Just seen this posted on Facebook, no reasons were given. All the comments I had seen on previous publicity were positive.

Drag Queen Story Hour - postponed

Is this supposed to be a 'fashionable' thing? How many men in dresses do small children meet in real life? In fact how men in dresses do any of us meet? When I was about 14 there was a married man in my aunt's road who wore dresses. No-one made a fuss about it; it was just accepted. But I have lived a good many years in different parts of the country and have never come across a man in dresses outside of TV.

Excellent news , hope it & all the other “ performances “ are cancelled.

Protect them from sexualised entertainment, I'd think. Seems reasonable to me.

Homophobia and intolerance packaged up as "concern"

Is a pantomime sexualised?
Is the nation's FAVOURITE programme, Mrs Brown's Boys sexualised?

augustusglupe · 09/08/2022 22:14

Postponed forever hopefully

Maybe women are just sick and tired of men telling us that it is funny/acceptable for men to dress up as us and lampoon us? Ever thought of that?

picklemewalnuts · 10/08/2022 08:02

I'm neither homophobic nor intolerant, Diggity. One opinion different from yours doesn't make me homophobic and intolerant. You need to do better than throw accusations about.

Drag is sexualised entertainment. If Beyoncé turned up to do a reading in gold hot pants and spike heels, I wouldn't be thrilled either. Inclusive story time should be hosted by people with disabilities, same sex couples, people in jobs that are usually done by the opposite sex.

Panto is as far from sexualised as possible.
Sexist, oh yes!
It's clearly a joke about older women losing sexual attractiveness, becoming male, hairy, clumsy and deep voiced. The very opposite of sexualised. Post menopause women may as well be men, they are so past it.

TheKeatingFive · 10/08/2022 08:10

Pantomime is not the same as drag.

WhiteFire · 10/08/2022 08:13

Mrs Brown's Boys is on after the watershed and any DVDS are a 15, so not really something to use in an argument for Drag Story Hour.

Justrealised · 10/08/2022 08:16

I'm local to Rochdale (neighbouring town) and have been following. I've seen quite a few posts on groups which aren't Council lead. I believe some people were stopped from posting as well on some of the official posts or had their comments deleted.

I wonder if Bolton will go ahead.

I agree it's inappropriate for children but was a bit concerned about the likes and positive comments I had seen up to now . So I'm happy with this latest update .

Sorry my post above was in reply to this

How? Most gay men don't present themselves as a highly sexualised caricature of a woman.

I'm quite sure the majority of gay men think children shouldn't be exposed to adult entertainment.

Your post seems far more homophobic by what it infers about gays men.

I'm quite happy to be branded intolerant for objecting to children being being exposed to age inappropriate entertainment. It means I value safeguarding and recognise grooming when I see it.

Good. Now how about a Lesbian Grandmother story time?

Sign me up!

Pantomimes, anyone?

Panto dames are not the same. Panto is children's entertainment, it doesn't take place in nightclubs and the content is not highly sexualised - hence why drag queen's are classed as adult entertainment.

If some people can't see the difference between Justin Fletcher as Aunt Polly and Flo Job then perhaps they also can't see the difference between a dancer and an erotic dancer (stripper).

I'd also suggest that the very proximity of pantomime (children's entertainment - men dressed up as un-sexy, mocking parodies of post-menopausal women) and drag (adult entertainment - men dressed up as hyper-sexualised parodies of rapacious pornified women) which is always used as a 'nothing to see here' argument about why Drag Storytime is so harmless, is PRECISELY WHY it's such a safeguarding nightmare.

It blurs lines. Children can't articulate the difference between Widow Twanky and Flo Job, which is how it erodes their boundaries. It pushes the envelope of what is acceptable and safe and comfortable for them. I can't think of a single reason why that would be a good idea, or could have a positive justification.

Drag Queens have been popping up in children's pantomimes the last few years

HooverIsAlwaysBroken · 10/08/2022 10:36

For my understanding… Is Aida the drag queen who has a very visible bulge so that you clearly can see the genitalia? Or am I getting my drag queens confused?

Panto dames are also on a stage so children can clearly understand that they are performing. Similarly, there's often a young woman playing a boy in panto - children know this is a fiction because they're on a stage. They know they are performers and are not left with any ambiguity as to the performer's sex.

Are you fucking kidding me? £150.00 per hour! Three times a day...they must be queing up to do this.
My library is now stafed by volunteers trying to keep it open.

Plus all the extra costs that are racking up in council time to respond (or not) to concerned residents, extra security, police time etc. that is all out of our council tax

Self published, by the look of it.

Justme56 · 10/08/2022 11:27

To be honest I think the whole thing was set up as some money making grift wrapped up in a diversity banner. Probably quite a saturated marked of drag acts all trying to compete with each other. I think most things boil down to £/$ at the end of the day.

WinterTrees · 10/08/2022 13:04

hotdiggetydog · 10/08/2022 10:21

Aida H Dee has a title published by Drag Queen Story Hour UK Publishing, dated December 2020, currently unavailable on Amazon and with no customer reviews. I think calling them a 'published children's author' might be quite a stretch, especially given the quality of writing in the 3 line synopsis.

However, they could be at the top of the Sunday Times bestseller list and it still wouldn't make their overtly sexualised - and sexist - presentation any less inappropriate for children's library events.

Pantomime and Mrs Brown's Boys don't involve Drag Queens, which is a very specific entertainment form.
