Absolute shocker of an “article” in the Metro about transphobic hate crimes.

Metro claim to adhere to the IPSO Editors’ Code of Practise. They identify as doing so, at least, which might explain how that piece came to be published; because it breaches the accuracy clause multiple times.

The Press, while free to editorialise and campaign, must distinguish clearly between comment, conjecture and fact.

Metro seem to have ignored the second half of that sentence. The entire premise of the article is false: the author was - allegedly - loudly & publicly misgendered 13 years ago, an experience that was doubtless unpleasant, but in no way makes them the victim of a hate crime. The author claims the murder of a trans woman as a transphobic hate crime (& has done so in other articles) despite Metro’s editors surely being aware that is untrue (NB that’s only one of the articles from the Metro that characterise what happened accurately).

Should anyone wish to complain about the apparent utter disregard for accuracy & honesty, IPSO have an online form for doing so…

The article is in the "Opinion" sub category.
It's a pretty standard PR category of the Metro and in fact any publication.

It's a terrible story but it's from 2018.

NitroNine · 25/08/2022 09:09

I’m not sure which story you were looking at @IcakethereforeIam but the one I meant is still showing as having been published on 24/08/22 when I use first link in my OP. It’s a 2018 murder that’s being referred to/grossly mischaracterised though, yes.

Apologies @NitroNine I just looked at the, I think, last link. I should have checked your name, I know you don't usually post rubbish.

I've just been down a bit of a Guardian rabbit hole, they put up an article from a very privileged gay man(Eton dontcha know, though that's not mentioned in the piece), who was so jealous of his fish tank(?) that he neglected it so badly the fish were killed and the coral floated...never mind off to drag up. He's nb and his wiki is so 'they/them' it's incomprehensible, much like the subject's behaviour to his pet animals.

Anyway, sorry, I'll have a proper look.

Okay, looks like any old random can submit and article but it's up to the Metro to vet them before publication. The author got shouted at by a woman whilst with a supportive group of friends about 13 years ago, and suffered online abuse which the police did nothing about. Well, as it says in the comments (most of which are probably hate crimes) you want to be a women....

I didn’t know he went to Eton! I love how this movement despises Old Etonians like Boris etc but say you’re non-binary and behave in very similar ways, ie narcissist gobshite, and you’re celebrated. Plus ça change.
