Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Realistically, do you think this is as much progress as we’re going to make?

In terms of women’s rights. I know it seems bleak when we are making progress in the sex v gender stuff, but really we’re just trying to protect what we already have. Having seen the lengths men (and some women) are prepared to go to to rid us of our rights it just feels like even if we defend everything, so much energy is going to be spent on defence and fighting off other attacks that we won’t have time for anything else. And now men have seen how little it took to get what they want, why are they going to stop there? They’ll either continue or find another loophole. Sorry this is so despondent. I’d be interested in others thoughts! Am I being too negative?

I also think that the US will slowly organise better at grass roots level on this.

When they do, and it will take time, that will help weaken the global trade.

But it will take time.

@SerotinaPickeler I really sympathise with your relationship with your daughter. Perhaps she is a good example of intelligent young women who haven't had to fight any battles based on very obvious sexism.

But, it'll happen eventually, I think almost all women come to a realisation at least on some level of mysogyny in society and their own experience at the short end of it. I think it's often a maturity thing, you only realise the older you get.

That's what I think of when I think of this captured generation of young women, hopefully they'll get it eventually.

The idea that being GC is "protecting what [rights] you already have" is a misnomer. Equality rights have been the same for over a decade, and before being codified in EA 2010 were substantively similar under prior law. E.g. it has been legal for people to use the bathroom of their choice for decades. I'm not sure it's ever been illegal. So GCs are not defending the status quo, they are actively campaigning to remove long standing legal rights of a minority group. And yes you're right there are much bigger risks to all women to worry about e.g. current threat to bodily autonomy

The EA2010 includes single-sex exceptions which make it legal for service providers to make facilities single sex. Men cannot just use women's facilities just because it's their 'choice' if the service provider has chosen to use the single-sex exceptions.

I think we'd have noticed if all facilities like toilets and changing rooms had been mixed sex for decades, as you seem to imply.

So GCs are not defending the status quo, they are actively campaigning to remove long standing legal rights of a minority group.

Men are not a 'minority group'.

Oh dear… the old ‘using the spaces for decades’ trope…

Ahhh. Maybe some, but they were noticed. The massive uptick in the past decade and the aggressive nature of extremist activists has meant that yes, females feel they need their single sex spaces

But it is dishonest to say that there were so many transitioned males using female single sex spaces for decades. It is just as dishonest to say that females never noticed when they did. It is the myth of passing.
