022 22:45

I had avocado for lunch - does that make me a cannibal?

SudocremOnEverything · 25/08/2022 22:50

Bamboo is a rhizome. Cutting down the stalks, it’ll just grow in a different direction/place instead.

I don’t think that means I can cut off limbs or my head and still survive.

Because I’m not actually a rhizome. I’m not even a plant. I’m not sure I ever anticipate the need to clarify this.

SudocremOnEverything · 25/08/2022 22:52

I mean why stop at comparing humans to plants. Why are non-living things any less relevant comparators.

Rainfall on limestone karst will, over time, deep into the crevices and develop extensive cave systems. Does that mean I need to be careful how long I spend in the shower?

IloveHolby · 25/08/2022 22:55

Great song @ScreamingMeMe I’ll be sharing that

Thelnebriati · 25/08/2022 23:00

Has anyone posted about pipa pipa toads yet? The male pushes the fertilised eggs into the spongy skin in the females back and they hatch there.
Not as glamourous as seahorses but still, it makes you think.

@ArabellaScott MY EYES

Thought I was a sporner but turns out I have limits.

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2022 23:12

Yes, Inebriati. See Permanent's post above. Grin

OMG!

That's what those 'we are pregnant' blokes get reincarnated as, obviously.

Thelnebriati · 25/08/2022 23:15

I'd be rubbish at that. I swallowed just watching it.

WomaninBoots · 25/08/2022 23:19

Oooo, I have an actual MSc in Plants. Do I have the authority to say humans aren't avocados? This could be exiting. It might make the tuition fees all worthwhile in the end.

I'm afraid I flunked on the PhD though. Couldn't hack the monocotony.

That's ok, it's the males that do it.

Oh I do hope so. Those blokes are annoying.

Is 'hacking the monocotony' roughly mowing the lawn?Confused

IcakethereforeIam · 25/08/2022 23:24

Might shut them up for a little while. Gob full of your children might do that, unless...avocados...cannibalism..!

This is where I get most of my sea creature knowledge from. Jawfish creature report

LunaLights · 26/08/2022 00:17

Who is going to tell vegans about avocados and human being the same?
😮🥑🤦🏼‍♀️

PetalsOnTheBreeze · 26/08/2022 00:22

What about figs, then? Vicious carnivorous bastards.

Blister · 26/08/2022 00:28

I honestly hope people who produce sperm can actually produce ova some day just like the avocados and clown fish who actually change sex.
I'll make sure to reincarnate so that I can put my feet up a bit and hold the hand of whoever is carrying my baby.

startfresh · 26/08/2022 05:09

If humans could also change sex without medical procedures, at all, then I would believe it.

Another note, birds can fly, let's all just off the roof.

Defence for court: some spiders and scorpions kill and eat their mates. So I had to.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/08/2022 05:20

Don't worry, Rufus, like many on MN ( there's a clue in the name), you've done the practicals on mammalian reproduction, and we're not required to write a thesis.

Proper LOL.

I have a lowly science degree, can I come out and play with the bigger feminists?

Sex isn't binary in humans anyway bc intersex people exist

You never seem to come back and address this on other threads you leave this little slice of wisdom on.

You have had it pointed out that despite someone obviously telling you that ‘science’ evolves, that actually you are using people’s medical conditions for a political agenda. And the reality is, these differences of sexual development have existed for ever and still have never changed the fact that reproduction in humans is reliably binary. The existence of those with these medical conditions doesn’t change that.

Please don’t bother plopping down your posts if you cannot actually support your claim. And you have not yet supported it so it seems like you are regurgitating something you read somewhere else that sounded plausible to you for whatever reason, but is based on some deep ideological thinking. It certainly doesn’t help those whose bodies you are politicising to prop up unproven theories that will never prove that sexual reproduction in humans is binary. Two sexes. With a great deal of variation with each sex class.
