I am job hunting. This application is for a charity working with disadvantaged people. Yay! This is a good thing! Right up my street.

It has the longest diversity and equality form I have ever seen. Including this question:

Please define your gender identity:
Gender-fluid
Man
Non-binary
Other
Prefer not to say
Woman

What is there no question on?

Sex.

Sorry to tell you that this is one of the saner lists you will come across in your job search. And it’s across the board, not just the charity sector.

I do wonder whether the platforms and companies that create these forms will do the usual analysis on drop-out rates throughout the form. Last time I was job-hunting I came across a lot like this (it was often quite techy, trendy, companies that did it), and I couldn't press the Back button quick enough. Surely for every candidate this pleases, there must be at least as many candidates thinking "what the hell?".

Are the questions for equality monitoring? If they're not then they need to provide a good reason for asking for gender identity information. If it is equality monitoring then it's a useless question because gender identity is not a protected characteristic.

Not to mention that man and woman are not gender identities.

Equality monitoring.

Other questions included:

  1. What was the main source of household income when you were about 14

  2. How many of your grandparents went to university

Plus a race one that had two dozen or more different options, including some really obsure ones, but didn't have white british.

Mad, innit?

Why don't they ask 'Do you consider yourself to be a', then at least those of us who grind our teeth at gender identity can answer?

But yes they should ask your sex.

I get a bit cross about these lists because women come last - I know this this one was alphabetical but it doesn’t make sense. Women make up over half the population.

For the purposes of data analysis, it’s weird and clunky to have the most populous group last.

I'm not job-hunting, but for anything recently where they've asked for 'gender' I've ignored it and written in 'my sex is female'.
If I came across an online form with a drop-down menu and no space to write in 'other', I'm not sure what I'd do. Probably contact them, either by email or, if feeling bolshy which I usually am over this on SM.

Internalised discrimination.

I've had this issue with a charity who sent out a survey and omitted the sex question. I questioned it and have not had a satisfactory reply back.

Unfortunately for the, one person answered quoting the Equality Act so i'm pushing them to answer specific questions about that.
