Data brokers amass profiles of pregnant women – and, of course, it's all up for sale

Exciting opportunities for American people who are or may become pregnant.

Nearly three billion profiles and other pieces of data belonging to "actively pregnant" women or those "shopping for maternity products" worldwide are up for sale by US data brokers.

In light of the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, in states where abortion is now illegal this data could put women at risk of prosecution — either from law enforcement or private-citizen vigilantes looking to collect bounties on women seeking to terminate their pregnancies.

Genuine question, I'm assuming this would be illegal under our law as part of the GDPR built into the DPA, and illegal in the EU. Is this correct?

It's really quite horrifying that even vigilante bounty hunters can get hold of personal health information about women.

I don't know. Just posting for discussion.

Personally I wouldn't put my faith in any UK laws - first off we know how easy they are to change. That's if there's any point since I'm not really conscious of any desire, funding or mechanism to enforce whatever laws we do have.

On the plus side, this data is generally pretty time limited. And by and large there are too many non-technical ways to deduce a person has been pregnant if you think about it.
